Fifth Issue, with ORIGINAL PEN & INK SKETCH BY RACKHAM. 4to; 24 colour plates mounted on card; with an original pen and ink illustration on half title, entitled 'The Hero' and signed at foot by Arthur Rackham; in the original brown pictorial cloth, upper board and spine lettered in gilt, with gilt stamped school crest to upper board and school price label on front pastedown, small bump to spine with minor wear to head, light rubbing to extremities. It is particularly appealing, and rare, to find an original pen and ink sketch (entitled 'The Hero') by Rackham on the half title.
Studio of Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp) The Birth of the Rose: Venus pulling a thorn from her foot, attended by Putti oil on paper, in a tortoiseshell frame 23? x 17? in. (603 x 451 mm.) "Rubens' painting of this subject is in the Armand Hammer Collection, Los Angeles (D. Jaff?, Rubens, Catalogo Completo , Milan, 1989, no. 72). Jaff? notes that Richard Cosway, in his catalogue of his own collection published in 1791, describes a 'Venus taking a thorn out of her foot, with Cupids, whose various appropriate occupations are most happily conceived and expressed. This beautiful sketch was left by Mr Taverner, at his decease, to Athenian Stuart' (D.Jaff?, loc. cit .) which may perhaps be identified with the present work.

(2), The present work is a working drawing for a memorial relief sculpture to the Maharini of Bastar State, commissioned in 1936 by E.S. Hyde, administrator of Bastar. The sculpture was delivered in Jagdalpur, Bastar in 1939.. To be sold together with a sketch of a plinth by the same hand and letters from the sculptor to E.S.Hyde, variously dated between 1936-38.
