Scottish Fisherman.- Frain (Robert), After. Rob 'O The Trows, Fisherman, lithograph by Charles Couzens, sheet 575 x 400 mm (22 3/4 x 15 3/4 in), under glass, appears to be laid onto support, creases and repairs, mainly marginal, surface dirt and browning, framed, printed by M. & N. Hanhart, [circa 1842]; together with a mezzotint printed in colours after Sir Henry Raeburn's 'Lt. Col. Bryce McMurdo', 550 x 350 mm (21 3/4 x 13 3/4 in), under glass, framed, published by Arthur Greatorex, [1931] (2)Literature:Beazley, David, Images of Angling. Three Centuries of British Angling Prints, Creel Press, 2010, nos. 215-216⁂ "Rob o' the Trows" was the well known Tweed professional, Rob Kerss (possibly Kerse), who was fisherman to Lieut.-General Sir Thomas Brisbane of Makersta (now Makerstoun) on the River Tweed, above Kelso. He was called 'Rob o' the Trows' after a stretch of the river on the Makerstoun water that was also the name of a small village where he probably lived. He is said to have been well known to everyone who fished the middle Tweed in the early-to-middle 19th century. He was born about 1770 and died age 79 in 1849. Thomas Tod Stoddart recalls him in the autobiographical sketch he wrote for Songs of the Seasons, Kelso, 1881.

A Victorian scrap book album circa 1865, presented from Robert Hindmarsh Grundy (1816-1865), to his niece Lucy Grundy on the occasion of her Birthday, wife to Thomas Leeming Grundy and later second wife to Edwin Landseer Grundy, son of the engraver John Clowes Grundy (1806-1867), godson and named after Sir Edwin Landseer (1803-1873), the album comprising mainly original watercolours and sketches by Edwin Landseer Grundy and Robert Hindmarsh Grundy among other works, verses and autographs, most notably an original hand written poem entitled 'The Ways of Heaven', addressed to Lucy Grundy from the Manchester poet Charles Swain (1801-1874), other notable works include a pencil sketch by William Wardlaw Laing and an untitled sketch depicting Laing playing the violin, a portrait depicting Lord Byron monogrammed R.H.G. and also signed by Lord Byron, a page of autographs including Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), over 100 pages, together with a further book of original sketches by Edwin Landseer Grundy depicting scenes mainly from maritime travel. Condition - embossed and gilt leather bound, gilt edge paper, 24cm x 29cm, lacking spine, most of the pages are still held together, the extra album of sketches has only one board,

The colours, although relatively strong, appear to have faded somewhat over time.Attributed to Samuel Bough: the charcoal surface appears to be in good condition, but may have worn and/or faded slightly over time. There is a small tear approx 6mm long in the top right corner.Beach scene: The paint surface appears clean, with no visible foxing or discolouration. The colours will have faded somewhat over time but remain relatively strong. The Chambers shows a small scuff in the top left corner.Samuel Owen: The paper has darkened somewhat, and shows a discoloured border across the top of the picture. There is glue residue at four points around the border.The Francia drawing shows some darkening to the paper and a degree of smudging a grubbiness. There is an unfinished sketch on the other side of the paper.

Many of the following pages are also loose in the binding. The paper throughout has darkened slightly, and most of the pages showing some minor staining and/or foxing to the edges, with the odd page showing more central staining in small areas. The colours of all the paintings are still clean and bright, but will have inevitably faded somewhat over time.Landscape sketchbook: The cover and flyleaf are detached and the spine is split. Many of the pen and ink sketches are in brown ink directly on to the page, but some (in brown ink and in watercolour) are applied. Some of the applied pieces have become detached. The paper has darkened but shows minimal foxing and/or staining, although some of the front edges are grubby. None of the sketches is titled or described. There are approximately 60 sketches in the book.The remaining two sketchbooks are in reasonable condition but contain very little content.

Sir William Orpen, RA, RWS, RHA (1878 - 1931)"The Roscommon Fusilier," pen and ink sketch (possibly preparatory) depicting a young girl wearing a military coat and sporting a military hat with a hand on hip, sketched on 'Metropolitan School of Art, Kildare Street, Dublin" - paper, signed lower right, mounted and framed. (1)* The 'Roscommon Fusilier' is one of Orpens most recognisable works (published in a Limited Edition of the final work by the Fine Art Society. The sitter was Vera Hone (wife of Joseph Hone).
Sir John Lavery, RA, RHA (1856-1941)"Trooping the Colours," O.O.C., (preparatory sketch) depicting Gentleman on white horse in military attire with flags in hand, approx. 18cms x 25cms (7" x 10") in ornate gilt frame. (1)Provenance: Mr. William Dillon (identified by Mrs. Gwynne, Sir John Lavery's step-daughter), to the present vendor.
A very important gilt Side Chair, by John Trotter, with cartouche shaped back around a padded panel with brass studs above a serpentine padded seat on four cabriole scroll legs. (1)Provenance: From Carton House, by John Trotter, cabinetmaker to George II. Originally from Berwickshire, he ran a flourishing cabinetmaking firm in Frith St., Soho, London, and is recorded in directories and the Royal accounts at No. 43, 1755 - 92. In 1754, Trotter subscribed to Chippendale's Director and in the same year was appointed the Royal Upholsterer.This chair was part of a set supplied to Leinster House in 1759.The chairs are identified in a letter from Lady Caroline Fox to her sister Lady Emily, Countess of Kildare, 21 February 1759 which states: "I saw Mr. Trotter to-day who says the chairs will be ready immediately but begs to know if you will have them gilt now..?" The letter is accompanied by a sketch with measurements (which correspond to the current lot) and is titled 'Mr. Trotter's Chair' (see illustration).The chair was moved to Carton House in 1815 on the sale of Leinster House (by the 3rd Duke of Leinster) to the Dublin Society.
