Richard Clague (French/New Orleans, 1816-1878), "Bay Jaune (Fishing Camp on Pilings)", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 16 1/4 in. x 24 1/4 in., period frame. Provenance: Acquired from the artist by Mr. and Mrs. Aristide Hopkins, New Orleans and Biloxi; thence by descent in the family. Note: The delicately placed fishing camp over water that Richard Clague chose to depict in the work offered here is a rare, intriguing composition that remains today enduring and timeless. The low horizon and expanse of sky direct the eye to the structure of the camp, and the viewer is drawn to the red brick chimney in the center of the painting. The attention to detail in the barrel and small figure on the porch of the camp are characteristic of the artist's best work and are contrasted against the vastness of the landscape surrounding them. Clague must have visited the camp several times to sketch and paint the scene; a study of this exact view can be found in one of his sketchbooks now in the collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art. As on many of Clague's drawings, he jotted down the location of the scene, and his notation “Jaune” on the study for this painting reveals the fishing camp was situated on Bay Jaune. Bay Jaune is located just off Lake Pontchartrain near the present city of Slidell, which was not founded until 1882 and would have been a small, rural community during Clague's time. Aristide Hopkins, who acquired this painting from Clague, owned homes in both New Orleans and Biloxi and was known for inviting artists to both locations; Bay Jaune is directly en route between the two cities. Ref.: Toledano, Roulhac. Richard Clague: 1821-1873. New Orleans: New Orleans Museum of Art, 1974.

Lot 614

Clarence Millet (American/Louisiana, 1897-1959), "Italian Houses (Sketch)", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, titled and "Art Association of New Orleans" label with title and artist information en verso, 11 in. x 13 in., framed. Note: Clarence Millet was a founding member of the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans in 1992, and subsequently a charter member of their offshoot, the New Orleans Art League, in 1925. Beyond the French Quarter associations and clubs, Millet also belonged to the New Orleans Art Association and other artist associations throughout the country, resulting in his work being widely exhibited both in solo and group shows nationally. The New Orleans Art Association exhibition label on the back of this painting indicates that Millet was living at 1240 N. Galvez Street at the time of exhibiting this work. This address was the artist's first permanent residence in New Orleans, upon his return from New York in 1925. He set up his studio in the same building as Alexander Drysdale, next to a Chinese laundry in Exchange Alley, later renting space at 628 Toulouse Street in the Governor Claiborne House where Alberta Kinsey had her studio. Millet's atmospheric plein-air brushwork and bright palette perfectly portray New Orleans life in the early to mid-twentieth century, as seen in "Italian Houses" offered here. Many Italians settled in apartments of the French Quarter near Decatur Street in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, an area which for awhile was locally known as "Little Italy", likely this scene captured by Millet here. Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, A.R.A. (1889-1946):Theatre study, coloured chalks, signed with monogram lower right, H 38 x W 24 cm. Provenance: Given personally by the artist to the vendor's grandmother, Majorie Puttick, thence by descent. Note: The vendor's grandmother Marjorie Puttick became friends with C.R.W.Nevinson when they studied together at the St John's Wood Art School between 1907 & 1908, & attended a weekly sketch club under Charles M.Q.Orchardson with fellow students Archibald Barnes & Longstaff. A portrait of Miss Puttick by Orchardson was exhibited at The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in 1910. In his autobiography Paint & Prejudice, Nevinson said of these days: "From Uppingham I went straight to heaven: to St. John's Wood School of Art, where I was to train for the Royal Academy Schools … There were wild dances, student rags as they were called; strange trips with Johnson, an immensely fat man, to the opera... and various excursions with exquisite students, young girls and earnest boys; shouting too much, laughing too often.” During his time at St John’s, Nevinson came across the work of Augustus John & subsequently dropped his objective of going to the Royal Academy which he now viewed as a bulwark of tradition and conventionality, in favour of attending The Slade School of Art where John had been a student.

Lot 630

A Major DiscoveryYeats (William Butler) 1865-1939. A Amall pocket Sketch Book, morocco-backed, 18cms x 10cms (7" x 4"), about 50 pp good quality paper, clearly inscribed inside front cover in the poet's hand, 'W.B. Yeats'. There are a few art college studies, including a nude inside front cover, and about a dozen sketch portraits, mostly head and shoulders, in a broadly Yeatsian style, with the face generally surrounded by fine hatching, but executed more carefully and less fluently than his father's mature work. Two of the sketches are very like his father's friend Louis Purser; another is probably the bespectacled Mrs.Yeats.None of the drawings are individually signed, but there seems to be no reason to doubt that they are the work of W.B. Yeats. It should be remembered that he spent a year at art college in Dublin (1884-5) after leaving High School. Some signed pastels have been exhibited, and there is a watercolour in the National Gallery of Ireland. On the evidence of this sketchbook he could have been a competent artist if he had persevered. The sketchbook includes several passages of writing, undoubtedly in WBY's hand, including what appears to be a draft of a poem at rear headed 'The Field Mouse'. 'The field mouse running yonder has reared up / No pyramid of custom or of laws / to break her heart / No, she is angry sometimes and she loves / The shadow of the wheat sheaves, that is all / The history of her life ..' There are also some aphorisms and phrases, a few postal addresses, a list of names (headed by Alfred Webb, Crooke, Rolleston, Dixon), and a draft of a telegram to Yeats, Berkeley Rd, Regents Park Rd, London. 'Send by return six penny bill stamp with your indorsement [sic] for Cranfield. Was due yesterday.'* To our knowledge this is one of only two surviving W.B. Yeats sketchbooks. It is a significant and fascinating record of Yeats' time as a young student of the arts in Dublin, a time when the world was full of opportunity, and the course of his life had not yet been firmly set.Provenance: The Yeats Family Collection.

Lot 643

Yeats (John Butler). A fine Drawing of Pamela [Colman] Smith, the face sensitively modelled, inscribed and dated February 1901, 35cms x 25cms (14" x 10"), unframed (but very frameable).* A good example of the work at which JBY excelled, a quick sketch completed before any second thoughts could creep in. Pamela Colman Smith, known as 'Pixie', came to London from Jamaica, and became a friend and collaborator of Jack Yeats. She worked with him on 'A Broadsheet' initially, though she withdrew after a time because she found the work of hand-colouring multiple copies too much.Provenance: The Yeats Family Collection.
