Rufford Ormonde won his first C.C at The Kennel Club Show of 1892 when he also won what is now the British Collie Club Challenge Trophy for the first time. He won this trophy twice more in 1894, after his name change. This makes him the only dog to have won this trophy in different names, Ormskirk Ormonde and Rufford Ormonde. Ch. Rufford Ormonde was sold to Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan, of New York, at which time Morgan was paying record prices for champion dogs from England. Famously two of the American banker's prize collies, Sefton Hero and Ch. Rufford Ormonde, saved a young woman from drowning in July 1897. Robert K. Armstrong, the Superintendent of Mr. Morgan's kennels, with his wife, baby, and friend were upset in their boat on the Hudson and thrown into the river. The friend could not swim, and the noble dogs plunged to her rescue. Ch. Rufford Ormonde took hold of one arm with his teeth, and Sefton Hero placed himself so that the woman rested squarely on his back. Working together they dragged her safely to shore.Herbert St John Jones painted famous horses and dogs for many aristocratic clients, including King Edward VII and the Duke and Duchess of Westminster. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

* Gillray (James). Elegance Democratique - a Sketch near High Wycombe - whenever I wish to form a proper estimate of Mans Mind, I observe his Manners & his Dress, Lord Chesterfield, H. Humphrey, July 8th 1799, etching on wove with contemporary hand-colouring, thread margins, old tape hinge on the verso to the upper margin, 370 x 260 mm, together with Pylades & Orestes, H. Humphrey, April 1st 1797, etching on wove with bright contemporary hand-colouring, large margins, watercolour 'stain' affecting the image, 360 x 260 mmQTY: (2)NOTE:BM Satires 9438 & 9065. The first caricature is a comment on the slovenly appearance of John Henry Petty, the eldest son of Lord Lansdowne. Everything about his pose, bearing and dress is tasteless and inelegant. His clothes are ill-fitting and Gillray shows him as paunchy and round-shouldered with slack stockings. To top off this critique, Gillray includes a quotation by Philip Stanhope, Lord Chesterfield; one of the most famous arbiters of taste and dress. The second image shows William V, the Prince of Orange, as Orestes and his private Secretary, Count Nassalin, as the devoted Pylades. The British Museum describes the Prince's secretary as "hunchback." Gillray seems to have added the hump in a hurried afterthought. The secretary's hair, tied back with a black ribbon, falls behind him upon what would be a normal-looking back. The hump is then added unconvincingly behind the queue and somehow outside Nassalin's jacket—a rare example of carelessness by Gillray.

Lot 3301

A 1917 Nurse wartime sketch album used by a WW1 nurse to aid traumatised soldiers, lost to the world for more than 100 years, page after page is taken up by sketches and words put there by heroes from the trenches, one cartoon, drawn by soldier Pte Coles, shows a wounded man, bandaged from head to foot and on crutches, talking to a nurse. He says, ‘I’m feeling a lot better today’. She replies, ‘And you’re looking much better too’. The album, a forgotten piece of military history, belonged to Jean Thomson, a nurse at Merryflats War Hospital in Govan, Glasgow, during 1917/18, formerly a poorhouse, it was requisitioned in 1914 as a military hospital. Jean encouraged patients to draw and write in the album to aid rehabilitation. According to family she worked with soldiers who’d suffered shell shock sparked by battle stress. Symptoms included tremors, loss of sight or hearing and extreme fatigue. Jean’s album shows she was no stranger to ‘trench foot’ either. This horrible condition, first reported during combat in Russia in 1812, occurred when soldiers wore tight boots for prolonged periods in damp conditions. Fungal infections led to tingling, itching, swelling and, at worst, decay. However, the bulldog spirit shines bright again in a cartoon entitled ‘Trench Feet’. It depicts a dog sporting an enormously swollen and bandaged paw alongside the words, ‘It’s better to be a good old has been than a never was’. Humility comes to the fore with every turn of the page. In 1917 Pte Smith wrote a prayer, ‘Grace After Meals - Thank the Lord for what we have had. But if there had been more we should have been glad. But as the times have been so bad we will make a shift for what we have had - Amen. Further details: Fantastic provenance, and only age related wear to the album and pages, minor loss and wear etc. A true piece of History!

FIRST EDITION.BLIGH, William (1754-1817).  A Voyage to the South Sea, Undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for the Purpose of Conveying the Bread-Fruit Tree to the West Indies, in his Majesty's Ship The Bounty, commanded by Lieutenant William Bligh. Including an Account of the Mutiny on Board the said Ship, and the Subsequent Voyage of part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, from Tofoa, one of the Friendly Islands, to Timor, a Dutch Settlement in the East Indies. London: Printed for George Nicol, 1792. 4to (317 x 250mm). 7 engraved plates and charts, 5 of which folding, with the printed account of the mutiny commencing at p.154 (lacking the engraved frontispiece portrait of Bligh, but supplied in later facsimile, some heavier staining at upper margins of the first few text leaves and occasionally others, not affecting letters, some mainly marginal spotting and staining, a few darker spots). Contemporary or probably original publisher's paper-backed blue paper boards, uncut and partly unopened (parts torn away from the spine resulting in the loss of most of the old manuscript title, corners rubbed and bumped, some light staining). The plates and charts are titled as follows, with the wording often at variance with the wording on the list, and bound in the following order and not in the same order as the list: 1) "Sections of the Bread Fruit"; 2) "Sketch from recollections and anchor-bearings of the North Part of Otaheite from Point Venus to Taowne Harbour ... by William Bligh", with his facsimile signature (folding); 3) A Copy of the Draught from which the Bounty's Launch was built" (folding); 4) "Chart of Bligh's Islands", incorporating smaller inset "Chart of the Northern Part of the New-Hebrides ..." Holbrook Gaskell (1813-1909) was a British industrialist and an art and plant collector. He was the cousin of the Unitarian minister William Gaskell, husband of the eminent novelist Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-65), commonly referred to as "Mrs Gaskell". FIRST EDITION of this account of the first Bounty expedition and of the mutiny in its entirety; "... one of the most heroic sea voyages ever made ..." including "...  a slightly revised version of the text of Bligh's narrative of the mutiny, previously published at London in 1790 ..." (Hill). The author's own printed "Advertisement" at the beginning of the book describes how the work took on its present form in order to incorporate the account of the now infamous mutiny: "At the time I published the Narrative of the Mutiny on Board the Bounty, it was my intention that the preceding part of the Voyage should be contained in a separate account. This method I have since been induced to alter ...". Various sizes, from c.115 x 85mm to 178 x 230mm, six in pencil, one in watercolour, 11 in pen and ink, including a series of six studies of judges, barristers and court scenes, a watercolour inscribed on the verso in a later hand "Children looking into a Cake Shop Window for 'Denis Duval' by W. [With:] George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Five etchings, on India paper and mounted on card, illustrating the story "Hop o’ my Thumb & the Seven League Boots", the first illustration with autograph inscription on mount "W. M. Thackeray Esq., with the regards of George Cruikshank, 1853". Relics from the stillborn artistic career of William Makepeace Thackeray, preserved at least in part by the publisher George Smith; with etchings presented to Thackeray by Cruikshank. On his return to England from Germany in 1831, Thackeray took up the study of law at the Middle Temple. He applied himself rather half-heartedly for almost a year, spending more time developing his passions for the theatre and for reading fiction and history. Losing any real ambition for the law, and without entrée to the circles of society which his expected fortune and his public school education led him to expect, he spent the year of his maturity in a variety of "ungentlemanly" pursuits, working as a bill discounter, desultory journalist, and artist. In September 1834 he moved to Paris, for what was supposed to be a three-year apprenticeship in the ateliers of a French artist, applying himself happily and seriously to his studies only to discover, within a year, that his talent for comic drawings would never develop into satisfactory art. He did, however, continue to work closely with illustrators throughout his career, from George Cruikshank and John Leech (a friend from boarding school) to Richard Doyle and Frederick Walker. Provenance: George Smith (1824-1901, publisher) [part]; Christie’s, London, 29 May 1986, lot 244.

Michael Ayrton (British, 1921-1975)Minotaur signed and dated 'michael ayrton/29.11.1963' (lower right)pen and ink and ink on paper47.5 x 38cm (18 11/16 x 14 15/16in).together with a further pencil on paper, Moses, by the same hand(2)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, by whom gifted to the present ownerPrivate Collection, U.K.Minotaur shows a drawing of a comparatively early stage in Ayrton's conception of the creature which would come to define, for many, his reputation as a sculptor. At this stage the head, while unmistakably bovine, still retains traces of humanity, so that we see the creation of the Minotaur as process: man-becoming-bull. Later Ayrton came to understand the tragedy of the Minotaur as starting from birth, in a series of etchings that take the story from the womb to the prison of the maze, but here we see the shift taking place in adulthood; a process of man-becoming-bull which is both angry and anguished.Moses depicts a sketch of the Moses carved by Giovanni Pisano for the Baptistry at Pisa in the 13th century. Pisano was a huge influence on Ayrton, who credited his own decision to move from painting into sculpture to the overwhelming effect of his first encounter with his work. In the late 1960s (when there was still no standard work on Pisano in English), he and Henry Moore conceived a monumental work which would illustrate and illuminate Pisano's work through photographs and text; during the course of its preparation they exhaustively studied, measured and took photographs from every angle, and the book was finally published in 1969. This sketch, therefore, is one small token of an admiration which spanned the whole of Ayrton's career as a sculptor. We are grateful to Dr Justine Hopkins for compiling this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
