Attributed to William McTaggart R.S.A., R.S.W. (Scottish 1835-1910), A Beached Fishing Boat, a Steam Boat in the Distance, signed and dated "W. McTaggart 1868", a watercolour sketch, stamped verso "From The George Gallery, 55 George Street, Edinburgh", framed. 10cm by 17cm. Note: McTaggart was born on the Mull of Kintyre and is known to have returned frequently to that part of the world from his studio in Glasgow and later Edinburgh. See Collection of National Galleries of Scotland, Accession no. D4523, William McTaggart "A Sketch at Tarbert Argyllshire" for a work of similar date. The subject painting could well have been painted in that vicinity.
Rubens Santoro (Italian, 1859-1942), Two Figures by a Brazier, signed lower right, oil sketch on canvas, framed. 41cm by 15.5cm. Note: Santoro was born in southern Italy, the son and brother of painters. After the family moved to Naples he enrolled at the Institute of Fine Arts there. He pursued further studies with Edouardo Dalbone, a painter of genre scenes and views and then went on to specialise in street scenes, genre but, above all, topographical views of Venice which brought him considerable acclaim and success. He exhibited widely in Paris, London, Turin, The Chicago World Fair of 1893, The Venice Biennale and many other places. The subject work is in sharp stylistic contrast to his highly finished Venetian views with their use of bright sunlight and glimmering water.

WATSON JAMES D.: (1928- ) American Molecular Biologist and Geneticist, best known as one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA in 1953. Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, 1962. A good original sketch signed by Watson, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. To the centre of a plain sheet of stationery Watson has penned a small black ink illustration of a double helix DNA molecule with the annotation 'A=T G=C' of the genomic alphabet at the side. Signed (‘Jim Watson’) alongside the sketch. VG

STEWART JAMES: (1908-1997) American Actor, Academy Award winner. A good original black pen and ink sketch drawn and signed by Stewart on an 8vo sheet of his personal printed stationery. n.p., n.d. The actor has penned a head and shoulders image of Harvey, a pooka in the form of a tall, invisible rabbit, who was the best friend of Elwood P. Dowd, portrayed by Stewart, in the comedy drama film Harvey (1950). Signed by Stewart in bold black ink at the base of the sketch, adding 'Harvey' alongside his signature. Together with a brief T.L.S., James Stewart, one page, 8vo, n.p., 20th December 1992, to Franklin. Stewart sends his thanks to his correspondent and wishes him a Merry Christmas. EX, 2
HERGE: (1907-1983) Georges Prosper Remi. Belgian Cartoonist, creator of The Adventures of Tintin. An excellent, charming original black pen and ink sketch drawn, signed and inscribed by Herge on a small oblong 8vo (5.5 x 4) piece, n.p., June 1979. The cartoonist has drawn images of the heads of his most famous characters, Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy (who holds a bone in his mouth). Signed ('Herge') in bold black ink with an inscription in French, making a reference to Tintin, beneath the sketches. The verso of the page bears various blue printed caricatures by Herge, each within frames, indicating that the drawing, signature and inscription may have originally been contained in a book and later neatly trimmed from one of the larger front free endpapers. SCHULZ CHARLES M.: (1922-2000) American Cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Peanuts. A good signed First Day Cover issued to commemorate the traditions of Christmas and featuring a gold coloured replica of a Seasons Greetings US postage stamp, signed (‘Schulz’) by Schulz beneath a good original ink sketch of the head of Snoopy in his hand to a clear area of the cover. Also signed by Mike Peters (1943- ) American Cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Mother Gooseand Grimm. Signed ('Mike Peters') by Peters in bold black ink above a good original ink sketch of the bull terrier Grimm in his hand. Post marked at Nazareth, Missouri, 30th October 1985. VG
AUTOGRAPH ALBUM Barningham (Julia, of Bowdon and Alderley Edge, Cheshire, Compiler) 8vo autograph album (190 x 155mm), approx. 1890-1912, including WINSTON CHURCHILL, ERNEST SHACKLETON AND EDWARD ELGAR; early 20th century soft red morocco, with 'Album' in gilt to upper cover (rubbed), ink and pencil on coloured paper leaves (mainly rectos), a.e.g. Many signatures (NOT the three above mentioned) embellished by autograph sketches, doodles, verse, musical scores, quotations, musings, etc.; among the illustrious Edwardian personalities (dinner guests?) are politicians, musicians, actors/actresses and sportsmen. 'Winton S. Churchill' in clear pencil just below David Lloyd George's autograph of July 24th 1902. Other significant contributors: cricketers Ranjitsinhji, C.B. Fry, F. Stanley Jackson; from theatre Ellen Terry, J. Forbes-Robertson, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Marie Tempest, and Nellie Melba; politicians Violet Bonham Carter, Henry Campbell-Bannerman, Megan Lloyd George; musicians Fritz Kreisler, Joseph Joachim (some German entries), plus many more. Upper hinge split and with backstrip - but not the block - detached from spine. With small souvenir oil sketch of alpine scenery on board and one portrait photograph loosely inserted. As a result, this one is better proportioned, but is "coarser" in its drawing, again indicating the hand of a student. The original spine fold of the sketch book from which it has been removed now appears as a horizontal crease. Boucher's pupils at the time of the creation of this image included David and Fragonard.

MICHAEL DAVITT, Land League founder [1846-1906].Two books from his library, comprising; - George Hope of Fenton Barns. A Sketch of his Life compiled by his Daughter [Miss C. Hope], Edinburgh 1881, signed by her and inscribed on half-title ‘Mr. Davitt, With best wishes for his success in bringing about the destruction of landlordism and the abolition of English rule in Ireland.’ With an original photo of George Hope laid down. In the chapter on Hope’s Irish visit, a passage on p. 293 is marked, probably by Davitt. George Hope was an East Lothian tenant farmer and a life-long campaigner for agricultural reform. He built his holding into a model farm, but in 1875 his landlord refused to renew his lease, and he had no choice but to leave. He died the following year. A fine association copy.-William Allan.
