GORDON CHARLES: (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. A.L.S., C G Gordon, two pages, 8vo, Southampton, n.d. (`Friday`), to Mr. Smith. Gordon writes to his correspondent and encloses two letters (no longer present), one from Wilson and one from his cousin Inglow, commenting `When read burn them all & let the subject be buried`. Gordon further continues `I am sorry to say that owing to a mishap I was prevented in saying goodbye to Sir W. Gordon. You know there was Mr. Hozier & his wife & Sir W. wanted me to go with them which I could not do as I had a second class ticket, so I kept away from them thinking Sir W. would come & look for me, he never did, and you may imagine what I felt when I was whisked off without bidding him adieu. It was indeed a painful matter of reflection to me, as you may conceive. These things are no accident however, & they are our trials....The violent exercise has shaken me a good deal. Do not say this to Sir W.` A light band of discoloration affects the upper half of the second page, although the text remains perfectly bold and legible. Otherwise VG
