MIQUEL BARCELÓ ARTIGUES (Felanitx, Mallorca, 1957)."Giorgione à Felanitx", 1984.Mixed media on paper.Titled and signed with initials in the lower margin. With Bischofberger gallery label on the back.Size: 24 x 31,5 cm; 44,5 x 54 cm (frame). The 1980s was one of the most important decades in Miquel Barceló's plastic art, as it meant his international recognition. He began with his establishment in Barcelona in 1980, and exhibited in several European cities. He took part in the São Paulo Biennial (1981) and the Documenta in Kassel (1982). In 1986, he showed his work for the first time in the United States (specifically, at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York). Two years earlier he had already exhibited his work for the first time with Bruno Bischofberger, and met and married Cécile Franken. In 1987 he settled in Paris, and the following year he travelled for the first time to Africa, another important geographical reference point in his career. The present work is a sketch for the imposing painting "Giorgione a Felanitx", a large-format canvas (300 x 200 cm) also painted in 1984, which alludes to Giorgione, one of the Mallorcan's most admired painters.A painter and sculptor, Barceló began his training at the School of Arts and Crafts in Palma de Mallorca, where he studied between 1972 and 1973. In 1974 he made his individual debut, at the age of just seventeen, at the Galería Picarol in Mallorca. That same year he moved to Barcelona, where he enrolled at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts, and made his first trip to Paris. In the French capital he discovered the work of Paul Klee, Fautrier, Wols and Dubuffet, as well as "art brut", a style that was to exert an important influence on his first paintings. During these years he reads extensively, and is enriched by works as diverse as the writings of Breton and the surrealists, Lucio Fontana's "White Manifesto" and Arnold Hauser's "Social History of Literature and Art". In 1976 he held his first solo exhibition in a museum: "Cadaverina 15" at the Museum of Mallorca, consisting of a montage of 225 wooden boxes with glass lids, with decomposing organic materials inside. That same year, back in Mallorca, he joined the Taller Lunàtic group and took part in its social, political and cultural protest actions. In 1977 he made a second trip to Paris, and also visited London and Amsterdam. That same year he exhibits for the first time in Barcelona, and meets Javier Mariscal, who becomes one of his best friends in the city. It was also in 1977 that he received his first large-scale painting commission: a mural for the dining room of a hotel in Cala Millor, Mallorca. The following year, at the age of twenty-one, he sold his first works to some collectors and galleries, and finally moved to Barcelona. His international recognition began in the early 1980s. In 1986 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas, and since then his work has been recognised by the most distinguished awards, such as the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts (2003) and the Sorolla Prize of the Hispanic Society of America in New York (2007). Barceló is currently represented in the most important contemporary art museums in the world, such as the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Marugami Hirai in Japan, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the CAPC in Bordeaux, the Carré d'Art in Nimes, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others.

Embossed silver covered wooden lectern. Colonial School. Mexico. 18th century.31 x 33 x 27,5 cm.Made from sheets of embossed silver which totally cover the wooden structure. The piece is outstanding due to the precision of its ornamentation, as despite its profusion, each motif stands out by itself, and the end result is elegant, balanced and finely executed. The back is four-sided and divided into four spaces, in each one of which we find an angel’s head on a background of fallen leaves and scrolls, and a central button which displays the anagram of the Virgin Mary. The platform is straight and on an inclined plane. On the lower part it is decorated with a frieze ornamented with spirals and two angels holding an elliptical cartouche in which the name of the Virgin of Guadalupe is engraved. It rests on four claw and ball feet. It is worth pointing out that this lectern is dedicated to a Virgin Mary, in this case, Our Lady of Guadalupe. As well as the aforementioned anagram of the Virgin Mary, it also depicts two of the symbols of the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mirror and the fountain, which two angels hold in their hands at either side of the lectern. The decoration on the back continues with the four angels motif, and with a central medallion which, in this case, and as a final reference to the Virgin Mary, displays a beautiful embossed scene depicting Saint Luke the Evangelist as a painter. According to the tradition of the devout, he painted Mary’s portrait, which is present in this composition as we can see the easel in the background with a sketch of Our Lady of Guadalupe on it.

World War One, Kaiserliche Marine, Zeppelin LZ 74 - three canvas fragments salvaged from the airship's wreckage, following Second Lieutenant Frederick Sowrey, of 39 Home Defence Squadron, in a Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2C, shooting it down over Great Burstead, Essex, on 24th September, 1916, (3); a 10pp ALS from the Herbert, the salvager, to his sweetheart, signed and dated Thorndon [Essex], 25 Sept. 1916, where he seems to have been stationed with the army at a camp, having returned late from London that evening he heard the "Zepp", he and the camp went out to see it, with 20 search-lights on her "[s]he looked like a silver cigar staling along through the sky. I had my Zeiss glasses on her & could see very plainly." After having been shot, she burst into flames: "In a few seconds the whole [...] was blazing & of course we knew she was doomed. She tipped up & began to descend [...] Finally she fell in a field exactly 4 miles east of us. [...] It was a marvellous, sight, & through glasses one could see the frame workf after the envelope was burned away. The glow remained in the sky [...] half an hour after the Zepp [hit] the ground." The regiment were soon called to the site. "(They want 500 troops to guard a Zepp), & fatigue parties were soon at work cleaning up the mess. The Zepp was 13,000 feet up when hit, so when she fell 2½ miles you may imagine things got a bit crumpled up. All the crew were lying about, some amongst the debris, others a hundred or two yds away. Some were terribly burned, others were not much damaged. [...] That was the really unpleasant part of it all & I need not dwell on it. One man had fallen 50 yards from the Zepp in a grass field flat on his back & had made a very interesting impression in the ground about 6 inches deep. [...] When one falls 2½ miles one must hit the ground fairly hard, the only wonder is that there was anything left to pick up [...]", (1); copies of The Daily Mirror and Daily Sketch newspapers viz. the airship crash, (2), [collection]
WEATHERLEY (CAPTAIN CECIL POULETT)Manuscript notebook of Captain Cecil Poulett Weatherley (1860-1932), of the Vigilant, describing his circumnavigation of Lake Bangweolo, 1896-1899, comprising detailed notes of compass bearings, longitude and latitude and notes on the geographical features, interspersed with later additional commentary on the land and its people, and illustrated with some thirty-five fine pencil and watercolour maps and drawings, including two portraits ('...from a sketch made in the Vigilant 23-9-98...'), describing his route from the Isthmus of Fungé ('...a stretch of extremely white sand...'), via Kawendé Country ('...beautifully wooded with tall Mipundu trees...'), Kirui Island ('...out and away, the best wooded of the islands...'), N'Kanga and Kasanga Marshes ('...High papyrus with water ways for canoes...'), Bemba Chifunawuli ('...discovered by me in 1896...'), Luapula ('...a delightful little river...'), Mumbotuta Falls ('...the sight of the Luapula), Mwyangashé River ('...most disappointing in every way...'), Wengé Hills ('...High walls of red sandstone...'), and Mweru, ending by apologising for gaps in the account as he had mislaid the piece of paper on which he wrote his calculations, with extensive notes on the names of African families and the correct pronunciation of the same, c.315 pages, in ink, dust-staining and marks with some water staining, original ruled vellum boards, faded notes in ink and pencil on front board, worn, binding loose, small 4to (200 x 135mm.), [c.1899]Footnotes:'A THUNDERING CHAOS OF GREAT WAVES, HEAPED UP MASSES OF FOAM AND CLOUDS OF SPRAY': POULETT WEATHERLEY'S NOTES ON THE CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF LAKE BANWEOLO.A distinguished and highly respected traveller, Captain Weatherley presented his paper on the 'Circumnavigation of Lake Banweolo' to the Royal Geographical Society in 1898, and an account of the evening was published in the Geographical Journal (vol. XII), that same year. References in the present notebook to his return to the area in 1899 and an apology for losing his notes, would indicate that it was therefore completed in the early years of the twentieth century. Interspersed between the technical data, Weatherley's commentary adds much local colour and reveals a great understanding of and sympathy for the local people, something for which he was renowned. '...The natives in this part... have a love for names - no puddle, no scrap of mud, no tiny collection of reeds of papyrus is too insignificant... This plethora of names gave me much trouble...', he writes - '...The Wéna Kawendé are undoubtedly the best lot of natives on the coast... Their rightful Chief Kawongo is an extremely nice man in many ways but is unfortunately greatly addicted to the undue consumption of Wengura... or native beer...'. There is much on the practice of tattooing by various tribes - '...The Wéna Kawendé file both upper and lower front teeth into sharp points – they tattoo... a line of dots from below each ear to the shoulder and one down the nape of the neck... dots made by a needle (native, which is about twice as thick as a big darning needle... and charcoal rubbed in...' – with other observations such as the consumption of hemp '...the natives are all nerves and fit for nothing...', and evocative descriptions of the landscape - '...As the Vigilant was pushed through it, myriads of tiny bubbles rose up through the mud and exploded on reaching the surface with a hissing sound, emitting a vile stench...'. His sympathy for the locals does not, however, extend to his European predecessors with critical mention here of fellow-explorers Victor Giraud and Alfred Sharpe (whose findings he found '...perfectly inexplicable...').In 1896 Weatherley visited the site of David Livingstone's memorial at Chitambo and it was as a result of his report on the decayed state of the tree marking the spot that forced the R.G.S. to remove the inscribed portion and erect an obelisk as a more lasting memorial (Desmond Clark, J. David Livingstone Memorial at Chitambo's, online article). After his circumnavigation he spent much time in Africa and was noted hunting lions in the Serengeti with Prince Ladislas Radizwill in 1911. In 1914 he was said to be in German East Africa mapping for the British Government. His illustrated diaries of these journeys, Volume 1 (October 1889 to January 1899) and Volume 2 (June to July 1898 and January to March 1899) are held by the R.G.S. (ref. PWE), probably donated by his friend Leslie Sweet, who provided the steel boat, the Vigilant, which enabled Weatherley to undertake his own journey, and who was present at the R.G.S. presentation in 1898. The present notebook derives from the remains of the private library of Ferdinand Stephen Joelson (1893-1979), the bulk of whose collection was sold in these rooms, 19 January 1995. Joelson was a respected writer, broadcaster and publisher on African affairs, and was founder and, for 42 years, editor of the weekly newspaper East Africa & Rhodesia. His papers are held at the Beinecke Library, Yale University (Gen. Mss 634), Rhodes House Library, Oxford and the Bodleian.
