SIR ALFRED EAST, R.A., R.I., P.R.B.A., R.P.E. (1849-1913) THE BRIDGE ON THE MILL POND, UPPER SWELL, GLOUCESTERSHIRE signed l.l. Alfred East oil on canvas 42.0 x 57.0cm / 16 1/2 x 22 1/2in Sir Alfred East was one of the foremost painters of landscapes in his day. He studied first at the Glasgow School of Art, then in Paris under Fletcher and Bougereau. He became one of the earliest members of the Society of Painter Etchers in 1883, and was to garner a number of other accolades over the next twenty years. He travelled widely in Japan, France, Spain, Italy and Morocco. His work shows the influence of the Barbizon School, which included Corot, Daubigny and Rousseau. East wrote an instructive text On the art of Landscape Painting, which laid out his principles and techniques. The book also expresses his boundless enthusiasm for the subject: "The air is fresh, the clouds sail past in great columns, and at the end of the road you see your subject!...You carefully draw the outline of your subject, and you feel that the scene is even more beautiful than it appeared the day before..." (1) East, like the French painters of his day, put great stock in observing the same landscape on different occasions and in different conditions. The present work is exemplary in this regard, and is an important work in East's oeuvre as it shows the bridge over the mill pond next to the artist's studio, in Upper Swell near Stow on the Wold. East was keen to keep the location a secret in his lifetime so as to prevent tourist traffic, calling it "Over Swell" (2). The location provided a rich seam from which to draw on in his 1906 manual: illustrations in the book showing it from various perspectives include Elm Trees (p.57) and The Coming Storm (p.67). It is also the same view which East used to demonstrate precisely his rigorous practice of observation, illustrated between pp.90-91. A sketch for another perspective of this view can also be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum (Museum No. E637-1920). Walter Sickert wrote of East's paintings, "...if you take an East, place him in an artistic frame, and give him broad and quiet surroundings in your room: you cannot have a better thing." MUNNINGS ALFRED: (1878-1959) English Painter, remembered for his studies of horses. An excellent book signed and inscribed, being a presentation copy of the hardback edition of Volume III of his autobiography, The Finish, First Edition published by the Museum Press Ltd., London, October 1952. To the preliminary blank Munnings has penned a lengthy inscription, with an original illustration, in full, ‘With much pleasure, & knowing he won’t read it, I inscribe this copy to Ivor Brown (see page 91 of this Book) who was not allowed by his Editor to review Volume II – The Second Burst in the hopes that he might be given the job this time. Anyhow, I trust that he will find near the end, a reference to that review by one Gosling [at this point Munnings has added a pen and ink sketch of a gosling] see page 305. Signed, Alfred Munnings’, also adding the place and date, The Athenaeum, 23rd October 1952, in his hand. To the half title page opposite Munnings has drawn various clouds and a falling shoe above the tip of the earth around the printed illustration at the centre of the page. The artist has again signed the book alongside an original pen and ink illustration of a horse to the title page, the image showing the rampant horse exhaling a large cloud of hot air from its nostrils. Signed by Munnings in dark fountain pen ink, adding the remark ‘After one double sherry’ and the date, 23rd October 1952, in his hand. To the frontispiece appears an image of Munnings sat in a three quarter length pose with his palette and brush in his studio at Castle House with the printed text of a song beneath, beginning ‘In the end, when I shall die, I shall see no summer sky’, the lyrics with various ink annotations in the hand of Munnings. The artist has underlined various lines of text on pages 91 and 305, as indicated in his inscription, and there are also a few pencil annotations by Munnings to pages 254 & 255. Accompanied by an unsigned hardback copy of Volume I of the autobiography, An Artist’s Life, First Edition published by the Museum Press Ltd., London, 1950. Both volumes are bound in the publishers red cloth with a gilt facsimile signature of Munnings to the front board and are accompanied by the illustrated dust jackets. Volume II is not present (perhaps as a result of Munnings’s reference in his inscription). An exceptional signed presentation copy with an interesting association. Some light age wear, otherwise VG, 2 Ivor Brown (1891-1974) British Journalist & Man of Letters, editor of The Observer 1942-48. Brown, in a similar fashion to Munnings’s views on modern art, made no secret of his dislike of modernist poetry. Munnings describes Brown as ‘a sane Englishman if ever there was one’ on page 91 of his third volume of autobiography, The Finish (1952).
