LUCA GIORDANO (Naples, 1634 - 1705)."Solomon Anointed King of Israel", ca. 1660.Wash on paper. We are grateful for the invaluable help in cataloguing the lot to Doctor Nicola Spinosa.Measurements: 22 x 30 cm; 41 x 50,5 cm (frame).Luca Giordano painted this gouache in the period corresponding to his first artistic maturity. We are looking at a possible sketch of the work "Solomon anointed king of Israel", belonging to the series of oil paintings on biblical themes made for the now disappeared hermitage of San Juan del Buen Retiro. The original paintings, which are very similar to the scenes in El Escorial, are one of the most important cycles that Giordano produced in Spain. In this image we find the theme narrated in Samuel:16 (1-13): "When King Saul had sinned by disobeying God during the battle of Michmash, where he was supposed to destroy all the Amalekite enemies and did not do so. So God decided to withdraw his blessing and sent the prophet Samuel in search of a new "anointed one", a new king for Israel. His destination was Bethlehem, where Jesse lived, a shepherd with his sons. One of them was the chosen one and Samuel, as prophet, was to know which one. To avoid punishment from King Saul, the prophet excused himself on the grounds that he was travelling to make a sacrifice. Once at Jesse's house, the prophet met seven of his eight sons, but none were anointed. When he asked if any were missing, Jesse called the youngest, David, and when the prophet saw him, he knew it was him. There, in front of his father and older brothers, he anointed him as the future king of Israel. And David was a wise and good-looking man, ruddy and of a good countenance.Luca Giordano, the most outstanding Neapolitan painter of the late 17th century and one of the leading representatives of the late Italian Baroque, was a painter and engraver known in Spain as Lucas Jordán, who enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime, both in his native Italy and in Spain. However, after his death his work was often criticised for its speed of execution, which was at odds with the Greco-Latin aesthetic. It is thought that he trained in the circle of Ribera, whose style he initially followed. However, he soon travelled to Rome and Venice, where he studied Veronese, whose influence is evident in his work. This trip was key to the maturing of his style, as were the influences of other artists such as Mattia Preti, Rubens, Bernini and, above all, Pietro da Cortona. In the late 1670s Giordano began his large-scale mural decorations (Montecassino and San Gregorio Armeno in Naples), followed from 1682 onwards by other projects, including the mural paintings in the gallery and library of the Palazzo Medici Ricardi in Florence. In 1692 he was called to Madrid to paint murals in the monastery of El Escorial, where he worked from 1692 to 1694. He then executed the paintings of the office and bedroom of Charles II in the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, and after these he undertook the paintings of the Casón del Buen Retiro (ca. 1697), the sacristy of Toledo cathedral (1698), the royal chapel of the Alcázar and San Antonio de los Portugueses (1699). However, royal commissions ceased with the arrival of Philip V in 1701 and the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession, and Giordano returned to Naples in 1702, although from there he continued to send paintings to Spain. Giordano's works are now to be found in the most important art galleries throughout the world, including the Prado, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Louvre in Paris, the Kunsthistorisches in Vienna, the Metropolitan in New York and the National Gallery in London.

PONIATOWSKI STANISLAW: (1754-1833) Polish nobleman, politician and diplomat, a member of the wealthy Poniatowski family, cousin of Prinz Jozef Poniatowski (1763-1813, Polish General who became a Marshal of the French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars) and a nephew of Stanislaw II Augustus (1732-1798, King of Poland 1764-95). Stanislaw Poniatowski served as Grand Treasurer of Lithuania 1784-91, making him a key figure in Poland during the Age of Enlightenment. A.L., unsigned, three pages, 4to, Rome, 11th October 1774, to Revd. Barker. Poniatowski states that he had much pleasure in receiving his correspondent's letter from Florence, and also wishes to have good news from Paris or England, continuing to write of his own recent activities, in part, 'I have so much to write to you about that I do not know where to begin with, this is really the first moment of real sociable pleasure I felt since your departure……The next day after your departure I went to Tivoli, and never was more sorry not to have you with me; really the country out does all description, it is not a large spott (sic) but finer than any we ever saw for natural buty (sic)……the country about Albano is as you know one great rising thrown up by volcanos, there are in it two lakes which seem plainly to have formerly been craters; notwithstanding there is nothing here so striking as a Tivoly, yet the extent and the variety of views which there are follows the hills make it much more fit for a person who intends to spend some time out of Rome: besides that the people seem to be more honest at Albano than at Tivoli……There is a curiosity at Tivoly which one might thinck (sic) of so late date, some thousand years counted but for little, and at so different a kind, that natural history being but the least interesting part of it, it is but with some difficulty it might be classed under that head. I wish I may give you a clear idea of it, it is a wheele (sic) which clearly has formerly existed in the rock of which all the country is formed of. If you thrust the wheel here by ill drawn [at this point in the letter Poniatowski has added an ink sketch of a wheel with four spokes visible] as far as goes the whole lined part into very loose weed which hardens in time and rotts (sic) away the wood of the wheel you will have the best idea of the wholes (sic) left in the rock for there still exist the wholes (sic) which the spokes formerly occupied…..this mould of the wheel would not be as curious a thing, did not the elevation of the rock, a corse (sic) quite different which the waters have taken now make it so…..I wish you had staied (sic) to see it with your own eyes, the whole of this expedition would surely have given you vast satisfaction. I received a letter from Father in which……he repeats with much earnestness his wish to see me back next spring into Polland (sic), I am the less disposed for this that I do not see a sufficient reason for it…..never show my letters because thoug (sic) English I have the impudanse (sic) of sending them without reading them over'. In a postscript Poniatowski provides an intriguing anecdote regarding a murder, in part, 'St. Germain getting into his carriage in the night hits a man with his foot, it was one of the coachmen of the English who in a dispute had been assassinated and was dying, the other coachmen remained upon their seats…..nobody ever thought about giving assistance, because there is a law that the man found with the murdered is strait (sic) set into prison….the story is so inhumain (sic) that it becomes hardly credible'. With integral address leaf addressed to Barker in Bakewell, Derbyshire and bearing a good red wax seal with an imprint of the bust of a man in profile. Some age wear, light staining and a few minor holes, only very slightly affecting a few words of text, G

*Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959)Sketch for 'Day'signed 'Epstein' l.l., pencil, ink and wash57 x 42.5cmProvenance: The Redfern Gallery(?);Lady Epstein (Kathleen Esther Garman);with Obelisk Gallery, London, c.1965:Anon, Bonham's, London, 29 November 2005, lot 69.Sketch for 'Day' is a preparatory drawing of c.1929 for the monumental sculpture 'Day' commissioned along with its pair 'Night' for London Transport HQ (55 Broadway, a Grade 1 listed building close to St James's Park, London). The sculptures, completed in 1929, are amongst Epstein’s most celebrated and, at the time, controversial public works. On their unveiling, there was outcry over the explicit nudity of the boy, which led to the offer of resignation from the Managing Director of London Underground (UERL), which had commissioned the works. In the end, Epstein made a compromise - shortening the boy's penis - and the uproar was forgotten. The inscription verso, in (the elderly) Lady Epstein’s hand on an Obelisk Gallery label, states it was exhibited in 1927 at The Redfern Gallery - but this could be inaccurate as the commission for 'Day & Night' was received in 1928, and other 'Day' related studies are dated '28 or '29. See related Epstein studies in 'Jacob Epstein Sculpture and Drawings'. Leeds City Art Galleries, 1987, pp.224-5. Glyn Philpot RA (1884-1937)Study of the Artist's sister, Gertrude;Study of the Artist's sister, Daisytwo, pencil18.7 x 12.5cm each, framed as oneProvenance: Gabrielle Cross, the artist's niece;with the Fine Art Society, London.Preparatory sketches for the oil painting 'The Sisters of the Artist', 1922, Bonhams, '20th Century British Art', 26 June 2007, lot 16.Glyn Philpot was a British painter and sculptor, best known for his portraits of contemporary figures such as Siegfried Sassoon. This drawing is a preparatory study for one of the few portraits Philpot painted of his family members; the final painting was exhibited at the Academy of 1922 to wide acclaim. It is an intimate sketch of his two older and much-loved sisters, Gertrude and Daisy. Daisy often posed for her brother, but this is the first portrait featuring Gertrude. Philpot’s light pencil line, executed in swift movements, captures his sisters with great sensitivity. It creates a feeling of familial intimacy aided by their unforced expressions and composure, neither looking deliberately towards the painter nor away from him.
