A 19TH CENTURY GLASS PHOTOGRAPHIC PLATE, possibly taken by the Welsh painter and known photographer Calvert Richard Jones (1804-1877). Showing Oystermouth and Mumbles from the sea. The plate 10" x 12". This plate is believed to be the earliest photographic image of Oystermouth known and is very similar to the painting "Oystermouth from The Sea" by James Harris C1860. Calvert Jones and James Harris were friends and this suggests that the photograph was used as a background to the painting as it would be difficult to sketch from the "Cockle Beds". Calvert Jones was also a friend of W.H.Fox- Talbot one of the pioneers of photography, who influenced him to take many photographs in and around Swansea.
