Signed in bold blue ink `Barbara´ to a clear area of the image adding a heart sketch immediately beneath her signature. EX £100-120
KROES DOUTZEN: (1985- ) Dutch Model and Actress. A Victoria´s Secret Angel and L´Oreal top model. Signed 8 x 11.5 photograph by Doutzen, the image depicting the top model smoking in a top less sensual half length pose. Signed in bold blue ink with her name alone beneath a heart sketch to a clear area of the image. EX £100-150
MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) French Artist and renowned Painter. A leading figure in modern Art. An excellent A.L.S., `H Matisse', with drawing, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. [1949-50], [to his son?], in French. The letter bears at the heading a sketch in Matisse´s hand, depicting a child face with a crown on his head, and states in part `Happy father and mother of this beautiful child! Thank you for thinking in showing to us this masterpiece.. All goes well here, good health, the chapel goes well too..´ and further concluding `I give up wanting to understand people…´ Written and drawn in bold blue ink by Matisse, an attractive document with sketch. About EX £4000-6000The present letter is probably written to his son Pierre Matisse (1900-1989) and refers to one of Matisse´s grandchildren. The chapel Matisse refers to is the Chapelle du Rosaire at Vence, a village between Nice and Antibes in the south of France. He worked on the chapel project using the cut-out method from 1948 to 1951. Matisse was diagnosed with abdominal cancer in 1941 and surgery left him chair and bed bound. Painting and sculpture became almost impossible physical challenges which made him turn to creating cut paper collages and decoupages with the help of assistants. His closest collaborator was Monique Bourgeois, a student nurse who helped Matisse after his surgery, also his model, who became a nun in 1946, and the reason of this chapel work by Matisse. Bourgeois joined Matisse in Vence and helped him to achieve his chapel painting project.
HERGÉ: (1907-1983) Georges Prosper Remi. Belgian Cartoonist. Best known for creating the series of comics The Adventures of Tintin. T.L.S., Hergé, one page, folio, Brussels, 27th October 1976, on the “Studios Hergé” printed stationery, to J.R. Paques, in French. The letter bears at the heading an attractive embossed sketch of Tintin and his dog Milou alongside the company name. Hergé thanks his correspondent for his kind letter and his enthusiastic words for the Tintin magazine and for the film Moi, Tintin (1976). Accompanied by the original printed stationery envelope. EX £600-900
GOULD CHESTER: (1900-1985) American Cartoonist. Best known as the creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip, which he wrote and drew over forty years. A.N.S., Chester Gould, alongside a sketch of his hero Dick Tracy, a profile head and shoulders drawing in his hand, one page, 12mo card, n.p., 2nd June 1978, to Chris. Drawing and text in red ink. Gould states in part `I hope our new team keeps you reading Tracy´. To the right side of the card bearing a printed sketch of Dick Tracy, identical to Gould´s hand drawing. A good and clean signature example and sketch. EX £80-100
REINHARDT MAX: (1873-1943) Austrian-born American Actor and Director. An unusual printed 4to drawing profile portrait of Reinhardt. The Hermann Struck sketch is boldly signed in pencil at the base of the image by the American director with his name alone (`Max Reinhardt´). Few corner creases, small overall staining and lower edge irregularly trimmed, none affecting the portrait or signature. G £100-150Hermann Struck (1876-1944) German Artist, best known for his etching works.
COCTEAU JEAN: (1889-1963) French Writer, Playwright and Filmmaker. A.L.S., Jean Cocteau, twice, one page, 4to, Le Lavandou, Var, 2nd July 1922, to an unidentified editor, in French. Cocteau, in his usual untidy writing, with annotations to the borders, states in part `I have nothing else but this sonnet which I send to you as a testimony of my good wishes for your magazine. Make the corrections and check punctuation is fine. I want it very exact. I enclose a Picasso´s drawing, make a copy and send it back to me. Here you have the description ``Jean Cocteau and M. Chabelska, creator of the little American girl in Parade. Rome 1916. Sketch by Picasso.´´ Cocteau further refers to a critic he will send to his correspondent and to his weakness defending young musicians, also referring to his heath to a border annotation `I will respond to you later regarding the conferences, due to my health, still vague´. The sonnet and the Picasso´s sketch referred to are no longer present. Folded thin paper, with two binder holes to the left border, several small tears to the edges, and overall small creasing to the right edge. F to G £600-900Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) Spanish Painter. Cocteau refers to the ballet in one act Parade, music by Eric Satie (1866-1925), based on a Cocteau theme, with decorations and costumes by Picasso. Marie Chabelska played the role of the little American girl.
CAMPBELL ROY: (1901-1957) His name being Ignatius Royston Dunnachie Campbell. South African Poet. A controversial figure, widely considered one of the best poets of the 20´s and 30´s. An excellent signed black ink drawing with annotation, `Roy Campbell´, twice, oblong 4to, the attractive drawing being a Bullfighting scene, showing a bullfighter horse rider confronting the bull, the whole beneath a bull head sketch. Signed in bold black ink `By Roy Campbell, with drawings by Roy & Teresa Campbell´. Annotated at the base of the page `Dear Poet, Forgive me, I forgot to add the autobiographic information on the other envelope.´ Framed in wood and glazed to an overall size of 12 x 9 (30 x 23 cm). VG £250-350It has often been suggested by critics and his own daughters that his support for Franco´s Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War caused him to be blacklisted from modern poetry anthologies.
HESSE HERMANN: (1877-1962) German-born Swiss Poet, Novelist and Painter. Nobel prize in Literature, 1946. T.L.S., H Hesse, two pages, 8vo, Autumn 1958, in German. The attractive 8vo yellow page bearing at the heading a colourful watercolour pen & ink sketch featuring a countryside house. The typed text being a poem by Hesse, entitled “Ein Traum”, `A Dream´ a twenty four verses poem stating `Rooms we cross with fear, Faces we do not recognize, Slowly one after the other, lights become pale..´ Signed in bold dark ink at the base of the poem. VG £600-900The author Christian Schneider wrote on his `Hermann Hesse´ book, `Hesse learnt how to incorporate his writing into his drawings with the ease of a graphic artist, as in the illustration of his poem Ein Traum (A Dream)´.
