Usually, when Mother, Grandma, the Aunts and Miss Carter, as well as George and I set off along Lees Road on our way, either to look at Buckley and Procters shop or go on to the market. We liked Oldham Market, especially on Fridays, but we had to remember that a train load of bulls were unloaded just behind Lees Road and were driven through the streets, through Lees and Springhead until they came to the fields. Oh, but what a to-do it was. We had listened quite a long time near that Pawn shop door, when Mother said she couldn`t hear anything, so we set off, fortunately we hadn`t gone far when we had to run and get in the shop. Just then we saw Mr Taylor who waved his stick at them and the year was 1909". Provenance: gifted by the artist to her physician and thence by direct descent to the present vendor.

WILLIAM FREDERICK MITCHELL (1845-1914)The battleship Neptune at anchor offshore at duskWatercolourSigned and inscribed W.F. Mitchell 1879-1938 (lower left)5 x 7½in. (12.5 x 19cm.); together with a preparatory sketch for the battleship Albemarle, pen and ink heightened with watercolour, signed W. Fred Mitchell (lower right) — 6½ x 9in. (16.5 x 23cm.) (2) Built by Dudgeon at Millwall, Neptune was laid down in 1874 and launched in 1878 for the Brazilian Navy as the Independencia but purchased for the Royal Navy prior to completion, thanks to the panic caused by a potential war with Russia. First commissioned in 1883, her sea-going career proved a short one and she was sold for scrapping in 1903; on her final passage down the harbour at Portsmouth, whilst en route to the breakers, she managed to ram Victory and collide with Hero thereby cementing her already somewhat tarnished reputation.Albemarle was one of the six `Duncan` class pre-`Dreadnought` battleships ordered in 1898-99. Built at Chatham, launched in March 1901 and completed in 1903, Albemarle sported a main armament of 4-12in. guns and, despite her age, rendered useful service in the Great War before being scrapped in 1920. This lot is signed and inscribed W.F. Mitchell 1879-1038 (lower left) and not as stated in the catalogue, and further inscribed “Neptune”-1038 on the reverse. 1038 is Mitchell’s personal catalogue number.
ADMIRAL SIR JOHN DUCKWORTH / CHARLES BRISBANE: AN AUTOGRAPH ORDER OF BATTLE FOR THE JAMAICA STATION FROM 24TH MAY 1803Charles Brisbane`s copy of the Order of Battle and Order of Sailing, written in a clear hand over a single folio sheet and detailing the eight 74s and their Commanders and a sketch drawing of starting positions, annotated in lower margin: To. Charles Brisbane Esqr. Captain of HM Ship Goliath. By Command of the Rear Admiral... Given on Board the Leviathan Port Royal Harbour Jamaica this 24th May 1803 and signed `J.T. Duckworth` — 12½ x 15½in. (32 x 39.5cm.); together with a portrait print, probably a bookplate, of Brisbane from 1808, in period frame.(2) In 1803 Duckworth assumed the chief command at Jamaica where he was again preoccupied with the affairs of San Domingo. Considerable French reinforcements there threatened the American mainland as well as British possessions. It seems this Order of Battle was a sensible precaution in case they were surprised but was never in fact required. The eight 74`s under his command were: Hercule (Solomon Ferris); Theseus (John Bligh); Bellepheron (John Loring); Leviathan (Duckworth/Capt. Dunn); Cumberland (Bayntun); Elephant (George Dundas); Goliath (Charles Brisbane) and Vanguard (James Walker). Duckworth was promoted vice-admiral in April 1804.
