A JOUSTING HELM IN THE ITALIAN LATE 15TH CENTURY FASHION, LATE 19TH/20TH CENTURY of heavy "frog-mouthed" form, comprising crown-plate, front plate and rear plate, all medially-ridged and rigidly secured to one another by large round-headed rivets, the rear plate decorated with a spray of flutes, and the lower edge of the helm flanged outwards at each side, fitted at its front with a long hinged rectangular hasp pierced distally with four square holes, and at its rear with a hinged slightly trapezoidal hasp having a roller at its distal end (lightly patinated overall) Height without hasps 35.0 cm; 13 ½ in Provenance Johannes Count von Moy de Sons, Schloss Anif, sold Sotheby's Amsterdam 17th October 2001, lot 684. The helm is a copy of one in the Hofjagd- und Rustkammer, Vienna, Inv. No. B2, made about 1490 for Gasparo Fracasso, Milanese ambassador to the Court of Innsbruck, and resembles two further examples in the Palazzo Ducale, Venice, Inv. Nos C5 & C6 (see Laking, 1920, figs 472-3; and Boccia & Coeho 1967, pls 145-52)
‡A 10 BORE FLINTLOCK WILDFOWLING GUN BY H.W.MORTIMER, LONDON, GUNMAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, CIRCA 1783-90 with lightly swamped barrel formed in two stages, fitted with silver fore-sight (small losses, previously of 'spider' form), signed in full over the breech, engraved with a band of beadwork, struck with London proof and the barrelsmith's mark, later gold-lined vent, signed stepped bevelled lock engraved with a bouquet on the tail and fitted with roller (later cock, steel refaced in its working life), figured walnut full stock (repairs), with 'take-down' fore-end and grip cut with pineapple chequering, border-engraved brass mounts including solid side-plate decorated with a rococo shell, trigger-guard with a bouquet on the bow and with acorn finial, butt-plate with foliage and a trophy-of-arms on the tang, and four ramrod-pipes (later ramrod) 151.6 cm; 59 3/4 in barrel Provenance Ken Drake 1976 Literature H. Lee Munson, The Mortimer Gunmakers 1753-1923, Rhode Island 1992, pp. 42-3, plate 61. This is apparently the longest recorded gun by any of the Mortimers.
THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN A VERY RARE 60 BORE SEVEN-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK GOOSE RIFLE BY HENRY NOCK, LONDON, GUNMAKER TO HIS MAJESTY, CIRCA 1791-3 with browned twist barrels arranged as six around a central seventh, signed in full on the rib and rifled with seven grooves, fitted with silver fore-sight, engraved breech decorated with foliage and with gold-lined vent, engraved case-hardened breech block variously numbered on the face '2917 and '103', engraved tang decorated with foliage inhabited by waterfowl and incorporating a folding back-sight of two leaves set at right angles, stepped bevelled lock signed within a gold-lined oval, fitted with bolt safety-catch, gold-lined pan, and roller (restorations including later cock screw and gold), figured walnut half-stock (the underside cracked and expertly repaired diagonally from the beneath the lock to the rear ramrod-pipe), chequered grip, engraved blued iron mounts comprising trigger-guard decorated with a hound putting up a brace of birds on the bow and with pineapple finial, butt-plate with a further vignette, rear ramrod-pipe en suite with the trigger-guard, a further browned ramrod-pipe (the metal parts expertly refinished), and later brass-tipped ramrod 51.5 cm; 20 ¼ in barrels A similar rifle by this maker made for H.R.H. the Prince of Wales in April 1793 is in the Royal Collection at Windsor. Colonel Thomas Thornton, perhaps the most flamboyant sportsman and falconer of the 18th century, author of 'A Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England' and 'A Sporting Tour through France' was a notable exponent of Nock's goose rifles. For an account of Nock's seven barrelled naval and also sporting guns see Blackmore 1955, pp. 165-182 The engraving on the mounts is probably by the master engraver William Palmer (1737-1812). His accounts for the years 1791, 1792 and 1793 record 3, 9, and 7 volley guns respectively, decorated by him. See Clancy & Griffin (privately published), p. 18.
A 50 BORE PISTOL BY HILLCOX, WALLSAL, EARLY 19TH CENTURY, WITH EARLIER SCOTTISH BARREL, SECOND QUARTER OF THE 17TH CENTURY with tapering brass three-stage barrel (shortened) divided by raised mouldings, engraved with traditional strapwork enclosing flowerheads over the forward section, two pairs of lines in the median, and further strapwork over the breech (worn), the latter inscribed 'Wallsal' and fitted with early back-sight, iron lined vent, engraved iron tang, signed stepped engraved bevelled lock, fitted with rainproof pan and roller (later cock), figured walnut full stock, and engraved brass mounts including trigger-guard with pointed finial engraved with foliage, a single ramrod-pipe (ramrod missing), and vacant brass escutcheon 23.0 cm; 9 in barrel A pistol with a similarly decorated barrel dated 1627 was formerly in the Renwick Collection, sold Sotheby & Co., 17th July 1972, lot 36. For other related examples see Hayward 1962, plates 55 - 58. Thomas Cox Hill, a bridle cutter, is recorded at Stafford Street, Walsall, in 1818. Another Cox Hill is recorded as a grocer, druggist and iron monger on the High Street at the same date.
