Follower of John Nost Sartorius 'Palm Flower and foal' - a mare and foal in a wooded landscapeinscribed on an old label verso 'Palm Flower/the property of Sir Sitwell Sitwell 1802', oil on canvas41 x 51cmThe present painting is dated 1802, but this is not the 1802 foal at foot as it was a chestnut filly. As Palmflower tragically had dead twins in 1801, as Sitwell’s only earlier foaling, either the date is wrong or Sitwell decided to have Palmflower represented with Cockfighter at foot, which seems the probable answer, as he was this colour and seems to have had no white on his legs although there is only a sketch of sorts in black and white to vaguely confirm that.In 1802, Cockfighter was still regarded as a champion, although he actually became a very moderate stallion and Palmflower herself left no line behind her.We are grateful to David Oldrey for his kind assistance with the catalogue entry.Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension. The paint layer has a network of age cracks some of which are slightly raised in the lower right quadrant. There is some abrasion to the thinner paint passages. There is extensive, but finely applied, retouching across the surface covering age cracks. The varnish is even, semi-matte and slightly yellowed with a layer of dust across the surface.

Jack Butler Yeats RHA (1871-1957)The Belle of Chinatown (1943)Oil on canvas, 35.5 x 46cm (14 x 18")SignedProvenance: Purchased at the 1943 exhibition by well-known collector Jack Toohey. Sold in these rooms 11th December 1990 Lot 45, thence by descent.Exhibited: 'Later Paintings' Jack B Yeats Exhibition, Victor Waddington Gallery, Dublin Nov 1943, Cat. No. 12;'National Loan Exhibition' Jack B Yeats Exhibition June/July 1945, Cat. No. 126;'From Yeats to Ballagh' Arts Council Exhibition, Lunds Konsthall, Sweden, April-May 1972, Cat. No. 52Literature: 'Jack B Yeats: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings' Hilary Pyle, Vol 11, Cat. No. 582 p535The genesis of this intriguing work is found in sketches of 1904 and 1905. In 1904 Yeats travelled to New York where an exhibition of his work had been organised by John Quinn. Whilst there he was intrigued by the sights of the city, especially its cosmopolitan mix of races and its streetscapes of signs and advertisements. He visited and sketched Chinatown several times. The young girl with the large flowery hat, the "Belle of Chinatown", is found in the pages of one of these New York sketchbooks (83, X180, Yeats Archive, National Gallery of Ireland). He drew a second sketch of the figure a year later when he was staying at Freshford with J. M. Synge. This is inscribed 'Chinatown, New York'. Yeats has elaborated on these earlier drawings a great deal in this painting created forty years later. The child stands in the daylight in front of a darkened side-street. Next to her in the full glare of the light is a stall on which are displayed an array of hats at 5 c each. An old man, the vendor, is seated behind it. The contrast between youth and age is sharply observed with the man's gaze directed at the bizarre sight of a tiny girl wearing the enormous hat. The dramatic changes in light caused partly by the scale of the buildings also fascinated Yeats. On the left hand side numerous marks of yellow and red indicate the colourful signs and banners of Chinatown. The richly textured use of paint conveys the steep perspective of the streetscape while imparting a strange vignette of the city, reconstructed and enriched by Yeats's combination of memory and imagination. A related painting is "The Public Letter Writer", 1953, (Private Collection) which is also based on his memories of New York, highlighting again cosmopolitan life. Dr. Roisin Kennedyi. Hilary Pyle, Jack B. Yeats. A catalogue raisonné of the oil paintings, 1992, II, p.535.

Louis le Brocquy HRHA (1916-2012)A Man is Run Over in Merrion RowWatercolour and pencil, 36 x 44cm (14¼ x 17¼'')Signed, inscribed and dated Nov. (19)'42In 1938, at the age of twenty-two, Louis Le Brocquy, then a capable chemistry student at Trinity College Dublin, came to the realisation that a life dedicated to science was not the path he wanted to pursue. His mind made up, he removed his lab coat in favour of the painter's smock. With no artistic training, Le Brocquy took his education into his own hands and set off on a European tour to examine the great art collections of Venice, Paris, London and Geneva. Fully inspired, he returned to Dublin in the 1940s and set up a studio at 13 Merrion Row.It was here that Le Brocquy began to find himself as a painter. With a strong interest in the human condition and a penchant for illustrating a story, it is no wonder that we are presented with A Man is Run Over in Merrion Row. This rushed and chaotic piece, picked out in pencil and highlighted by watercolour, beautifully captures the drama and the sensationalism of the scene. We can imagine Le Brocquy as the silent onlooker, intent on recording the event as it unfolds on his doorstep. Despite being a member of the community, Le Brocquy does not retell the scene with the concern that would be expected but rather focuses on the morbid fascination that humans hold for tragedy. Jostling to get a better view of the struck man, onlookers leer over the victim as they would an exotic creature. The figure to the upper left gapes in horror in an almost pantomime-like fashion whilst the man carrying the stretcher, his arms elongated under the weight, proudly carries out his part in the play.Such studies of calamity clearly caught Le Brocquy's attention as he revisits roadside misfortune a year later in his sketch A horse falls between the shafts, held down, unharnessed, head covered.Helena Carlyle, September 2019
