William Henry Brooke ARHA (1772-1860) Ascent of the Galtee Mountains Oil on canvas, 35.3 x 53.4 cm (14 x 21") Signed and inscribed on artists label verso No1. Ascent of the Gaultee (Sic) Mountains/ W.H. Brooke, 17 Newman Street Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1823, no. 333 Literature: The Knight of Glin and Anne Crookshank, The Watercolours of Ireland, London, 1994, pp.95-96 (where illustrated as a lithograph) The son of the Irish history painter, Henry Brooke (1738-1806), William Henry Brooke spent much of his career in London. He is best known as an illustrator of books and periodicals alongside a successful practice as a portrait and genre painter. He was a regular exhibitor at both the Royal Academy from 1810 until 1826 and the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1827 to 1846. Based on a sketch by the antiquarian and writer, Thomas Crofton Croker, the amusing scene depicted is described in great detail in his book, Researches in the South of Ireland, London, 1824, pp.32-33. Three smartly dressed tourists, Croker himself on the left, his wife Marianne and Marianne's father, the landscape painter Francis Nicholson, all uncomfortably ensconced in a simple farmer's cart with but a few sheaves of hay to cushion the bumps of an unmade mountain track. Marianne holds on to the cart and her sketch book with a grim forbearance while the two men appear rather more nonchalant. All of this to the great amusement of the local bareback cart driver who no doubt had the double pleasure of schadenfreude and payment to boot.

Seán Keating PRHA HRA HRSA (1889-1977). SKETCH OF DAN BREEN, 1958 The commission to paint a portrait of Dan Breen was given to Seán Keating by Todd Andrews, Managing Director of Bord na Móna, in the Spring of 1958. The two men got on extremely well, and Keating found Breen to be an excellent model, very talkative and very interesting. The artist tended to make many sketches before he began to work on canvas, as exemplified in this fine example. Keating completed the oil painting of Breen in the summer of 1958. It was exhibited in the RHA in 1959 and in the major retrospective of the artist`s work at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in 1963.Dr Éimear O`Connor HRHATRIARC-Irish Art Research CentreTrinity College Dublin. charcoal and pastel heightened with white chalk on tinted paper signed lower right P Measurements: 19.75 by 17in., 49.375 by 42.5cm.
1922 (July 4) Millmount Barracks Drogheda by Thomas Markey An impressive watercolour and pencil drawing heightened with white, signed and dated lower right. Titled Shelling Millmount Barracks Drogheda July 4th 1922" Showing the 18 pounder artillery field gun that was positioned at The Dominican Church on Wellington Quay to help bring an end to the siege of the barracks. Interestingly this appears to be a contemporary drawing by Markey rather than a retrospective historical study. Theo Snoddy in `Dictionary of Irish Artists 20th Century` (p. 413) notes that "During the civil war when the Free State forces were shelling Millmount barracks, he sat behind the `big gun` in Dominick Street, sketching the scene. Later he transferred the sketch to canvas. The Shelling of Millmount 1922 is in Millmount Museum run by the Old Drogheda Society."
