Colonial School. Mexico or Peru. 17th - 18th century."True portrait of Our Lady of the Estrella of Enciso"Oil on canvas. 142 x 103 cm. There is a handwritten inscription in the lower margin: "La Milagrosa imagen de Nª Sª de la Estrella de la Vª Dencisso"On the back is a sketch of a figure on horseback. In a carved, gilded and silvered period wooden frame. The Church of Our Lady of Enciso is located in la Rioja, Spain. In its main altarpiece, which was built between 1647 and 1652, there is the image of Our Lady of the Star, in late 15th century Hispanic Flemish style. The image of Nuestra Señora de la Estrella de Enciso (Our Lady of the Star of Enciso) became widespread due to the engraving of it which was created by the Flemish printmaker Ana Heylan in the mid 17th century. One of these prints is kept at the National Library in Madrid (Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid). As Antonio Moreno Garrido explains in his writing "La iconografía de la virgen de la antigua en el grabado granadino del siglo XVII: una plancha inédita de Ana Heylan":"In the 17th century, single prints and especially those for worship came from European workshops, except for those with very local themes. These, of course, were made by engravers working in Spain. Carrete Parrondo writes: "The sanctuaries, convents and chapels with the most popular or prestigious advocations of Mary commissioned the most outstanding engravers to reproduce the images that were worshiped. The same occurred in small towns, where they turned to the printmakers from large cities. The town of Enciso commissioned Ana Heylan, a Flemish engraver established in Granada, to make the print of their patron, the Virgen de la Estrella"Bibliography: Antonio Moreno Garrido. "La iconografía de la virgen de la antigua en el grabado granadino del siglo XVII: una plancha inédita de Ana Heylan": Pages. 207 and 209 Fig II.
The sketchbooks of Hamilton Short, South African Gold Prospector, Merchant & Maritime Enthusiast.A 19th century gold tooled black Morocco bound sketch book 21x17cm, a linen covered hard back sketch book 16x24.5cm and one other small gilt edged notebook 12.5x7.5cm together with a later string bound 'Snapshots' album circa 1930s-1940s.These remarkable sketchbooks are the work of Hamilton & Maxwell Short who were born in Cape Town in 1846 and 1849 to John Bell Short and Emma Hamilton, both originally Scottish, who wed in Cape Town in 1842. Hamilton, their third child was employed as a clerk, though clearly was a very talented draftsman with a passion for ships and sailing. We know that John Bell Short was the Superintendent of the Convict Station in the Docks in Cape Town and we can see from a sketch in one of the books that the Shorts lived a house on the Breakwater. From this enviable location the comings and goings of all vessels using this busy harbour were keenly observed and skilfully documented by Hamilton & Maxwell. Every ship is beautifully drawn, all rigging accurately depicted and the name and date annotated. The linen bound book particularly documents known events such as the loss of 17 vessels in a great storm in May 1865. RMS Athens (lost with all hands) Galatea, Royal Arthur, Royal Minstrel are all illustrated including a painting of Capt. Smith of RMS Athens that must have been copied from a photograph in contemporary accounts. The Morocco bound sketchbook has approximately 120 well-filled pages of paintings and sketches of mostly maritime and nautical subjects, some early maritime photographs and newspaper cuttings. There are approximately 30 blank pages save the occasional pencil sketch. The painted frontispiece is annotated Hamilton Short 1871. This book contains the finer quality drawings and paintings of the collection. Many are pen and ink and of remarkably quality elevating them far above mere amateur sketches. The excellent penmanship and attention to intricate detail displays a draftsman of intelligence with a highly inquisitive mind married to artistic flair. The linen bound book contains approximately 105 well-filled pages with paintings and sketches from the 1860s. Although some of the drawings in this book are in the very fine style of Hamilton, the rest is most likely to be by the hand of Hamilton’s brother Maxwell. It is less stylised but more descriptive in its contents as it depicts places and events as well as beautifully painted ships. The smaller notebook is Hamilton’s. It contains some 55 pages, some loose, of notes, sums, co-ordinates and sketches of ships, much of which document a trip to England and Scotland in 1877.In 1867 gold was discovered in the Transvaal and the world was enflamed by gold fever. Hamilton Short married Emma Tucker in 1869, their fourth child was born by July 1880. At this time Short had been in business as a general merchant in Cape Town but he left for the Transvaal in 1884. Letters from Hamilton to his eldest son Herbert still held within the family archive paint a desperate picture of his struggles with debt, malaria, poor legal advice, the death of a friend, bad weather and all manner of deprivations. In a letter from Barberton dated April 6th 1888 he writes: ‘Heavy rain set in at 9.30 pm and lasted till 5am this morning and today we have a frightful hot day – Now Bertie fever is one thing and Worry another. Believe me the latter is the worse. Your loving Father Hamilton Short. In his last letter to his son dated September 16th 1888, he starts: ‘Mr Dear Bertie, Really I have not the heart to Write – as to mines in the neighbourhood of this town there is nothing doing, even the Bay Reef has stopped, though it is said that the extension of the Middleton has turned out rich – but little faith is to be placed in it.’After the family received this letter Hamilton Short disappeared and the family never heard from him again. Despite diligent enquiries into hospital records and the following of various leads placing Hamilton as a bookkeeper in Pretoria in 1892 and also as a brick maker in Natal, he was never located. In 1925 a court granted an order of presumption of death. Correspondence between the family and those looking for Hamilton concluded: “His whereabouts will be and remain one of the unrevealed mysteries”Sickness, depression, guilt, these may all have been contributing factors to Hamilton Short’s disappearance. All we have left are these beautifully filled sketchbooks that he sent back to his family and were referred to in his letters.
