The view of Brisbane dated 1850 is particularly valuable for the topographical information at this early date. The building in the centre is typical of those built about 1827 by the convicts with tiny window frames which were superceded about 1829. Conrad Martens (1801 - 78), landscape watercolourist who studied under Copley Fielding. He sailed with Darwin on the second voyage of the Beagle in 1833, leaving the ship at Valparaiso, and arriving in Sydney in 1835 where he achieved instant success as a landscape artist. GANDHI MAHATMA: (1869-1948) Indian Political and Spiritual Leader during the Indian Independence Movement. A good original black pen and ink drawing of Gandhi in a head and shoulders pose by the artist Louis Ollier, drawn and signed on an 8vo sheet of paper, n.p., n.d. Signed by Gandhi in Hindi with his name alone to a clear area at the base of the drawing. Two very small tears to the left edge and an extremely minor band of very light discoloration at the edges, not affecting the drawing or signature. Together with Mahadev Desai (1892-1942) Indian Independence Activist, the personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi.
