*Ethelbert White (1891-1972), `LITTLE BARN SOMMERSET` Signed l.l., inscribed with title and dated 1919 verso, oil on canvas 34.5 x 51cm, and a preparatory sketch, with annotations, 14.5 x 18cm (2). By 1915, Ethelbert White had begun to exhibit at the New English Art Club and was a member of the London Group, a showcase for the avant-garde. Despite his close circle of friends, including Mark Gertler, Charles Ginner, CRW Nevinson and the sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, he was not so concerned with the new theories of Cubism and Vorticism - his vision was based firmly in the English countryside, rooted in a genuine delight in its nature, rustic charm and the simple way of life of country people. White registered as a conscientious objector in the war and in 1916 was sent to work on a farm in Devon. It was here that he sampled the hard life of physical labour amongst the poorest of farm workers, and many of his paintings and woodcuts of the period from 1919 to 1922 depict the rhythm of the landscape, often around farms in the Quantocks.
