ORIGINAL A unique 25.5 x 20.5cm sheet of headed ""8 South Bolton Gardens"" paper ORIGINAL A unique 25.5 x 20.5cm sheet of headed ""8 South Bolton Gardens"" paper, featuring a set of pencil drawings and humorous captions by Charles Chaplin, signed in pencil ""Done by Charl. Chaplin"" across the upper margin and ""Charles"" on the left side. The paper shows sketches of a bridge, the large shoes with baggy pants and tight coat of the chaplinesque ""Tramp"" (""?Me again?!!!!); the face of Chaplin as the ""Tramp"" (""still life""); another sketch of the shoes, the cane, the bowler hat and famous moustache of the ""Tramp"" (""me""), a brush (""Brush?""); three fish-like, intertwined shapes (""?Fish?""); a match and a tunnel. One vertical fold and a horizontal fold, minor yellowing and foxing to paper, unevenness of tone to margins due to previous framing. Chaplin`s signatures remain clear and crisp. The headed paper used by Chaplin belonged to the artist William Orpen (1878-1931). The drawings were made during a visit by Chaplin to the London studio of Orpen in the 1920s. Chaplin possibly first met the Irish-born artist in Paris in 1921 at the time of the sensational trial of Monsieur Landru, of whom Orpen painted a portrait. When Chaplin visited Orpen in London they discussed the case and the filmmaker used the information in making a fictionalized version of the story, which then became the 1947 movie ""Monsieur Verdoux"". The drawing was in Orpen`s studio when he died in 1931 and was valued for probate. It was sold at Christie`s in 1934 with all the other sketches by Chaplin in Orpen`s ownership and was bought by Sir Alec Martin, Christie`s partner. It was subsequently sold to Lady Beatrice Glenavy, who gave it to the Irish poet William Monk Gibbon. He later on gave the item to the vendor.
