Ibid) Mary Schoeser in the same text describes Stewart's 1950s textiles as "...drawing from an oeuvre that was consistently humane, dealing with the human form, face and features... Stewart tapped into cultural iconography representative of individuality, risk-taking and idealism that were, on the one hand, particularly Scottish and socialist, and on the other, universally understood." DDS. Joe Tilson, RA (British, b.1928) Clip-o-matic Breast, signed upper left "Joe Tilson 1971" and numbered 16/120, colour screenprint with collage, 70 x 49cm. Joe Tilson initially worked as a carpenter and joiner from 1944 to 1946, before carrying out his National Service in the RAF until 1949. He went on to study at St Martin's School of Art, London from 1949 to 1952 and at the Royal College of Art, London from 1952 to 1955 where he received the Rome Prize, taking him to live in Italy in 1955. He returned to London in 1957, and from 1958 to 1963 he taught at St Martin's School of Art, and subsequently at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, Kings College, Newcastle upon Tyne, The School of Visual Arts, New York and the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Hamburg
Andy Warhol (Amer.1928-1987)-Flowers, 1970, screenprint in colours on wove paper, the full sheet 36 x 36” (91.5cm2), signed in ballpoint pen and stamp numbered verso 82/250, from the portfolio published by Factory Editions, New York Andy Warhol is the artist most associated with Pop Art, and was dubbed by the media the ‘Prince of Pop’. He held his first one-man show in 1952 and was part of an important group exhibition at the museum of Modern Art, New York in 1956. He founded The Factory in 1962 and quickly became a household name due to his mass production of depictions of familiar ‘mass produced’ items.
