He was an expert on folklore and held the position of Secretary of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland between 1913 and 1935. A preparatory sketch for this oil painting is illustrated in `Modern Scottish Painters, Number Seven: James Cowie` by Cordelia Oliver (University Press, Edinburgh, 1980). Plate 43, page 63.
