λ DAME ELISABETH FRINK (BRITISH 1930-1993)UNTITLED (MAN AND HORSE)Acrylic, charcoal and chalk Signed and dated 90 (lower right) 176 x 120cm (69¼ x 47 in.)Provenance:Beaux Arts, London/Bath Purchased from the above by the present owner Literature:Edward Lucie-Smith, Elisabeth Frink, Sculpture and Drawings Since 1984, Arts Books International, 1994, p. 171, illus.Recorded in the Frink Archive held at the Dorset History Centre under Ref D-FRK/1/1/2/4/16 'The drawing is suffused with magic: it seems as if man and beast are communing in the moonlight, denizens of some mythical realm.' Edward Lucie-Smith, p. 171By 1987 Frink had started to explore large-scale drawings in colour, experimenting with acrylic paint over charcoal producing bold and expressionist works. Using graphic techniques that Frink had explored through her printmaking practice she experimented with pairing back ideas to their simplest forms emphasising large areas of block colour. Frink's drawings were not preparatory sketches for sculpture as she saw exploration through draughtsmanship an important avenue as an artist. The viewer is immediately struck by the scale of this work on paper looming over passers-by. Frink showcases one of her masculine heroes; a nude man is seated directly facing the viewer with his head turned towards a white horse that lies beside him. The present work signifies Frink's move to compositional drawings where she explored combining elements such as man and horse, both subject matter she had explored previously. Man is depicted alongside his companion. The relationship between humanity and nature preoccupied her practice and she explored the interdependence between humans and domestic animals. Her fascination with horses dominated her artistic output throughout her career. In search of peace and serenity away from the pressures of the British art world Frink moved to Camargue in 1966. This isolated living, surrounded by the vast remote lagoons and marshland, was an important exploration of her identity. Camargue is also renowned for the herds of wild horses that graze across the plains. These horses served as great models for Frink who had always been fascinated by these majestic animals. In particular, she was drawn to their form in their most primitive state and drew on illustrations recorded in cave paintings in Lascaux. Large jaw bones, oversized hooves, sturdy shoulders, and large solid heads. A three colour screenprint also from 1990 is recorded as 'Man and Horse' this is a very similar composition but shows the male figure's right leg outstretched with the horses' hoof resting on his knee. This shows Frink's playful experimentation with compositional drawings and prints and is likely to have been in preparation for the final composition that we see here in oil and watercolour across the sheet.
