(Edward Lear ephemera)] In 1874 Edward Lear travelled to India at the invitation of the Viceroy Lord Northbrook in order to paint a series of views for him. A letter dated June 1874 from Government House, Calcutta requests that Capt Ambrose Awdry help with letters of introduction etc etc. This he obviously did as there are eight short autograph letters to him each signed in full 'Edward Lear', sent from Bangalore, Conoor, Ootacamund, and Calicut (one with a thumbnail sketch of someone wearing a huge hat). There is also Awdry's copy of Lear's More Nonsense (1872; ??given to him by Lear??); and a Lear watercolour sketch of Aden showing ships, huts, and a camel (the sketch, on paper watermarked Lumsden & Son 1846, has been twice folded). An interesting batch of material on/by Lear, kept together by descendants of Capt Awdry {See illustrations on Plate 1}
