He specialized in bird-and-flower painting and his works became influential in Japanese Edo period art. He was invited to Japan by a high official in 1731, acquiring many Japanese students after his arrival. His paintings soon became very popular, and after his return to China in 1733 he continued to send paintings back to Japan.
