WWI – Bruce Bairnsfather (attrib) original cartoon entitled ‘Poor old Fritz’ showing a dishevelled and wounded German soldier smoking and looking wistfully at a German army cap in his hand. Presumably that of one of his dead colleagues according to the title which this cartoon was subsequently given (see below) See above for discussion on this cartoon as to its attribution. This cartoon was published with the title ‘Alas ! Poor Herr von Yorick – Fricourt July 1916.’ The attribution and title places this sketch firmly within the first few days of the Battle of the Somme – and suggests the popular belief that the ‘Great Push’ of the allied forces against the German positions would be an overwhelming success. Events were to prove a different outcome. Drawn on a single leaf of sketch paper somewhat browned and creased approx 11x 7ins.

* After Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA, British 1723-1792, 18th/19th century- "The Holy Family with the Infant St John", 1788-9; oil on canvas, 75.5x63cm Notes: In David Manning`s article in the Burlington magazine 1991 on Reynold`s oil sketches he notes that little is known about the working practises of the artist. Occasionally Reynold`s did make preliminary sketches in oil, one such is in the Tate collection; the sketch for `The 4th Duke of Marlborough and his Family` circa 1777. He rarely made preliminary sketches and they were always executed in oils `in a slight manner to determine the general effect`. In Giuseppe Marchi`s (Reynold`s studio assistant) sale at Squibbs on 30th June 1808 over seventy of Reynolds sketches were itemised and sold in lots of four or five.
