ROYAL DOULTON; an extremely rare and possibly unique prototype figure of Wallis Simpson, in a black evening gown with white fur stole, model 909, dated 1.10.35, height 29cm.This lot is accompanied by a letter from Louise Irvine of Pascoe & Co, indicating that the impressed model and date codes are consistent with Doulton's markings on figures of this era. The shape book records indicate that model 909 was not made and there is no photograph in the shape book which is not unusual for prototype figures. Furthermore, she indicates that it is not unusual to see an early Royal Doulton prototype without a backstamp. Wallis Simpson featured on the cover of The Sketch magazine in March 1935 and Leslie Harradine often took inspiration from magazine covers. The date of the figure is consistent with Wallis Simpson being in the news, and perhaps Royal Doulton decided not to introduce the piece due to the controversy surrounding her affair with King Edward VIII. Provenance: Private collection. Condition Report: Very light crazing to the glaze. Restoration to her neck and hair, it looks like the head has been broken off and restored to a good standard, restoration to the bottom of her dress, also there signs of a hairline crack to the base which has been sprayed in part.

A scarce and highly emotive WW1 era preparatory paint sketch, relating to the memorial for Lt Bernard Bradly Gough M.R.C.S. L.R.C.P. (1873-1916) Of the Royal Army Medical Corps. The sketch exactly matches that of the actual carved monument found at St Michael’s Church, Compton Martin, Somerset (see image). The sketch was made by Henry Strachey (1863-1940), an alumni of the Slade School of Fine Art. Graduating as a Doctor in 1897, practicing at various locations before settling at Compton Martin as a General Practitioner. Like many men of the era, Bernard felt it his duty to serve his country, and volunteered for service in France & Belgium. He received a commission as Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps in June 1915, and was posted to the Lahore British Military Hospital in Calais. He was posted to a frontline trench in February 1916, while attached to the 8th Battalion Staffordshire Regiment. While tending to the wounded and sick, his position took a direct hit from a German shell, killing him, and 9 other men around him instantly. When his body was discovered by a fellow officer, Lt Raby, Bernard was said to be still holding surgical scissors in one hand, and dressing in another. He is interred at the West Vlaanderren cemetery, near Ypres. He was survived by his wife and daughter. The painting is framed and glazed, and measures approximately 38.4cm x 38.4cm. Condition: generally good. Some water staining to the bottom section where it has crept under the glass, but this doesn’t detract.

Lalique enhanced the design with opaque white and shades of blue. The lower sheet of a precisely drawn geometric inkwell is left in graphite. These drawings have never been seen publicly. They are unique studies of museum quality as they were acquired directly from the private collection of the descendants of Rene Lalique. Jacek Malczewski (Polish, 1854-1929)Self Portrait Sketch signed and dated 'J. Malczewski / 1923' (lower left)oil on canvas43.2 x 49.5 cm (17 x 19 1/2 in).unframedFootnotes:ProvenanceAlfred and Maria Tarski, Berkeley, California; then by family descent to the Estate of Eva Kristina Ehrenfeucht.N.B.A painter and illustrator, Jacek Malczewski was born in Radom in 1854 and was educated at the Krakow School of Fine Arts as well as the Paris École des Beaux Arts from 1876-1877. Malczewski is credited for the rise in popularity of symbolism in late 19th- and early 20th-century Poland. Through his use of symbolic motifs and allegories, Malczewski provided a lens to the political turmoil that he experienced leading up to and following Poland's 1863 uprising. This event became a persistent theme in his works, in which he expressed ideas of independence and nationalism. Malczewski was fond of self-portraits and often used his own likeness as reference for allegorical figures. This is especially true in his later works such as in his series My Life (1914-1920).Along with his wife, Maria, Jewish-American logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski was an avid collector of Polish art and amassed an impressive collection of works from some of Poland's most influential artists. Like many artists in their collection, Mr. Tarski was born in Warsaw, Poland to Jewish parents in 1901. Mr. Tarski was educated in Poland at the University of Warsaw and became a member of the Lwów–Warsaw School, one of the most important schools of Polish logic and philosophy, and of the Warsaw School of Mathematics. In 1929 he married Maria Witkowska and they began collecting art. Maria worked as a courier for the army in the Polish–Soviet War. They had two children together, and in 1939 the family immigrated to the United States where Mr. Tarski taught and carried out research in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley until his death in 1983.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
