ORANGE JUMPER A Don Pottery pearlware jug, c.1809, printed in brown and decorated in bright colours with figures of a man holding a aloft a hat with a ticket inscribed 'Milton', beneath the spout with a scroll bearing seven lines of verse, restoration to the spout, handle and base, 18.5cm. A pugilist and horse breaker by the name of Mellish, who also went under the name of Orange Jumper, was employed by Lord Milton's father, Earl Fitzwilliam, to do his bidding during the 1807 General Election in Yorkshire. The image by Edward Robert Bartelt (1935-2009) shows a double decker bus constructed out of trees and hedges, with the red London Underground logo for wheels – through the window, smiling passengers in colourful outfits are visible and the bus is surrounded by wildlife including boxing hares and birds, all underneath a yellow sun. Underneath the image, purple text informs the reader that Green Rover tickets can be used on 200 country bus routes in London’s countryside, and are valid for a day, alongside details of when and where to purchase tickets. Produced from 1965-1979, Concorde was a British-French turbojet powered supersonic passenger airliner that operated transatlantic flights by Air France and British Airways (BA) from 1976-2003 capable of flying at a maximum speed over twice the speed of sound (taking less than 3.5 hours to fly the London to New York route but costing over 30 times more than a regular plane ticket) that earned it the BA advertising slogan Arrive Before You Leave; British Airways retired its Concorde fleet in 2003, having made nearly 50,000 flights and flying over 2.5m passengers. The image is framed in yellow – below, text gives information on the Rover tickets. The first 100 applicants to send a list of all 26 London sights showed in the image to the Publicity Officer would receive a free copy of ‘Visitor’s London’.
