London Gazette 8 June 1950. D.S.O. London Gazette 9 September 1942: ‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East during the period November 1941 to April 1942.’ The original Recommendation states: ‘Throughout the operations of 7th Armoured Division in November to December 1941, Colonel Hatton was Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General of the 7th Armoured Division and in this capacity was not only responsible for the maintenance, recovery and evacuation for three Armoured Brigades, Support Group and numerous Divisional Troops but also for the considerable number of other formations and units who were from time to time put under the Division. The initial planning and actual administrative execution lay entirely in his hands and in the ups and downs of a prolonged battle owed much to his initiative and determination. Although large enemy Armoured forces at one time cut the communications he never failed to maintain the Division. Always himself moving about the battlefield, coolheaded, unprotected and controlling his services with wireless he kept himself well in the picture and thus his foresight and resource enabled the Division to be maintained in a battle which took them 400 miles in 40 days.’ O.B.E. London Gazette 30 December 1941: ‘In recognition of distinguished services in the Middle East during the period February to July 1941.’ The original Recommendation states: ‘This Officer joined Alexandria Area H.Q., Staff on its formation and became responsible for its organisation from its inception. During the period in which he has served as Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General and Senior Staff Officer at this H.Q., vast problems have had to be dealt with, including the accommodation and evacuation of 120,000 Prisoners of War; the embarkation of 63,000 Officers and men and 10,000 vehicles for Greece; the accommodation and evacuation of 12,500 Officers and men evacuated from Greece, and 12,000 Officers and men from Crete in circumstances of considerable difficulty. His untiring energy and devotion to duty contributed in a large degree to the success of these operations. He has at all times shown himself to be unsparing in his efforts, has displayed marked ability and his services have contributed considerably to the successful solution of many and diverse problems connected with the prosecution of War.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 1 April 1941: ‘For distinguished services in the Middle East during the period August 1939 to November 1940.’ M.I.D. AN ITALIAN CARRARA MARBLE FIGURE GROUP, AFTER THE ANTIQUE CASTOR AND POLLUX, THE SAN ILDEFONSO GROUP inscribed on the reverse CASTRO E APOLUCCIO 67cm high This marble figure group, known as the San Ildefonso Group, is a copy of a 1st century AD Roman group excavated sometime at the beginning of the 17th century. It was first documented in 1623 in the Ludovisi Collection, and subsequently appeared in engraved prints in 1638 by F. Perrier, 1683 by G. Audran, 1704 by P. A. Maffei, and in 1767 by J.J. Winckelmann. Nicolas Poussin produced a sketch of the sculpture around 1630, and another in 1680 was made by Ercole Ferrata. The group was later in the Rome collection of Queen Christina of Sweden, and in 1724 was acquired by Elizabetta Farnese and her husband Philip V of Spain. It resided at the royal palace of San Ildefonso at La Granja through most of the 18th century and early 19th centuries, from which its present name is derived. It is now in the collection of the Museo del Prado, Madrid. Drawing on the tradition of works by Praxiteles, the San Ildefonso Group is a typical work of Late Hellenistic and Roman eclecticism. The attribution of the two models of the group, represented as idealised nude male youths, has been disputed over the centuries but is now accepted as representing the twins Castor and Pollux, or alternatively the Greek mythological figures Orestes and Pylades. Interpreted as a representation of friendship and fidelity, to modern observers there is a homoerotic element to the group that may or may not have been intentional, but follows in the tradition of Praxiteles’ celebration of the idealised male form. From the 17th century onwards, copies were highly prized and could be found in private collections, palaces, gardens, and museums throughout Britain and continental Europe.

Punch satirical magazine pair of original ink on paper cartoons by William. J. Hodgeson (fl 1878-1903), late 19th Century, signed by the artist with his hand-written captions on the mounts, being 1) 'Proverbs / (Piscatorially put) / "'It is an ill wind…” / Particularly when it brings about a serious entanglement / between Charlie's flies and Mandie's pretty hair (Charlie is very short-sighted - so he says)’. “Original for 'Punch'"; size 5 ½ in. x 7 in. (13 ¾ in. x 15 ½ in. with frame); 2) ‘Sad want of Respect / Rude Boy (to Jones who hopes to be taken for a cavalry officer) "Fah! Call that 'ossmanship - / Why it'll be 'ossmanship week afore you've gone a mile’, signed and dated 1897, size 9 ½ in. x 6 ¼ in. (17 ½ in. x 13 ½ in. with frame). Both recently reframed using the original period frame, on the reverse of which is a laminated copy of the back of the cartoon board, on which Hodgeson wrote his original caption prior to the cartoon’s submission to Punch, that on the mount being the final published version. Light foxing. The term ‘cartoon’ to refer to a comic drawing was invented by Punch in 1843, when the Houses of Parliament were to be decorated with murals, and "cartoons" for the murals were displayed for the public; the term "cartoon" at that time being a finished preliminary sketch on a large piece of cardboard, or ‘cartone’ in Italian. Punch appropriated the term to refer to its humorous political cartoons and their popularity led to the term's widespread use.

Attrib. Sir Stanley Spencer (British 1891-1959): A Bustling London Train Station, pen and pencil sketch faintly signed, circa late 1920s, 46cm x 60cmNotes: The composition is filled with Spencer’s characteristic attention to human forms, each figure drawn with individuality and subtle emotion, capturing the energy and movement of a public space. The work's dense, rhythmic crowd scene and architectural grandeur, are reminiscent of his exploration of human interaction in both public and spiritual contexts, particularly during this time period.
