Thijs Mauve (1915-1996) Oil on Board, 'Cottage in Woodland', signed and dated Sept., '95. Biography Thijs Mauve [1915-1996] Dutch School. Painter, wood engraver; graphic designer and book illustrator. Born in Scheveningen, from a family of famous Dutch artists, Anton Mauve being his grandfather. Studied in The Hague and Amsterdam. Lived in Lunteren from 1943 until he moved to Milton Combe near Yelverton in 1979. He visited many countries, notably Texas USA., Australia, Greece, Italy and Kenya. These places feature in his many interesting sketch books. His studies of Devon and the Cornish tin mines are spontaneous and well observed. From an earlier traditional approach to painting, the viewer can observe from looking at his later work, an interest in abstraction was developing. This small collection gives a chance to reappraise a somewhat neglected professional artist work; an artist who was descended from a long line of distinguished Dutch painters.
