Walter Goodin (1907 - 1992), Lake Avernus with the Castle of Baie on the mountain top overlooking the lake, town in the distance, figures in the foreground, unsigned mural on board, exhibition labels verso, 48" x 132", unframed. *** This mural was started by Walter in the 1950`s and was his wife Vi`s choice to decorate their living room wall at Turmer Avenue, Bridlington. The painting is a classical scene and draws from the style of Poussin (1593-1665), representing the Roman Campagna and Richard Wilson`s (1714-1782) version of Lake Avernus formed the basis of Walter`s sketch for this painting. Despite appearing to be unfinished, Walter maintained it was complete and had only added the figures in the foreground as an after thought. This mural formed part of the reconstruction of Walter`s studio at the Ferens Gallery Exhibition "Above All, the Sky" ***.
