Africa.- St. Helena.- Descriptive Sketch of the Island of St. Helena (A), single sheet, text printed in 5 columns beneath large engraved view of St. Helena by Edward Orme after G.H. Bellassis, verso with text and articles also in 5 columns, clean tear into image, folds and creases, slight staining, 'The Observer', Sunday, October 1st, 1815.⁂ Single sheet newspaper with one side devoted solely to the engraving and accompanying lengthy description of the island's history, geography, climate and economy, and mentioning Napoleon's captivity there. Rare, a similar item is mentioned on RBH in a 1953 Maggs catalogue, though that was a leaf of text accompanying 4 aquatint views and was dated November 1st, 1815, presumably therefore a reprint of this, the original as it appeared in The Observer a month earlier. Another broadside from 1815 under the same title has text in 2 columns and a coloured aquatint view.

The Sketch is dedicated 'To Steve & Barbara - Whilst on the Dark Crystal 1981' the pencil sketch measures approx. 18 x 18cm. The book is printed by Pan Books and published in 1978. Steve Rice whom the sketch was dedicated to has included a photo showing him on set of The Dark Crystal.

BUCKLEY CECIL W.: (1830-1872) British Royal Navy Captain, Victoria Cross winner for his actions on board HMS Miranda in the Crimea on 29th May 1855. Buckley was the first winner of the Victoria Cross to be actually gazetted. A sentimental original pen and ink sketch, unsigned, by Buckley, on an 8vo page, the image depicting the Cemitério dos Ingleses, Gamboa, Rio de Janeiro, with emphasis on a grave flanked by trees. In a neat script to the verso Buckley has penned the inscription, 'Sacred to the memory of Percy Johnson Buckley who departed this life 2nd of April 1850 aged 17'. A unique and affectionate memento. With minor age wear to the folds, only very slightly affecting the text, otherwise VG Buckley refers to the events of his brother's death in a letter of 13th May 1850, in which he states, in part, 'Before 24 hours he fell into a state of delirium… with few lucid intervals and continued until the evening of the 1st April… He lingered until the following morn and then God took him to himself… He was buried the same evening that he died in the English burying ground called the Gamboa… I intend to have a stone with a simple inscription placed on the spot of his earthly resting place.' The Cemitério dos Ingleses, Gamboa, a cemetery in Gamboa, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is also known as the English Cemetery or the British Cemetery Gamboa.

SECOND BOER WAR: A small, interesting selection of manuscript items relating to the Second Boer War comprising an excellent original pen and ink sketch on an 8vo sheet of printed stationery from the Red Lion Hotel in Henley-on-Thames, the image depicting a Boer soldier standing in a full length pose wearing his uniform and with his face masked, a pistol and dagger positioned in his belt and holding a sword in one hand and a flag emblazoned with a skull and cross bones in the other. The words Masked Enemy appear at the base of the sketch along with the signature (initials only) of the unidentified artist and the date, 25th September (n.y.) in his hand. A note, also in his hand, appears at the head of the page, addressed to 'My dear Editor'; Frank Dadd (1851-1929) British Painter & Draughtsman whose subjects included various aspects of the Second Boer War. Brief war date A.L.S., Frank Dadd, one page, 8vo, Blackheath, 15th July 1901, to Frank Downing, sending his autograph in response to his correspondent's request; a partially printed D.S. by the Assistant Provost Marshal at Pretoria, one page, small oblong 8vo, Pretoria, 1st July 1901, being a Pass issued during the Second Boer War to a Miss Malan, authorising her to hand over a parcel to a Mr. Fischer, possibly a Prisoner of War; James Gage Hyde (1872-   ) South African Farmer who had joined the Irish Fusiliers in action at the Battle of Nicholson's Nek on 30th October 1899 and was captured by the Boers and imprisoned at Pretoria alongside Winston S. Churchill. A war date manuscript D.S., J Gage Hyde, being a signed cheque, one page, slim oblong 8vo, Waterval Z.A.R., 30th March 1900 (just over one month after the Relief of Ladysmith). Completed entirely in Hyde's hand, the cheque is drawn on the Ladysmith branch of The Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd and is made payable to A. C. Evans for the sum of £5. Some very light, minor age wear, generally VG, 4

Significantly stained paper with small to large sized foxing spots throughout. Staining particularly apparent in a more pronounced vertical band along right hand side edge. Superficial surface scratch running horizontally across the back through the lady's black cloak standing towards the upper right. General creasing to lower right hand corner. No evidence of cockling. Not examined out of the frame.
