His family emigrated to Canada in 1801, where his father set up an import/export business. Following his father's death William opened a general store in partnership with his brother, Alexander, and went on to join the militia during the War of 1812. In 1818 he was appointed a justice of the peace in Perth and was elected to the 8th Parliament of Upper Canada for Carlton in 1820. He represented Carlton and subsequently Lanark until 1836, when he was appointed to the Legislative Council. In 1834 he was involved in organising the first canal connecting the Tay River to the Lower Rideau Lake. His efforts on behalf of the Church of Scotland to have it recognised as one of the two National Churches in the British Empire resulted in the creation of the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Canada. He played a major role in the establishment of Queen's College, later Queen's University, and was its first Chairman of Trustees. In 1841 he was appointed to the Legislative Council of Upper and Lower Canada, and in 1842 was appointed Warden for Johnstown District. In 1844 he was appointed receiver general for the United Canadas and became President of the executive Council in 1846. A Fine And Rare Cased 28-Bore Flintlock D.B. Travelling Pistol With Attachable Shoulder-Stock By Durs Egg, London, Circa 1800With browned twist barrels signed in gold along the rib, gold fore-sight, breeches with gold lines and gold-lined touch-holes, border engraved case-hardened tang decorated with foliage and with a starburst in the sighting groove, signed border engraved case-hardened flat bevelled locks each decorated with foliage at the stepped tail and with palm leaves behind the gold-lined semi-rainproof pan, foliate engraved cocks (one an old replacement), engraved safety-catches also locking the steels, the latter each with roller working on a ramp on the blued steel-spring, highly figured half-stock, rounded butt cut with characteristic chequering and with engraved steel mount for the figured boot-shaped take-down shoulder-stock, the border engraved case-hardened mount decorated with foliage and starbursts, the tang along the top engraved 'Egg Patent Butt' and with blued trigger-shaped sprung catch, border engraved blued steel mounts decorated with martial trophies and foliage, comprising butt-cap, trigger-guard in the French manner and with engraved pineapple-shaped finial, and fore-end cap decorated with a starburst, gold escutcheon engraved with owner's crest and initials, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, original blued steel ramrod with characteristically chequered tip, and retaining much original finish: in original lined and fitted brass-mounted mahogany case (some old moth damage) for a pair of pistols and with accessories comprising unusual brass-mounted two-way powder-flask covered in red leather (minor loss of surface), leather flint wallet, steel bullet mould, extra horn-tipped ramrod, and cleaning rod, the interior of the lid (old damage and repairs) with maker's illustrated trade label, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle, London proof marks 25.2 cm. barrelsFootnotes:ProvenanceMrs. F.C. There are some very minor scratches to the resin body and the gilt-mounts. There are also some areas of minor corrosion to the mounts. The pen is not currently fitted with a cartridge so it is not possible to confirm if it functions properly, though the pen has been used in the past. There are some scuffs to the leather case.
