An interesting WWI & WWII period part completed illustrated autograph album, relating to H.M.Y. Medusa II, contents include pen and ink drawing of the ship, Admiral Lord Charles Beresfords autograph (pasted in), the crews autographs - 1919, a naive pencil sketch of an Orkney lighthouse etc. Notes: launched 1906 built for Alfred Farquar by Day, Summers & Co Ltd, Southampton, a three masted steam yacht, hired by the Admiralty as an auxilliary patrol yacht fitted with a 12 pounder and 6 pounder AA deck gu, renamed Medussa II 6/1915, rehired by the Admiralty 9/1939 and renamed Mollusc, sunk by enemy air attack 3/1941 off Blyth. Consigned by a descendent of the crew.

Jad Davies (1909-1998) LIGHTNING SKETCHES OF GRAHAM HILL AND FOUR OTHER SPORTSMEN a collection of five original caricatures variously in crayon, ink and pencil, the first of Graham Hill, signed by the subject and artist, also inscribed 'About 60 seconds sketch. As Graham Hill was near me, at the VIP opening of the new Ashford Kent Airport, 1969. A typical very fast sketch with a Biro'; 26 by 19cm., 10 by 7in.; the second of Reg Harris bearing his signature, inscribed 'World Champion Racing Cyclist, President Pickwick Bicycle Club', an irregular shaped cutting, overall 19 by 14cm., 7 by 5in.; two smaller sketches of Allan Watkins, England test cricketer (1948-52), and Derek Ufton, Kent cricketer and Charlton Athletic footballer (1949-60), both signed by the subject, the latter on a 1960 fixture list; plus another of John Blackburn, 1973 captain of Penryn RFC, inscribed and signed by the artist, 29 by 21cm., 11 by 8in.; sold with copies of information relating to Jad's career (6). Although untrained as an artist, Jad Davies made 'Lightning Sketches' of all and sundry that he met, either casually or from a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in the business and sporting worlds. In a career that spanned over 60 years, his subjects eventually numbered the good and the famous in their thousands, most of whom were delighted to autograph their likeness on the spot.

Several annotations relating to the United triumph by Riley and it is signed by Crerand, Busby and Riley and dated 68. Measures 42cm x 52cm. Good
§ Paul Neagu (Romanian, 1938–2004) Hand-drawn diagrams for the artist's 1989 sculpture 'Hyphen', with another sketch for "Fist City" verso inscribed to the top "Hyphen 1989 P. Neagu" pencil 38 x 58cm (15 x 23in) Provenance: Private collection. The vendor's company, Architectural Stainless, made the final stainless steel sculpture of "Hyphen" for the artist from these drawings. The same company made all of Neagu's stainless steel sculptures, including his well know sculpture 'Edgerunner', which was a gift to the people of Islington from the Romanian Cultural Institute, Tony Neagu and the Paul Neagu Estate - "Edgerunner" was erected at Owen's Field, Islington, London, which was near the artist's home and studio. Paul Neagu created his 'Hyphen' sculptures in the mid 1970s, and focused on these forms for the rest of his career. This lot includes photographs from the vendor of the artist with his sculptures at Architectural Steel, one featuring his 'Starhead' sculpture.
Donald Friend (Australian, 1915-1989) "Onward to Victory, Gay Militants !" signed lower right "for Chris Hogwood, Sydney '82, Donald Friend" pen and ink on a leaf torn from a wire-bound notebook, with a sketch of a house on the reverse 18 x 25cm (7 x 10in) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE. The page is torn from a notebook. Strong clear image with houses to the reverse.
§ Gloria Jarvis (British, b. 1925) A sketchbook; sketch of a Ballerina, signed lower left "Gloria Jarvis", watercolour, 18 x 14cm; Certificate from the Italian Academy for Gloria Jarvis, 1980, and a wooden portable easel (4) Gloria Jarvis trained at St. Martin's School of Art in London and later at the University of Florence. She later became a lecturer of historic costume and an instructor of costume drawing. However, her real love was for painting. When she married, she moved to Brussels with her husband and much of her work is in permanent collections in Belgium, a variety of oils, water colour, pastel, ink and gouache. She had a very successful career, painting Paolo of Liege and Margaret Thatcher. In her later life, Gloria returned home to England and turned more and more to writing. Ballerina sketch - signature is a little smudged, some foxing to the edges.
Harry John Pearson, RBA (British, 1872-1933) Portrait of Miss Audrey Hughes in boy's dress signed lower right "to my friend Steve, H John Pearson, RBA" oil on canvas, unframed 40 x 33cm (16 x 13in) Provenance: A gift to Steven Spurrier from Harry John Pearson, and by descent. Harry John Pearson, RBA (1872-1933) was known mainly for his portrait and figure subjects, especially of children and society women, many of which were illustrated in periodicals of the day such as Colour Magazine and Woman’s Pictorial. He trained at The Royal Academy Schools and spent some time working in The Netherlands prior to World War I. Pearson exhibited at the Royal Academy 1916-1927, and extensively with the Royal Society of British Artists of which group he was elected a full member in 1915. Pearson also showed his work with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal West of England Academy, the International Society, the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool and he was President of the Langham Sketch Club. He lived in Ealing, west London and died in March 1933 aged 61 Unframed and with a scratch approx. 3in horizontally across the sitter's shorts. Scuffed around the edges. Inscribed with the artist's address of 23 Fitzroy Square to the reverse.
§ Monica Rawlins (Welsh, 1903-1990) Study of a small Gypsy Girl in a red skirt and black cloak pencil and watercolour on paper, with another sketch of a girl to the reverse 32 x 17cm (12 x 7in) Provenance: From the collection of Elisabeth Luard, Brynmeheryn. Small tear to the left of her cloak, dirty and with some foxing.
§ Duncan Grant (British, 1885-1978) The White Coffee Pot signed lower right "D Grant", inscribed with title on the reverse, and with a sketch of a girl on the reverse oil on board, in a green and gold painted frame 81 x 60cm (32 x 23in) Provenance: The Bloomsbury Workshop, 12 Galen Place, London, WC1. Born in 1885, Duncan Grant spent his early life in India, returning to Britain in 1893. Grant was encouraged by the French painter Simon Bussy, who later introduced Grant to Matisse in 1909. Grant, along with Maynard Keynes, Roger Fry and Vanessa Bell (whom Grant had a daughter with, Angelica Garnett), was a central figure of the organisation of artists and writers called Bloomsbury. Perhaps a little dirty but fine.
Henry Scott Tuke, RA, RWS (British, 1858-1929). Two studies of a young man on the beach. Oil on board, unsigned. Early 20th Century. Both studies are painted on the either side of the same board. One a study of a young boy seated on rocks showing his head and torso, also painted verso with a sketch of a boy bending forwards on the beach. 33cm x 24cm. These studies are believed to have been painted as studies for Tuke's works depicting young boys bathing in the open air around Falmouth Harbour in Cornwall in the early 20th Century. Tuke's works are held in major collections worldwide and similar works include 'Head of T .C. Tiddy', 'Aquamarine (study)', and 'August Blue (study)' housed at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society. Tuke was educated at the Slade School of Fine Art and was considered a founder member of the Newlyn School.Provenance: purchased amongst a large group of paintings at a car boot sale by the vendor within the last five years.

Purchased at Sotheby's, 1972. CONDITION REPORT: Much of the condition can be seen on the additional images. Canvas binding is worn. Most pages are there. Some of the drawings are on the sketch book pages and some loose on scraps of paper in the book.
