1904 Oldsmobile 7hp 'Curved Dash' Runabout Registration no. BF 4661 Chassis no. to be advised•Imported from the USA•Present ownership for approximately 12 years•Frequent London-Brighton finisher•PRG trailer included (buyer to collect)Footnotes:Known as the 'Curved Dash' for obvious reasons, Ransom Eli Olds' gasoline-powered runabout was first offered for sale in 1901, following a fire at the factory that had destroyed every other prototype. Over 11,000 of the three Curved Dash models ('R', '6C' and 'B') were constructed before production ceased in 1907, making it the first volume produced American automobile. The Model 'R' runabout was powered by a single-cylinder, 1.6-litre engine of 114x152mm bore/stroke, mounted horizontally at the rear and producing 4½ horsepower at 600rpm. Later '6C' and 'B' models benefited from a more-powerful (7hp) 1.9-litre engine, and all featured two-speed transmission and chain final drive.Several improvements to the design were made during the course of production but the engine's basic layout remained unchanged. Two mechanically operated overhead valves were set side-by-side at 90 degrees to the cylinder axis, and the rocker arms had roller ends. An ignition contact-breaker was mounted on the end of the camshaft, and sparks provided by a trembler coil. By 1902, the mixer-type carburettor had been replaced by a float-less design, while a manually adjustable valve in the exhaust system vented exhaust gases via the silencer box or more or less straight to the atmosphere, the two settings presumably being intended for town and country use respectively. Cooling water was contained in a reservoir above the engine and circulated by a crankshaft-driven pump, mounted on the side of the chassis. The radiator's copper piping wound its way back and forth beneath the floor.Despite appearances to the contrary, the suspension's leaf-springs which linked the front and rear axles were not true half-elliptics like those fitted to the later model 'B' cars. On the 'R' and '6C' models, only the bottom leaf ran from front to rear, so it would be more accurate to describe these as four quarter-elliptics. Steering was by means of a tiller, a common enough method in the early 1900s, while there was a choice of brakes: one acting on the transmission, the other on the differential. The wheels were un-braked. Finished in the model's traditional black and maroon livery, this particular 'Curved Dash' has belonged to the vendor for approximately 12 years, having been imported from the USA, and while in his care has completed at least six London-Brighton Runs. The owner is 93 years old and only gave up flying his own light aircraft when he reached 80! The owner has worked on the car himself, and it is now fitted with a passenger side-step, a special valve lubricator, a new brass water tank, and an anti-locking device on the brakes when reversing. In addition, the track rods have been serviced and/or replaced. Notable features include a Stepney wheel, some tools, a wicker basket, hood and hood frame, side screens and a windshield (not currently fitted). The car is offered with a VCC dating certificate and comes with its own PRG trailer (buyer to collect). This Lot is available to view at Classic Car Storage near Petersfield, Hampshire (by appointment with the Car Department only) from Monday 24th October to Wednesday 2nd November. It will then be available to view at Bonhams, 101 New Bond Street on Friday 4th November from 10am.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rare WW2 Flt Sgt Chiefy Powell (617 Sqdn) Signed Signature Piece, With Photo, Mounted Professionally and Framed to an overall size of 12 x 7 inches approx. Powell was the NCO Ground Crew Who Buried Guy Gibsons Dog Nigger. Good condition.Signature Flt Sgt George Edward "Chiefy" Powell Famous member of No 617 Sqn, rare signature Did not fly but was the Squadrons "Mr Fix it" Helped Gibson build the Squadron and made things happen Flt Sgt George Edward "Chiefy" Powell Born in Wrexham and named George Edward after two British kings, Powell had joined the Royal Air Force in 1928 and was by trade an administrator, although he'd served as an air gunner with Coastal Command during the early part of the war. The RAF provided Powell with both home and family. He was an organiser with natural talent for overcoming difficulties. He also had a fair knowledge of aerial combat. But he understood little, nothing at all in real terms, about either bomb-bays or bomb release mechanisms. His trade was airframe technician. It has to be admitted this deficiency had not troubled him much until that afternoon but was immediately acknowledged completely, if with irritated impotence. Powell therefore glared at the bomber with malevolence and as he did so, swore silently, lengthily and comprehensively. But 'bloody hell', were the only words he spoke aloud. There was nobody to hear him. Powell stood alone, in sole charge of the bomber, forage cap cocked rakishly over his right eye, clad in battle-dress, the blouse open at the neck. Legs astride, hands hips, he stared at the aeroplane as though willing it to eject the 'egg' hanging below its belly, by the sheer force of his considerable personality. You bastard!' he snarled, investing the expletive with all the venom Flight Sergeants traditionally direct at anything causing them serious problems. The 'egg' was a dummy - a massive cylinder, made of concrete, weighing 10,000 lbs, an enormous lookalike garden roller - the exact size & weight of a new weapon Chiefy Powell's new squadron was being formed to drop on enemy targets, previously impossible to attack with conventional weapons. The only problem, Chiefy Powell ruefully reflected, was that the bloody weapon would not fall out of the bloody aeroplane, which in turn meant that unless he, Chiefy Powell, got it bloody sorted there would be no bloody raid, either. 'And,' he concluded gloomily to himself, wiping the toothbrush of a moustache clinging to his upper lip with the back of his right hand, 'I've no doubt that it will all be my bloody fault.' Chiefy Powell did not know whether the weapon was a bomb, mine, or what. He did know it was secret. VERY secret. So secret that Guy Gibson, already a legendary figure in Bomber Command and one of the RAF's youngest and most successful Wing Commanders, was about to be given the job of training an elite squadron just to drop it - always providing, of course, Chiefy Powell and his happy band of Erks could solve the problem of persuading the bloody weapon to fall out of the bloody aeroplane. But at 16.30 that Saturday afternoon Wg Cdr Gibson was far from Chiefy Powell's thoughts. Powell's concentration was focused on the miscreant weapon. 1958 Adler MR 100 Junior Scooter 98cc. Registration number 120 KH (non transferrable). Frame number 407792. Engine number 407792.The Adler company built it's first vehicle in the 1870s, a tricycle, and their first motorcycles appeared in 1902 finishing in 1910 to concentrate on bicycles, typewriters and motorcars. As with many European manufacturers post WWII production commenced in 1949 with a 98cc two stroke followed by improved 123cc, 147cc, 195cc and 247cc designs. Motorcycle production ceased in favour of office equipment in 1959.The 1958 Roller used a 3 speed foot change gearbox, with an Earles style front suspension using telescopic hydraulic dampers and had electric start only. The body fully enclosed the machine with access panels for the battery and fuel. It was a solidly built machine and better suited to solo use due to its weight.120 KH was sold by kK. Blakey, two stroke specialist of Hull in August 1958 to Harry Thompson of Beverley who used it to commute to work through to 1966 when it was retired from service and remained in his dry garage. In August 2006 our vendor bought it from him and recommissioned it, needing only paint, new batteries, tyres and a repair to the exhaust it was taxed and MOT'd in 2010. Since then it has seen no use but occasionally fired up and ridden on his property. When collected for auction it started with a cloudy ease and has been ridden around our premises.Sold with the V5C, R.F.60, 1964/65/66 tax discs, dating certificate, Dynastart manual and the original Instruction Manual. This scooter certainly draws attention and would make a rare addition to any collection, and is totally original except for the paint and tyres, even the seat has not been restored!
