John Dove & Molly White (British)Bowie (Face No.1), 2010no.58 of 100, signed, titled and numbered on the verso, screenprint on hand-made Rag paper, made from recycled t-shirts, published by Paul Stolper, unframed 76 x 56cm (30 x 22in)Footnotes:The 'Face' prints were first introduced at KITSCH-22, London from 1976−78. The images were about urban tribal make-up and adornment, and celebrated a new kind of face paint of the tribes of London. In '73 the image of Bowie from the Aladdin Sane album was an archetype that 70s Disco fans religiously followed to create their own styles of dress and make-up. The warehouse parties that grew from 1975 created the perfect setting for the new breed of flamboyant Punks and New Romantics who would be inspired by Bowie's unique face painting created by Brian Duffy and Pierre Le Roche. The Disco Kids would adopt that Ziggy schizophrenia and live out their own version of a Ziggy Stardust fashion fantasy in a rush to become someone else for the weekend. Some would stay with Ziggy for the duration. In September 2012 The Paul Stolper Gallery held a mini-retrospective of drawings, collages and prints on paper from John Dove & Molly White. The 'Face' prints were then included in the exhibition TWO-FACED FAME at The Studio 3 Gallery at Kent University in 2013, and in 2015 the Face No.1 T-shirt and prints were chosen for the BOWIE IS exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. John Dove & Molly White (British)Jordan (Face No.3), 2008no.1 of 100, signed, titled and dated on verso, screenprint on hand-made Rag paper, made from recycled t-shirts, published by Paul Stolper, unframed 76 x 56cm (30 x 22in)Footnotes:Jordan worked at Vivienne Westwood's SEX boutique. A 16 year-old rubber-clad real-live punk protagonist from the suburbs, Malcolm (McLaren) referred to her as the first Sex Pistol. Artists Dove and White offered her a 'Face no.3' T-shirt, but she said she'd rather have some money. Very forthright and good humoured, her provincial nonchalance gave her stark appearance a softer edge. She was stripped bare by Johnny Rotten at The El Paradiso club gig, and her part in Derek Jarman's JUBILEE as Amyl Nitrate made her a cult star. She caused such a stir while she travelled from Sussex to Kings Road, British Rail had to put her in a First Class compartment. The Jordon 'Face' print on paper was included in the John Dove and Molly White mini-retrospective FACE TO FACE at the Paul Stolper gallery in 2012, and at the exhibition TWO-FACED FAME at The Studio 3 Gallery at Kent University in 2013. Jordan retired from the Chelsea scene in the 80s to return to Sussex where she breeds Burmese cats. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: † AR† VAT at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

PATRICK CAULFIELD (British 1936–2005) A PRINT, "Pink Jug," 1981-1982, screenprint on paper, signed and numbered 29/80 L/R in pencil. 30" x 23 1/2" Note: Pink Jug was designed by the British artist Patrick Caulfield in London in 1981. As with all of his prints, Caulfield initially composed the work in the form of an acrylic painting. It was printed in 1982 at Kelpra Studio, a fine art print workshop in London, on white, heavy-weight, machine-woven paper using serigraph inks, which may have been oil-based. Colour was applied at a uniform thickness across the composition. It was published within an edition of eighty by Waddington Graphics, London, in 1982, although the edition number of this particular print is not known. The work is float-mounted on museum board using paper hinges and has been framed for display by Tate. The critic Mel Gooding has written that the ‘simple, schematic and direct’ style of Caulfield’s prints from the early 1980s represented a shift from the highly complex compositions in his prints and paintings of the mid-to-late 1970s (such as Still Life Ingredients 1976, Estate of Patrick Caulfield, London; Caulfield and Gooding 1998, p.14). Pink Jug is one of a group of four screenprints made by Caulfield in 1981–2, all of which depict jugs in the same stylized manner From the Tate Collection website Provenance: Estate of David E. The original painting was based on a newspaper photograph of the bust of French film star Anna Karina in her leading role of a film entitled Vivre sa Vi (1962) and was installed in nine panels, stretching 12 feet tall. Provenance: Exhibited in "AN ART HISTORIAN COLLECTS: The David E. Brauer Collection" at the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, Alabama, February 7 - November 29, 2020; Estate of David E. GERALD LAING (British 1936-2011) A PRINT, "Brigitte Bardot," 1968, screenprint on paper, signed in margin in pencil L/R, titled, dated, and numbered L/L 4/200. 21 1/4" x 20 1/2" Note: This screenprint is derived from the eponymous 1963 largely successful painting demonstrating Laing's refinement of technique on a structured ruled grid. The original painting was submitted, and selected, for the 1963 Young Contemporaries Exhibition at RBA Galleries in London. The source for the original work came from the logo on the request for entries for the exhibition - a black and white photograph of Brigitte Bardot on which a black circle had been superimposed. The graphic designer's intention with the invitation was stated as an inference about the type of work that would likely dominate the exhibition - a merging of British pop art and Russian constructivism. Laing accepted the design as "a gift," and was determined "to appropriate it in its entirety." This screenprint, along with the source painting, is the highlight of Laing's portraits of French New Wave film stars. Provenance: Exhibited in "AN ART HISTORIAN COLLECTS: The David E. Brauer Collection" at the Mobile Museum of Art, Mobile, Alabama, February 7 - November 29, 2020; Estate of David E. Brauer, Houston, Texas. RICHARD WILLIAM HAMILTON (British 1922-2011) A PRINT "Portrait of the Artist by Francis Bacon," 1970, collotype and screenprint, signed and numbered in margin in pencil L/R, "R Hamilton 18/140," along with watermark, titled L/L. 23" x 21" Note: In 1969, at the end of a characteristically wine-soaked lunch at Robert Carrier’s London restaurant with the artist Francis Bacon (1909–1992), Hamilton asked Bacon to photograph him against the drapes of the dining room. The first exposure was blurry from Bacon’s tipsy handling of the Polaroid, but Hamilton found the image to have an affinity with Bacon’s distinctive style of painting. Working with oil on collotype copies of that portrait, Hamilton produced seven studies from which Bacon was to select his favorite. He chose the seventh study in which Hamilton had covered the blurred curtains with a, particularly Bacon-esque violet.-Description from the Met Museum Collection Provenance: Exhibited in "AN ART HISTORIAN COLLECTS: The David E.
