An inscription on a label verso reads: ‘ This water-colour drawing was made by Capt. Sidney Bridgford RN in the evening after Garibaldi’s victory in Sicily, which decided the fate of Italy, 11th May 1880. Capt. Bridgford’s ship was stationed off Sicily and he used to make sketches of what took place for the Illustrated London News. This is the finished version of such a sketch. Arthur Wilde Parsons RWA (1854-1931) Colour Venice signed lower left A Wilde Parsons and inscribed below Bristol Savages Wednesday Evening Sketch 10 November 1915. oil on board 26 x 35cm The Bristol Savages is an art club formed in 1904 and is still in operation today. Arthur Wilde Parsons was a founder of the Club whose premise is a celebration of the concept of the noble savage which in the late Victorian era was seen as something to aspire to. The Native American culture still plays a large part in the Savages traditions. The title of the present painting is because every Wednesday evening since its inception the Clubs members have communed and the Chairman who in 1915 was Charles Kelsey has presented them with a subject from which they have just two hours to create a picture. This process is still the basis upon which artists are tested before they are allowed to become members of the organisation
