Attributed to Edward William Godwin (1833-1886) Armchair, manufactured by Gillow & Co., circa 1875 mahogany, with red and green 'Griffen' pattern upholstery stamped 'Gillow' on ring turned legs 72cm high, 58cm across. No design for this chair has been identified in the Gillow Sketch Books for chairs, but Godwin is known to have been associated with the firm and certain attributes that feature on this chair show similarities to other examples identified as Godwin designs.
India.- Rennell (James) A Bengal Atlas: containing Maps of the War and Commerce on that side of Hindoostan, second edition, letterpress title and contents leaf, engraved index map, double-page view and 20 maps, all but one double-page, some also folding, the first ten with outline hand-colouring, with a further 3 maps of Hindostan by Rennell on 8 double-page and/or folding engraved sheets bound in at end, all with outline hand-colouring, some with cartouches, additional maps added to list of contents in manuscript, all mounted on stubs, some light spotting and soiling, one or two browned, with some military manuscript maps and other material loosely inserted, modern half red morocco over marbled boards, spine elaborately gilt, folio, 1781.⁂ The 3 additional engraved maps by Rennell bound in are: Map of Bengal, Bahar, Oude and Allahabad, 1786 (2 sheets); General Map of Hindoostan, 1782 (2 sheets); General Map of Hindoostan, 1788 (4 sheets).The loosely-inserted additional material comprises: Sketch of Roads by Maj.F.Abbott, ink & watercolour on tracing paper, c.620 x 275mm.; Sketch of the Bheta-ki-Puttun on the River Beas by Capt. WILLIAM ETTY (1787-1849); a rare group of Sketches, from life, in pencil, ink and colour wash, including a portrait sketch of a woman looking down, drawn on the visiting card of Mrs Barber of Tang Hall; a pen and ink sketch of a female nude drawn on an envelope fragment with date mark for 1845, and various other sketches presumably made at the original Tang Hall where Etty was a visitor, together with a handwritten text of the dedication inscribed on Etty's tomb in the Church of St. Olaves, York, in a double-sided frame. 21 1/2" (54cms) x 18 (46cms) overall. The Earl of Roden on the Grand Tour, 1781Manuscript: A quarto notebook headed: "This small Treatise was written by that much beloved and amiable Nobleman Robert 2nd Earl of Roden while on his traavells in Italy, started, "Urin, April 12, 1781" Pp 1 -66, 359 - 369, rest blank or torn out.Consists mainly of "A small sketch of the lives of most famous Italian, Flemish and French painters," comprising brief biographies of 42 artists from Raphael to Lebrun. The book concludes with "some account of the Origin and causes of Earthquakes, Volcanos & c." and a brief "gasconade" in French denouncing the pretensions of Frederick the Great.Viscount Roden (he succeeded to the earldom in 1797) was then aged twenty-five. He is remembered in Irish history less for his observations on the great artists than for the savage conduct of his troop of dragoons (the "foxhunters") during the rebellion of 1798, including the massacre at the Curragh of Kildare of more than 350 rebels who had surrendered. Early 19th Century Travel JournalManuscript: A manuscript Journal of excursions from England through central Europe (Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy...), describing roads, hotels, towns, countryside, monuments, works of art etc. At the back are calculations of exchange rates, expenses, etc., and a pencil sketch of a coat of arms dated 1590. There are accounts of seven annual journeys through the summers of 1824 to 1827 and 1834 to 1836, the fist being by far the most detailed. The writer has not been identified, approx. 330pp, in sm. 8vo volume in full crimson mor. As a m/ss, w.a.f. (1)

Teaches to guide any Ship or Vessle from one Harbour to another the Chief Instrument of which is the Mariners Compass,," of which a coloured sketch follows. As a m/ss., w.a.f. Most of the volume consists of case studies of navigational problems, copiously illustrated with diagrams. The remainder comprises details of a series of voyages - to Nantes, Bordeaux, Bilbao, Cadiz, Bermuda, Barbados, Charlestown..., some from Tuscar Rock.
Drawings by the Duchess of DevonshireArtist Sketch Book An oblong roy 8vo Artist Sketch Book / Album, bound in cont. hf. crimson morocco. It contains 14 watercolours and pencil sketches, each approx. 24cms x 16cms (9 1/2" x 6 1/4"), some unfinished, of landscapes and buildings in France, made by Lady Elizabeth Foster in 1791.Lady Elizabeth ("Bess") Foster (1757-1824) was the daughter of Frederick Hervey, Earl-Bishop of Derry; the wife (briefly) of John Thomas Foster of Glyde Court, Co. Louth; the intimate friend of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire; and the mistress and eventually wife of the Duke.In 1791 the Duchess became pregnant by her lover the Whig politician Charles grey, and the Duke furiously gave her the options of divorce or exile. She chose the lattr, and Bess loyally accompanied her, as did Lady Bessborough (the Duchess sister) and the Dowager Lady Spencer. They travelled from London to Aix-en-Provence (when these sketches were made), thence to Switzerland and Italy, settling eventually in Naples. Returning to Switzerland in 1793, the Duchess wrote a poem "The Passage of the Mountain of Saint Gothard," which was later published in French and English with twenty illustrations, nineteen of which were by Lady Elizabeth Foster; the work has been described as "one of the finest lithographed books to have been produced in the age of the hand press."An important album of sketches by the companion of one of the most famous women of her age.
