ATTRIBUTED TO HM QUEEN VICTORIA (1819-1901) An en grisaille sketch of deer in a landscape ink and wash, 15.5cm x 15.75cm, framed together with an ink inscription "From the Queen's blotting book, Scone Palaceâ€. Note: Queen Victoria and Prince Albert stayed at Scone Palace with the 4th Earl of Mansfield on 6th September 1842, during their first visit to Scotland. The royal tour, which lasted two weeks, was largely organised by the 5th Duke of Buccleuch, Lord Lieutenant of the County of Midlothian and Gold Stick of Scotland, and his wife Charlotte, who was Queen Victoria's Mistress of the Robes, in conjunction with the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. Victoria described Scone in a letter to her uncle Leopold, King of the Belgians, as "fine, but rather gloomy". A watercolour of Scone by William Leighton Leitch was later presented to Victoria and Albert as a souvenir of their visit. In 1846 Leitch became drawing master to Her Majesty and The Royal Family, a post he held for twenty two years. The Queen was a keen artist, with animals providing a common subject for the Monarch's watercolours and drawings. In 1847, on another trip to Scotland, The Queen produced a pencil drawing of a stag in a highland landscape after Edwin Henry Landseer's mural on the drawing room wall at Ardverikie Shooting Lodge.

SIR JOHN LAVERY RA RSA RHA (IRISH/BRITISH 1856 - 1941), SKETCH, THE HOSPITABLE GATE oil on panel, signed, titled and dated '86 26.5cm x 40.5cm Framed Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 22 July 1987. lot 150. Sotheby's, London, 6 May 2010, lot 4. Note: John Lavery was welcomed as a celebrity by collectors in Paisley after his return from France at the end of 1884. They were impressed by avant-garde ambitions expressed in large canvases such as On the Loing, An Afternoon Chat, (Ulster Museum, Belfast), shown at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in February 1885. Although he established a studio in Glasgow, these wealthy middle-class local worthies were keen to retain his services. The wool and cotton manufacturer, James Fulton, for instance, offered Lavery a cottage/studio, close to his baronial mansion on his estate at The Glen, Paisley, while the artist produced portraits of members of his family. William MacKean, a soap manufacturer and the town’s Provost also provided portrait commissions and some of these are likely to have been shown at the artist’s first solo exhibition at the George A. Clark Town Hall at the end of November 1886. This grand edifice was funded four years earlier by the Clark family, owners of Anchor Mills, one of Paisley’s principal employers, who were also Lavery patrons. No catalogue for Lavery’s first show is known to be in existence, but he advertised it as ‘Portraits, Pictures & Sketches painted in the Neighbourhood’. We may however assume that in addition to views of The Glen, and smaller pictures painted in the garden of the MacBrides’ house at nearby Cathcart, where Lavery had worked on his most famous canvas, The Tennis Party, (Aberdeen Art Gallery), the exhibition also contained sketches like that of the ‘Hospitable Gate’. An earlier street scene, Lady on a Safety Tricycle 1885, (Government Art Collection), is however thought to be an entrance to Cartbank. This tentative watercolour lacks the bold handling, vivid realization and atmospheric qualities of Sketch of The Hospitable Gate. The swift notation and autumnal palette of this suburban street scene indicates that it was painted shortly before Lavery’s exhibition opened. Although there is little detail of the house, it is possible that it represents Chapel House in Ardgowan Street, Paisley - then on the fringe of the Blackhall Estate and the river White Cart Water. In the 1880s this four-square Georgian house on a leafy lane, was owned by James Clark, one of the brothers who inherited Anchor Mills. The building’s square façade, its placing in relation to the street, and the shallow pitch to its roof, suggests that the ‘hospitable gate’ could lead to just such a house.

A Regency rosewood and brass inlaid library table attributed to GillowsCirca 1820, with line-inlay, the gilt tooled leather inset top above six short opposing mahogany-lined frieze drawers, with stylised foliate strapwork inlaid angles, on vertical end supports headed with scrolled foliate corbels, terminating in scrolled scallop shell capped and acanthus carved lion paw feet with recessed brass castors, with a ring turned baluster cross stretcher, 168cm wide x 99cm deep x 74cm high, (66in wide x 38 1/2in deep x 29in high)Footnotes:An early Gillows model of end support comparable to that on the present table, with its opposing upper and lower scrolled corbels combined with paw feet, can be found on a design for one of two rosewood sofa tables made for John Gladstone Esq. This drawing which appears in the Estimate Sketch Books, dated 13 April 1813, is also illustrated in S.E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol I, 2008, Woodbridge, p. 265, pl. 270.Another drawing, dated 5 September 1821, for a similar rosewood library table to the offered lot likewise features in Gillows' Sketch Books, p. 3126, City of Westminster Archives. Evidently this particular example, which was commissioned by Mr Earle, was most likely executed by the Gillows firm at approximately the same time as the above.Further related sofa tables feature in one of Gillow & Co.'s plans for a library layout, which was provided for H.J. Thompson in 1830, while the business was located at 176 Oxford Street, Ibid, Vol II, 2008, Woodbridge, p.352, pl's. E9 & E10.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A set of nine late Victorian walnut chairs by Gillowsprobably retailed by James Shoolbred & Co.Including an armchair, each with a channelled back and seat frame, on lappet capped ring turned and fluted tapering front legs terminating in brass cappings and castors, with splayed rear legs and an H-stretcher, variously stamped: 'GILLOW, 56699, JAS. SHOOLBRED & CO, 6266', the armchair: 66cm wide, 63cm deep, 100cm high; each side chair: 52cm wide, 53cm deep, 93cm high. (9)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe present lot was supplied to the Congregational Church in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, at some point in the late 19th century or very beginning of the 20th century according to the Church's records. By repute the armchair was used by the Minister of the Church while the remaining eight were for the Church Elders. The model for this set of chairs closely follows a Gillow's design which appears in the Estimate Sketch Books during either the 1880s or 1890s. However since they are also stamped for James Shoolbred & Co. It seems highly probably that they were actually purchased later on from Shoolbred, which operated both as a retailer and cabinet maker even into the 1920s.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 46

Frederick Rowland Emett (British, 1906-1990): A 1-inch scale model of Emett's masterpiece automaton 'A Quiet Afternoon in the Cloud Cuckoo Valley',English, early 1980's,constructed using paper, card, wire, glue, recycled pencils, plastic beads, cotton wool, wood, and fabric flowers affixed to a shaped wooden base, the model depicting elements from Emett's automaton 'A Quiet Afternoon in the Cloud Cuckoo Valley' which was completed in 1984, the base titled and inscribed in Emett's hand Sketch model. Scale about 1' to 1'. The model depicts the tale of a pleasure trip on the 'Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Railway'; the centre of the creation featuring a train called 'Wild Goose', driven by an ingenious driver who toasts tea-cakes on the fire-box as the train trundles along a raised railway line. At 'Cowparsley Meadow' a farmer plays his harp soothingly to his herd of cows, who nod their heads in appreciation. There is a large water wheel that turns timelessly at 'Far Tottering', its brass cups beaten and misshapen from years of use. In a secluded dell at 'Wisteria Halt', there is a beautiful flowering tree on top of which sits a clock – originally intended as the focal point of the whole piece. At 'Shrimphaven Sands', a fisherman can be seen out at sea, hauling in a net in which, rather surprisingly, he appears to have caught a mermaid. As 'Wild Goose' continues its journey past 'Twittering Woods, an ornithologist is seen cycling along with his camera – he is disguised as a tree. On the beach at 'Oyster Creek', a bathing hut is occupied by an elderly gentleman dressed in full length Victorian swimwear, who dives dramatically into the water from time to time. The model is housed in a Perspex case;overall 29.5in long x 15in wide x 20in high (75cm x 38cm x 51cm); model 24in x 11in (61cm x 28cm)Footnotes:Frederick Rowland Emett OBE (British, B.1906 – D.1990) was a celebrated cartoonist, inventor, designer, engineer and constructor of whimsical kinetic sculpture (automata). Born in London, son of a businessman and amateur inventor, and the grandson of Queen Victoria's engraver, Emett studied art and quickly became one of the most popular cartoonists at Punch Magazine, eventually becoming Cartoon Editor. Many of Emett's cartoons featured outlandish trains and railway scenes of strange bumbling trains with excessively tall chimneys and silly names. These did not go unnoticed and in 1950 the organisers of the 1951 'Festival of Britain' approached him to create a real-life version of his cartoon 'Far Twittering and Oyster Perch Railway' (later renamed 'The Far Tottering and Oyster Creek Railway'). It soon became one of the main attractions at the Festival, carrying over 2 million people around the Festival park and made his reputation as a maker of mechanical 'Things'. This led to numerous commissions by commercial organisations and local authorities, and the ensuing years saw Emett creating many other machines and artworks that have continued to fascinate onlookers for decades. His larger works, such as Emettland, went on extended tours, ending up in prestigious venues such as the Smithsonian Institution. However, his most recognisable pieces (in many people's eyes) are the crazy inventions or 'thingamabobs' of 'Caractacus Potts' (played by Dick Van Dyke) in the 1968 all-time classic movie 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'. Originally commissioned as a landmark clock, 'A Quiet Afternoon in the Cloud Cuckoo Valley' was destined to adorn a new shopping area in Basildon, England. But by the time the artwork was completed in 1984, those plans had changed. Instead, it was exhibited at several sites in the UK, before being stolen and then later saved from a scrapyard and returned to its original owner. Bonhams subsequently sold 'A Quiet Afternoon in the Cloud Cuckoo Valley' for a six-figure sum to the National Railway Museum in 2019, for more information see: www.bonhams.com/auctions/25705/lot/1'A Quiet Afternoon in the Cloud Cuckoo Valley' is a perfect example of Emett's whimsical imagination, and is in his own words 'the best and biggest of all his mechanical things'.Provenance:Gifted to the vendor's father who worked with Emett. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The idea for Mermaid formed from memories of these early experiences An 81-year-old Gloucester lobsterman posed for the painting, but, imagining the turmoil that might ensue if a neighbor were to pose nude, Rockwell hired a professional model from New York for the mermaid. For the fish, Rockwell purchased a 12-pound pollack from the Berkshire Fish Company. He photographed it and then gave it to John Malumphy, who served it in his restaurant for two days. Donald Moss (American, 1920 - 2010) "The White House" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. In 1791, a prestigious competition was held to design the President's residence in the new capital city of Washington. Many prominent architects, including Thomas Jefferson, submitted their ideas. The honor, and an award of $500, went to Irish-American James Hoban, whose sketch was approved by George Washington. Completed in 1800, the Palladian style Georgian mansion was first referredto as the President's House, then as the Executive Mansion. However, it soon became known as the "White House" because of its white-grey sandstone exterior. During the War of 1812, British troops burned the building, with only the charred exterior walls remaining. Under direction of Hoban, the structure was rebuilt and enlarged. Today the White House is the oldest federal building in the capital. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., the White House remains the official residence of the President of the United States and his family. The home of every President except George Washington, who died before construction was completed, the 132-room mansion stands in the center of 18 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Under guidance of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the White House Historical Association was founded in 1961. Three years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the Committee for the Preservation of the White House. Today, the White House, symbol of the greatness of America, receives over one and a half million visitors every year. Image Size: 13.5 x 15 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 22 in. Unframed. (B05971)
