Von größter Bedeutung ist Leibniz' Aufsatz Brevis descriptio Machinae Arithmeticae , die erste gedruckte Beschreibung der ersten Vierspezies-Rechenmaschine. Die Erfindung der auf dem Prinzip der Staffelwalze funktionierenden Maschine für alle 4 Grundrechenarten geht bereits auf das Jahr 1670 zurück, seitdem arbeitete Leibniz zeitlebens an ihrer Verbesserung. Das einzig erhaltene und funktionierende Exemplar befindet sich heute in der Niedersächsischen Landesbibliothek. 'Die wesentlichen Grundlagen der Computertechnik, so die Rechenmaschine - sogar die dyadische -, die Dyadik selbst, der infinitesimale und der logische Kalkül, die Kombinatorik und die Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung (etc.) sind von ihm entdeckt oder entscheidend weiterentwickelt worden' (NDB XIV, 130). Weitere wichtige Beiträge von Leibniz zur Infinitesimalrechnung sind Symbolismus memorabilis calculi algebraici et infinitesimalis (S. 160-165) sowie zur Gravitation Constructio problematis ducendi rectas quae tangunt lineas centrorum gravitatis (S. 170-173), dieser gefolgt von Bernoullis De appropinquationibus .
