In 1952 Gard Allen took up a major travelling scholarship to Spain, France, Italy, Sicily and North Africa before settling in Carlisle where he taught for many years at the College of Art and Design. It was here that he taught Percy Kelly. He exhibited abroad and latterly alongside his wife, Sadie Allen, at their Hethersgill chapel studio. During the mid-1980s Gard Allen turned his attention to ink and watercolour. His interest in the meeting point between the natural and the industrial persists throughout his career.]
