Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Penny, 1.10g, hammer cross type, Derby, Leofwine, crowned bust right with sceptre, +EARDPARD RE, rev. +LIOFPINE ON DIRIII, short cross voided, each limb terminating in an incurved segment of a circle, (N.828; S.1182), the legends soft in areas, pleasantly toned, good surfaces, and a pleasing bust, very fine This piece was originally attributed to the mint of Dereham, Norfolk by the Duke of Argyll. Although this mint has since been discredited, the coin does display several anomalous factors, i.e. blundered regnal title, hand-etched cross ends, crude reverse legend, and, of course, the mint signature DIRIII. The cataloguer felt it necessary to discount Dernt/Dyr as a possible attribution as the mint signature could be read as DIRYN under magnification, the type would correspond with known specimens, and a Leofwine struck both at Norwich and Thetford mints during this type. In addition, there is a small pellet in the left cross terminal as seen in this type at Norwich. Die duplicates do, however, exist with the mint signature clearly reading DIRBI and are thus given to Derby.provenance:N.D.Campbell, 15th Duke of Argyll, collection purchased by Spink 1949(with Argyll's ticket)G.C.Drabble, Glendining, 4-6 July 1939, lotSubject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. Slavery printed ticket dated February 18th 1792 informing the public ‘...that a Petition to Parliament for the abolition of the Slave Trade is ready to be signed at the House of....in... by every person who wishes to express his Abhorrence of a Trade so directly Violating the Common Rights of mankind^ and so repugnant to the clearest Dictates of Religions^ Justice and Humanity’. On a slip of paper approx 14x8cms^ framed and glazed. Ticket has a few creases but is clear and legible throughout. Rare. We have not been able to trace another example in reference sources. Whoever issued this ticket is not clear. It was obviously intended to be used once a place and a town had been decided upon^ suggesting that this was part of a national campaign. The date is also somewhat early as Slavery was not finally abolished throughout the British Empire for another 30 years.
Important Telegram that ended the Great War 1918 – fine collection of letters papers and other ephemera relating to Naval Signalman William Wheatley and including an original Naval Signal announcing the Armistice on November 11th 1918. The collection also contains a number of letters some extensive to Wheatley while on active service a collection of original snapshots taken by him mostly at Basra in the Middle East together with various items of ephemera including a leave ticket an identity pass etc. Original signals conveying the Armistice message are now becoming increasingly uncommon on the market. The present example is Wheatley’s top copy written by him in pencil on a pre printed form. It was sent from the CinC in Bombay to his naval unit based in Basra. The letters are also of interest. There are several from his sweetheart describing day to day conditions at home as well as letters from members of his family – one of whom appears to have succumbed to Spanish Flu in 1918. There is also an extensive letter from a friend who describes the reactions of people at whom on receiving the news of the Armistice.

The ‘White’ championship was invented by promoters due to the popularity of the black heavyweight champion Jack Johnson.Smith won this particular contest^ but lost to Carpentier later in the year. This fight was the highlight of Smith’s fighting career. He later became a noted referee and died^ aged 87 in 1974.
