A 19TH CENTURY GLASS PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATE, possibly taken by the Welsh painter and known photographer Calvert Richard Jones (1804-1877). Showing Oystermouth and Mumbles from the sea. The plate 10" x 12". This plate is believed to be the earliest photographic image of Oystermouth known and is very similar to the painting "Oystermouth from The Sea" by James Harris C1860. Calvert Jones and James Harris were friends and this suggests that the photograph was used as a background to the painting as it would be difficult to sketch from the "Cockle Beds". Calvert Jones was also a friend of W.H.Fox- Talbot one of the pioneers of photography, who influenced him to take many photographs in and around Swansea.

We both feel that, though getting on in years, we are glad to know that we still have our friends and to those friends we send our thanks and our very good wishes/ Ernest Shepard; with the envelope, addressed to Peter B. Bromilow Esq. Sight size 11.5 x 8cm.; actual size of image 7.5 x 6cm. approx. Provenance: Three friends (the librarian, actor and doctor referred to in the letter) bought A. A. Milne`s books in paperback as gifts for those who were otherwise unfamiliar with them. Peter Bromilow (1933-1994), an actor who later appeared in The Railway Children (1970) and Camelot (1967) amongst many other films, wrote to Shepard to tell him of the trio`s activities and received this sketch and letter in reply. ++ The drawing with slight handling creases and light staining; the letter with horizontal fold and a few old soft handling creases
