Dorsi lisci, decorati in oro, titolo e numero dei tomi in caratteri dorati. Segnalibri in seta multicolore. II. Ibidem, 800. Onorati Nicola. Napoli, Stamperia Flautina, 1803-1806.One work in 10 tomes bound in 3 volumes, 8° (169x106 mm). I. 192; 224; 218; 212 pages. 2 plates, one folding table. II. 232; 248; 200 pages. Diagrams in the text. III. 222; 215, [3]; 203, [1] pages. Frontispiece with engraved author's portrait in volume 1. Woocut vignettes on the title-pages. A good set, leaves browned, especially in volume 2. Foxing, some spots, small stains, a few paper flaws. Late 19th-century uniform half-leather binding, executed by Vit'Antonio Grassi (paper ticket on the front pastedown of volume 1).Smooth spines, righly gilt tooled; title and volume numbering lettered in gold. Covers slightly rubbed. The glue employed for binding have damaged, in each volume, the gutter of the first two leaves. The gilt inscription 'Allegretti' at the foot of spines. ADDING: Scelta di notizie interessanti l'agricoltura, la pastorizia, e l'applicazione de' naturali prodotti agli usi degli abitanti del Regno di Napoli, ed alla loro industria. Volume I. [- Volume X.]. Napoli, Angelo Coda (then: Tipografia del Consiglio di Stato; then: Stamperia reale), 1812-1814.One work in 10 tomes bound in 5 volumes, 8° (204x125 mm). I. 192; 192 pages. II. 205, [3], 192 pages. III. 172, [4]; 175, [1] pages. IV. 163, [1]; 192 pages. V. XXI, [1], 173, [1]; 172 pages. Lacking in this cpoy the 6 engraved plates. Leaves browned, foxing throughout, large waterstains, some paper flaws and minor losses to blank outer corners of a few leaves. Contemporary uniform half-leather binding, marbled covers. Smooth spines, gilt tooled, title and volume numbering in gilt lettering. Multicoloured silk bookmarks. Spine rubbed. Second, and significantly enlarged edition of the authoritative agronomic treatise by the Franciscan Nicola Onorati (1754-1822), who adopted the Georgophile name of Columella. The first edition had appeared, in three volumes, in Naples between 1791 and 1795. The work gives a precious analysis of the rural economy in southern Italy. The lot also offers the Scelta di notizie interessanti l'agricoltura, a remarkable collection issued in Naples between 1812 and 1814, and then followed by a second series for the years 1814-1818. Curiously in this set , the title-page of Tomo VI - seemingly lacking at the time of bonding - is replaced with the title-page opening the Tomo XVII of the second series, 'adapting' the tome numbering (the Roman figures X and I have been carefully erased) but bearing however the imprint 'Napoli, 1818. Dalla Tipografia di Gio. Batista Seguin'. I. Fumi, Fonti per la storia dell'agricoltura italiana (1800-1849), 153. II. Ibidem, 800.

In 1792 the pre-eminent astronomers Pierre Méchain (1744-1804) and Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Delambre (1749-1822) were charged with measuring an arc of the meridien from Dunkirk to Barcelona. The results were presented in this ground-breaking publication. "The length of a metre [...] was marked on a platinum bar, and the unit of weight was also constructed of platinum [...] These original bars remained the basic standards until 1875 and are still preserved in Paris" (PMM).The Recueil of 1821, compiled by Jean-Baptiste Biot (1774-1862) and François Arago (1786-1862) on behalf of the French Bureau des Longitudes, contains the extension of the arc to the Balearic Islands, and represents the supplement to the Méchain-Delambre mesaurements. The complete four-volume set rarely appears on the market, and is offered here in a particularly desirable copy in its original wrappers. Contemporary ticket on upper cover of the first 3 volumes of the bookseller and publisher Matteo Margaillan, originally from Briançon (Dauphine), active in Neuchâtel and later in Milan.

(BHM.2, R3; Eimer 923), surface has been lacquered, very fine and very rare *bt. A. H. Baldwin, pre-1980 (with Michael Sharp ticket suggesting Pingo or Yeo as the medallist) Laurence Brown [BHM] catalogues the medal as for the Accession and it has been included in the collection for that reason. Christopher Eimer places it at 1800. Certainly, the style of portrait is hard to date and the present cataloguers are inclined to think it most likely to be in the 1770s. The portrait of the medal in the following lot seems more youthful. Julien Colibert was received as a citizen of Geneva in 1765. He is known to have lived in London sometime after walking out on his family in 1769. All medals by Colibert are very rare and the dating is by no means certain.
