A 20 BORE SILVER-MOUNTED LONG FLINTLOCK PRESENTATION PISTOL BY H.W. MORTIMER, LONDON, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, BIRMINGHAM SILVER HALLMARKS FOR 1803, MAKER'S MARK OF JOSEPH BUNNEY with three-stage barrel inlaid with a spiralling design of two alternating patterns of foliage over its forward half, a series of celestial motifs enclosing a scroll inscribed 'London, Gunmaker to His Majesty' at the median, an elaborate spray of silver flowers over the full length of the breech, (rubbed), fitted with silver 'spider' foresight, gold-lined vent and much blued finish, stepped bevelled lock inlaid with silver, decorated en suite with the barrel and incorporating the maker's signature on a scroll, fitted with bolt safety-catch, gold-lined pan, and steel spring with roller, figured walnut full stock profusely inlaid with silver wire and chased silver plaques, involving an elaborate design of scrolling tendrils filled with cornucopiae, celestial motifs and pierced trophies-of-music (the inlay with expert restorations), chased full silver mounts comprising spurred pommel with chased spiral cap of characteristic form and engraved with the owner’s name in Arabic, solid side-plate decorated with a Britannia trophy, trigger-guard with pineapple finial and a Britannia trophy on the bow, two engraved ramrod-pipes, and vacant shield-shaped escutcheon (light wear throughout, ramrod replaced), 37.7 cm barrel ProvenanceW. The Morning Herald of 20th August 1784 advertised “For the Inspection of the Curious, just finished, Three Pair of Elegant Pistols, mounted in solid gold value 547£ intended as a present to a foreign Prince”. In 1801-2 he made gold mounted firearms set with diamonds for U.S. Government as presents for Bey of Tunis. The auction of stock by Harvey Walklate Junior in 1816 included ‘2 cases of grand ornamented pistols with their stocks, locks and barrels richly inlaid with gold and silver ornaments’. The Arabic inscription reads ‘S. Hussein’.
AN UNUSUAL 34 BORE FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN BY EZEKIEL BAKER WITH FINE INDIAN BARREL, NO. 1937, CIRCA 1815 with earlier Arabian or Indian barrel formed in five moulded stages, with faceted vase-shaped muzzle, decorated behind with a spiralling design of silver and copper alloy lines, a section filled with hatched panels within diamond frames of copper alloy behind, a further spiral section and octagonal over the breech, the latter inlaid with a gold line and with gold-lined vent added at the time of its incorporation into the gun, struck beneath the breech with private view and proof marks of Ezekiel Baker, engraved tang decorated with flowers and foliage, numbered 1937 and stamped ‘EB', stepped bevelled lock decorated with a flower on the tail, a pair of game birds behind the cock and signed in gold capital letters beneath the pan, fitted with pierced cock, rainproof pan and steel spring with roller, figured walnut full stock, finely chequered ‘pistol’ grip, inlaid with a hound in pursuit of a hare in silver opposite the lock, the butt with raised cheek-piece on the left, steel mounts comprising butt-plate decorated with a hound, trigger-plate with pineapple finial, trigger-guard signed by the maker and decorated with a hound and a game bird, three ramrod-pipes, vacant shield-shaped silver escutcheon and a further silver escutcheon set into the grip, three ramrod-pipes, silver barrel bolt escutcheons, a silver band over the fore-end, and early horn-tipped wooden ramrod, 114.3 cm barrel ProvenanceChristies Arms & Armour Sale, 12th December 1997, Lot 133

Phillips of Bromyard - 8-day mahogany longcase with a painted moon roller dial, c 1790,swans neck pediment with dog tooth moulding, raised carving and brass paterie, break arch hood door beneath flanked by reeded pilasters with brass Corinthian capitals, trunk with a blind fret, reeded quarter columns and long wavy topped door,Plinth with a deep moulding and canted corners raised on a shaped base, painted dial with gesso spandrels, Roman numerals, five minute Arabic's and minute dots, with steel hands, seconds dial and square date aperture, dial pinned to a rack striking movement with an anchor escapement, striking the hours on a cast bell. A clockmaker by the name of John Phillips is recorded as working in Bromyard (Worcs) in the early to mid 18th century, certainly by 1770-90. W. William Tickle of Newcastle - late 18th century 8-day mahogany longcase, with a swans neck pediment and silk backed frets beneath, brass paterie and a ball and eagle finial, break arch hood door flanked by reeded pilasters with brass capitals, long wavy toped trunk door and conforming recessed quarter columns to the trunk, square plinth with applied moulding and skirting, painted moon roller dial with gesso spandrels, Roman numerals and five-minute Arabic's, seconds dial and calendar aperture, steel hands and seconds pointer, gong striking movement with recoil anchor escapement and rack striking on the hour. Alexander Frazer of Comber - late 18th century Irish mahogany 8-day longcase with a painted dial and moon roller to the arch c1790, swans neck pediment with carved paterie and turned finial, break arch hood door with reeded pilasters and wooden capitals, trunk with conforming recessed quarter columns and a wavy topped door, plinth with canted corners raised on bracket feet, painted dial with floral spandrels within a gesso border and birds of paradise to the centre, Roman numerals and five minute Arabic's, minute band and steel hands, with a seconds dial and date aperture, dial pinned via a false plate to a rack striking movement with a reoil anchor escapement. John Smith of Chester - late 18th century mahogany 8-day longcase, brass moon roller dial and three-train movement, with a swans necked pediment, brass paterie and an inlaid oval to the centre, hood door with contrasting banding and scalloped edge, shaped back splats and reeded pilasters with Corinthian capitals, trunk with canted corners, wavy topped door with conforming banding and inlay, square plinth with an applied decorative base, brass dial with scroll spandrels, diagonally engraved dial centre, wide chapter ring with Roman numerals, five minute Arabic's and minute dots, seconds dial, date aperture and steel hands, makers name boldly engraved round the arch of the dial, rack striking movement with a recoil anchor escapement, striking the hours on one bell and the quarters on four. With three brass cased weights, pendulum and key.
