Verner's Patent Cavalry Sketching Board Compass, English, c.1900, the wood marked 'VERNER'S PATENT No2971' , and stamped to the rear 'Elliot Bros London' board constructed of light wood with boxwood ends, and all brass fittings with leather strap to rear, with compass and inclanometer, along with a pair of Military Achinson Binoculars dated 1917, in a leather case (2). Exploring the Legacy of Lt-Colonel William Willoughby Cole Verner: A Pioneer in Military Instrumentation Lt-Colonel William Willoughby Cole Verner (1852-1922) left an indelible mark on military history through his service and innovations. Serving on the staff in the Egyptian campaign of 1884-85 and later during the Boer War, Verner retired as a Lt-Colonel in May 1904. However, his contributions extended far beyond the battlefield. Verner's early designs centered around simple pocket compasses, with the Service Pattern models MK III to MK VII emerging between approximately 1895 and 1918. His prismatic service compasses, a development of the Schmalcalder patent design from the early 19th century, maintained their status as the standard service compass of the British Army until the outbreak of World War II. In addition to compasses, Verner crafted the innovative 'Verner's Patent' Cavalry Sketching Board, which added another dimension to his legacy. The Cavalry Sketching Board has a fascinating origin, initially invented by Colonel W. H. Richards, a military surveying instructor at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, around 1880. Verner, briefly a Professor of Topography at Sandhurst, enhanced Richards' creation, patenting his improvements in 1887 and 1891. Eventually, the board became widely known as 'Verner's.' Further refinements by W. J. Bosworth in 1897 ensured its continued use until approximately 1930. Strapped to the arm of a cavalryman on the bridle arm, the Cavalry Sketching Board featured a leather strap with a swivel joint, allowing users to twist the entire board for precise compass alignment. The board incorporated a compass for taking bearings, and the sketching process occurred on a paper roll wound around side rollers. As each sketch was completed, the paper roll could be advanced to provide more paper. The utility of the sketching board extended beyond traditional cavalry use. During World War I, pilots and observers of the Royal Flying Corps adopted the board, employing it to create sketches of enemy positions and trenches. Verner's innovative contributions to military instrumentation, combined with his prolific work as an author, military historian, and chronicler of the Rifle Brigade, solidify his place as a pioneer in the field. The enduring impact of Verner's inventions underscores their significance in the evolution of military tools and tactics.

From the collection of Alan Wightman - Nitty Gritty - unproduced and newly discovered original script for a sketch show by John Sullivan (Only Fools And Horses writer). The script, which runs to 65pp on white paper, was an idea for a sketch show that Sullivan had c1978. All sketches were penned by Sullivan, and include: a serial-type series of sketches featuring James Bond, a musical number 'The Lament Of The Cowboy From Balham,' and various short sketches. Accompanied by a letter from Sullivan to Alan Wightman which reads, in part: 'Dear Alan, Please find enclosed a rather soiled copy of Nitty Gritty.... (it) is merely the working title for the idea I discussed with you. This is a rough draft, a very rough draft, you'll discover how rough when you see that sketch number five hasn't even been finished... I've attempted to link the various sketches and quickies with to a tenuous theme. This was done at the suggestion of the BBC (they like themes!). I'll be interested to hear your views on this script, mainly whether you feel we have the same taste in humour (I think we have). I'm sure that if you and I can work well enough together we shouldn't have too much trouble selling the idea, if not the Beeb then to someone else...' and is signed in blue ink 'John'. Dated 8/10/79. The script represents an interesting time in Sullivan's career - likely written just prior to his first sitcom success Citizen Smith (1977), and harks back to his earlier sketch writing for The Two Ronnies. Alan Wightman never took up Sullivan's offer to work on the script and thus it went unproduced. This script is believed to be the copy in existence. Alan Wightman is a screenwriter, playwright, author and comedy writer who began his career writing material for television entertainment programmes and comedians including: The Two Ronnies, Jimmy Tarbuck, Joe Pasquale, Les Dawson, Freddie Starr, Des O'Connor and many others. FORD MADOX BROWN, PRE-RAPHAELITE PAINTER (1821-1893); a handwritten and signed letter which reads: ‘1 St Edmund’s Terrace, N.W. Jan 5/92. Dear Mrs Brockbank, I have received the poem & have read it with much interest & pleasure; the last line, in particular, is exceedingly fine, &, indeed, gives a new interpretation to the picture which inspired it. I always marked something out of the common in Miss Brockbank, & this bias for literature, of which you speak, does not surprise me. Only I am sorry for the reason you give for not leaving off punctuations. I am just now very hard at work trying to finish off my 11th mural painting for the Town Hall, when I come down to ? it, I hope to be well enough to call. With kind remembrance to Miss and Mrs Brockbank, very truly yours, Ford Madox Brown’. The letter is on watermarked paper and is pasted down from the back blank page within a sleeve. Accompanying the letter is a chalk drawing of a robed figure by repute by Edward Burne-Jones, unsigned, 25 x 13cm, framed and glazed (2). Provenance: Mr Edward Brockbank was a patron of some of the Pre-Raphaelite painters and this may be the husband of Mrs Brockbank to whom Ford Madox Brown has written. The Town Hall murals mentioned in the letter are possibly the set of twelve murals for Manchester Town Hall started in 1879 and completed on the year of Madox Brown’s death in 1893. No 11, mentioned in the letter, is ‘The Opening of the Bridgewater Canal A.D. 1761’.The letter and sketch were purchased by the vendor in the mid-1960s from the Folio Society. The vendor had the sketch framed but has no provenance. The back of the sleeve for the letter has a label for Documents and Autographs Ltd, stock number Doc.2945.

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA, Hungarian/British 1869-1937- The Artist's Children Blowing Bubbles; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'P.A. de László / 1914' (lower left), 38 x 48.5 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Literature: The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no. 13519. Note: The present work depicts two of the artist's sons, Paul Leonardo (1906-1982) and Patrick David de László (1909-1980), playfully blowing bubbles over a bowl on a table on which toys are scattered. The particularly loose and free handling of the paint suggests that the present work is a study for a finished painting, although a completed version of the work is not known. The subject and composition do exhibit some similarities with De László's depiction of his youngest son, John Adolphus (1912-1990), in a later painting of 1918 which shows John peering into a goldfish bowl placed on the table before him (Christie's 10 Dec 2020, lot 69). The sketch-like execution of the present work does, in fact, impart a sense of spontaneity and familiarity which befits the subject, both in the identity of the sitters, and in the nature of their play.
Attributed to the workshop of Bartolomeo Passarotti, Italian 1529-1592- Five male heads; pen and dark brown ink, possibly iron gall ink, on laid paper, indistinctly inscribed '5...', (crossed out, centre left), and with an indistinct chalk sketch of the Madonna and Child enthroned verso, 19.9 x 25.2 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: While perhaps best known for his large oils of butchers' stalls populated with grinning grotesques and rustic figures, Bolognese painter Bartolomeo Passarotti was also a prolific draughtsman, and a keen and astute observer of the human form. The present sheet of head studies, rendered with confident hatchwork and firm, decisive contours, imbuing the profiles with an almost sculptural heft, shows the influence of drawings by an earlier generation of artists. It is particularly reminiscent of ink drawings by the Florentine sculptor and draughtsman Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560), in whose workshop Passarotti is known to have studied. The drawing presented here shows distinct similarities to other known head studies given to Passarotti or to his extensive Bolognese workshop, such as the sketch of two children's heads held in the collection of the Louvre, Paris (INV 8488), the studies of male heads held at the Galleria Estense (no. 1212), the drawing of a female head in profile which appeared at auction at auction in Berlin in 2021 (Bassenge, 03 December 2021, lot 6633, EUR 8,000) and the example which was sold in Brussels that same year (Vanderkindere, 19 January 2021, lot 220, EUR 1,900). The dramatically foreshortened face to the lower central portion of the present drawing exemplifies the artist's interest in forensically exploring the human form from every angle. This approach is clearly visible in Passarotti's many studies of anatomy and sculpture including the sheet showing a male torso at the National Gallery of Art, Washington (2000.124.1.b), or the study of hands now in the Jan Krugier Collection, Monaco (JK 4667).
Robert Thorburn Ross, RSA, Scottish 1816-1876- A seated woman in an interior, carding; oil on panel, signed and dated 'R.T. Ross 1851' (lower right), bears old, indistinctly inscribed label verso, 71.5 x 55 cm. Provenance: with Frost & Reed, Ltd., London; where purchased by S.C. Coulson Esq., 17 December 1959. Private Collection, UK. Note: The present scene, which shows a humble figure carrying out a domestic task in an unadorned interior, is typical of Ross's work. Through a combination of fine, smooth brushstrokes, particularly to the figure's face and hands, with a rougher, more sketch-like rendering of the background, Ross manages to convey a palpable sense of the sitter's presence, imparting his work with a sympathetic, but not sentimental, quality.
Florentine School, 16th century- Study of a standing male nude, viewed from behind; red chalk on laid paper with encircled six-pointed star watermark, with a red chalk sketch of St John the Baptist with a lamb verso, 27 x 12.7 cm. (unframed). Provenance: Formerly the collection of J. Gallagher, Modena, Italy, as by Francesco Morandini; Private Collection, Germany. Note: While the artist of the present study remains unidentified, the sharply observed and sculptural treatment of the figure points to a draughtsman of the Florentine school, who was likely influenced by the muscular nudes of Michelangelo (1475-1564), Baccio Bandinelli (1493-1560) and Francesco Salviati (1443-1478), as well as the refined drawings of Francesco Morandini (1594-1597), to whom the present drawing was formerly attributed.
Théobald Chartran, French 1849-1907- Figure studies, including a lady with a fan, a man in cavalier's costume, and a terrier; pen and black ink on paper, signed 'Chartran' (lower right), stamped with studio stamp (lower right), bears label for 'Bruno et Patrick De BAYSER' attached to the frame verso, 31.5 x 45.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Chartran worked largely in the academic tradition, principally producing portraits and history scenes, no doubt influenced by his studies under Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889). The present sketch provides a fascinating insight into the artist's process, depicting a wide variety of subjects, from a lady wearing what appears to be Spanish dress to a number of figures in top hats, a landscape scene with a rabbit emerging from its warren, and a blackbird which dips its beak tentatively into a glass of wine.
Circle of Edward Stott, ARA, British 1859-1918- Portrait of a young man, bust-length, with a full beard and a broad-brimmed hat; oil on board, bears landscape sketch in oil verso, 26.5 x 21 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present portrait, which shows a young man wearing a large hat and looking directly out at the viewer with a penetrating gaze, strongly recalls the works of Edward Stott, a leading figure of the rural Sussex artist colony at Amberley, who was renowned for his atmospheric and intimate portrayals of rural subjects. Stott trained in the Paris studio of Carolus Duran (1837-1917), and while in France became familiar with the rural realism of Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884), and also became influenced by the works of the Impressionists. Stott brought this approach back to England, saturating his scenes of the Sussex countryside with bold strokes of highly pigmented colour. This bold approach to colour can also be discerned in the present portrait, particularly in the florid skin tone of the subject, which is punctuated with strokes of bright and unmixed red.
John 'Warwick' Smith, OWS, British 1749-1831- The New Road over the Pontine Marshes; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed, dated, and inscribed 'New Road over the Pontine Marshes / JohnSmith / 1803' verso, 23 x 34.5 cm. Provenance: with Martyn Gregory, London, where purchased by the present owner; Private Collection, UK. Exhibited: March 1985, Martyn Gregory, 'Exhibition of Early English Watercolours', catalogue 39, lot 121. Note: 'Warwick' Smith was the son of a gardener to the Gilpin family, and, as a result of this connection, went on to study under the animal painter Sawrey Gilpin (1733-1807). Over the course of his career, Smith became particularly celebrated for his topographical watercolours, depicting views across Britain and Italy, where he travelled under the patronage of George Greville (1746-1816) between 1776-81, leading to the publication of 'Select Views in Italy'. Smith likely revisited the present sweeping marshland view several times over the years. A smaller sketch of a nearly identical scene, showing the Via Appia through the Pontine Marshes flanked by rustic architecture, was recorded in the collection of Sir John Trevelyan, 5th Baronet (subsequently with Abbott and Holder, London). That example was dated 1795. The present picture is a classic and striking example of Smith's work, with an expansive vista illuminated by soft, warm light. A similarly vibrant and warmly lit vista, also depicting the countryside between Naples and Rome, is held in the collection of the Morgan Museum and Library, New York [1984.20].
Attributed to Edward Lear, British 1812-1888- The Pine Forest, Ravenna; watercolour on paper, 15.9 x 25.9 cm. Provenance: with Thos. Agnew & Sons Ltd., London. Private Collection, UK. Note: Lear is known to have painted the pine forest at Ravenna on multiple occasions, producing both sweeping vistas in oil and smaller-scale sketches in watercolour. A watercolour sketch depicting an almost identical view to the drawing presented here, was sold at Bonhams, London, on 23 June 2015 (lot 17).
