A Fine Cased Pair Of 40-Bore Flintlock Duelling PistolsBy Joseph Manton, London, No. 4313 For 1807With heavy rebrowned twist octagonal scratch rifled barrels each with silver fore-sight, case-hardened recessed patent breeches each with rectangular platinum-lined maker's stamp, platinum line and platinum-lined touch-hole, border engraved tangs each with large back-sight and finely decorated with a starburst, martial trophies and foliage, signed border engraved flat detented locks each decorated with a starburst behind the rainproof pan and with a musical trophy on the tail, engraved safety-catches, foliate engraved cocks, the steels engraved 'Joseph Manton Patent' and numbered respectively '2028' and '2029', and each with roller bearing on a ramp on the blued steel-spring, figured half-stocks (some old bruising) numbered in ink on the inside of each fore-end and with dark horn fore-end cap and chequered rounded butt, border engraved blued steel mounts decorated with martial trophies and comprising butt-caps and serial numbered trigger-guards, trigger-plates each with pineapple finial, turned rear ramrod-pipes, vacant silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, original horn-tipped ramrods, and much of their original finish (some loss of finish in places): in original lined and fitted mahogany case with some accessories including brass-mounted three-way powder-flask re-covered in burgundy leather, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label (minor damage) for 1805-1810, the exterior with circular vacant brass escutcheon centred on a flush-fitting brass carrying handle 23.8 cm. barrels Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Barons Suffield, Gunton Park, Norfolk and probably included in the house sale conducted by Irelands, 17 September 1980 Sold in these Rooms, Antique Arms and Armour, 6 April 2006, lot 395LiteratureD.H.L. The former served as Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk between 1808 and 1821. The latter represented Yarmouth and Shaftsbury as a Whig MP. In 1819 he declared himself a Liberal at the public meeting held at Norwich to petition for an enquiry into the Peterloo massacre. On succeeding his brother as third baron he supported Liberal measures with much earnestness in the House of Lords. He framed a bill for the better discipline of prisons, the chief clauses of which were adopted in the new law on the subject passed in 1824, and he secured a relaxation of the Game Laws, and the abolition of spring-guns. From 1822 onwards Suffield, persistently, and almost single-handedly, advocated in the House of Lords the total abolition of the slave-trade, and sat on numerous committees of inquiry appointed by the House. He lived mostly on his estates in Norfolk, where he was known as a good landlord and allotted land to his cottagers. His love of athletics made him generally popular, and he established the Norfolk Cricket Club. A Cased Pair Of Highland 22-Bore Flintlock All-Metal Dress Belt Pistols Signed Mac-Leod, Circa 1830With four-stage barrels etched with designs of foliage along the upper surfaces including the flats of the flared octagonal muzzles, the section behind with a Scottish martial trophy above a thistle, the breeches each engraved 'Nemo Me Impune Lacessit', signed border engraved flat locks each engraved with foliage on the tail and with a starburst behind the rainproof pan, blued steel-springs each with roller, foliate engraved locks (one retaining screw replaced), three-quarter stocks each etched with designs of scrolling foliage and thistles, and including the figure of St. Andrew beneath a silver-inlaid panel on the underside, ram's horn butts and fore-ends etched en suite between silver-inlaid diagonal lines, the former each with a silver escutcheon on both sides engraved with the crest and motto of the Campbell family of Craignich and Inverneill, Co. Argyll, on one pistol, and on the other with later unidentified crest and motto on one escutcheon (surrounding etched decoration missing), button triggers and heads of threaded prickers each inlaid with a silver cross, slender belt hooks etched en suite with the stocks, spirally twist ramrod-pipes (one replaced), and slender steel ramrods, the etched decoration retaining some original blueing: in relined and refitted wooden cutlery case with some reproduction accessories, Birmingham proof marks 20.5 cm. barrels Footnotes:The crest and motto probably refers to Sir James Campbell (1763-1819) 10th Chief of the Clan Tearlach and Heritable Usher of the White Rod for Scotland, created 1st Baronet of Inverneill in 1818For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mk. Ia - Road/Race car Transmission: manualMileage:Inspired by the AC Cobra that was effectively the British AC Ace sports car powered by the large American Ford 4.2 litre, V8, the Sunbeam Tiger first saw the light of day in 1964. Based upon the Rootes Group, Sunbeam Alpine, the Tiger - with the Ford power plant slotted into the engine bay, it became what is surely one of motoring's true 'wolf in sheep's clothing'. The tiger had a steering rack as one of the modifications by Shelby. Which made for precise handlingThe present vendor purchased this FIA 260ci race prepared Mk. Ia Tiger in 1998 from Sweden. This Tiger was an original U.K. car and was first registered in the UK on 1st July 1966 where it had one keeper for 16 years, until it was sold and went to Sweden. After much preparation to the car, he initially entered it in the Manx Classic in 1999. After this it was regularly raced in the Anglo-American Challenge series until 2003. During this time, it participated in several hill climb events, including Shelsley Walsh and Prescott Hillclimb, where it won its class. During 2001/2002, the car was completely rebuilt and repainted Mediterranean Blue from its original colour of Artic White. Fresh from its rebuild, it won the 260ci class in the Sunbeam Challenge race in 2002. From 2004 to date, the owner has been successfully racing it in the mildly modified class in the Aston Martin Owners Club Intermarque Championship. Now running a 302ci engine, but retaining rear drum brakes, the car has won its class in the Championship since 2006 to 2013 and has also won the Championship outright, an unprecedented, four times in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011.The present owner made sure the car had an MoT test certificate every year since he purchased it and until it was not necessary as a historic vehicle, which means that it is road legal! It has been displayed at the NEC Classic Car show on the Sunbeam Tiger Club stand and has been to several other club events. The engine is a Ford V8 302ci with Edelbrock RPM kit (the kit consists of matching Camshaft, Cylinder heads & Inlet Manifold). The crankshaft has been Nitrided, it has Keith Black pistons, I-beam con-rods, hydraulic lifters, roller rockers, high volume oil pump and a large volume sump with pick-up system. It is fitted with a Salisbury diff and has a four-speed top loader gearbox with Hurst shifter. The front suspension has a double wishbone with 600lb springs built by Robinson Race Cars, Koni adjustable shock absorbers and an adjustable anti-roll bar. This superb sports car is also fitted with MSD soft touch rev limiter (adjustable using different rated plug-in chips) and MSD shift light (adjustable using different rated plug-in chips) - these are just a few technical details this fabulous and quick road/race has but the full list can be seen in the history file.
