Large Spanish Pyrite Cube on MatrixA large and finely-formed cube of La Rioja pyrite on matrix, from the classic Spanish locality. 1.2 kg, 13 cm overall, 4 cm cube edge. (4 1/4 overall, 1 1/2 cube edge"). Ex Douglas Rose collection; ex Gregory Bottley and Lloyd (with ticket); from Navajun, La Rioja, Spain. The mineral pyrite, or iron pyrite, is an iron sulfide with the formula FeS2. This mineral`s metallic luster and pale brass-yellow hue have earned it the nickname `Fool`s Gold` because of its resemblance to that metal. The name pyrite is derived from the Greek of fire or in fire. In ancient Roman times, this name was applied to several types of stone that would create sparks when struck against steel; Pliny the Elder described one of them as being brassy, almost certainly a reference to what we now call pyrite.Very fine condition. Cube nearly flawless.Starting Price: £150
Exceptionally Fine Sikhote-Alin Iron MeteroriteA coarse octahedrite class IIB iron meteorite from a witnessed fall in the former USSR, showing exceptional ablation forms and surface preservation. 237 grams, 80 mm. (3 1/2"). Ex Douglas Rose collection; ex David Baker collection (with ticket and receipt). Sikhote-Alin is an iron meteorite that fell on February, 13, 1947 on the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in eastern Siberia. Though large iron meteorite falls had been witnessed previously and fragments recovered, never before in recorded history had a fall of this magnitude been observed. An estimated 70 tonnes of material survived the fiery passage through the atmosphere and reached the Earth. The strewn field for this meteorite covered an elliptical area of about 1.3 km2 (0.50 sq mi). Some of the fragments made impact craters, the largest of which was about 26 m (85 ft) across and 6 m (20 ft) deep.[7] Fragments of the meteorite were also driven into the surrounding trees. The Soviet Union issued a stamp for the 10th anniversary of the Sikhote-Alin meteorite shower and this reproduces a painting by P. J. Medvedev, a Soviet artist who witnessed the fall: he was sitting in his window starting a sketch when the fireball appeared, so he immediately began drawing what he sawUnusually fine condition and form.Starting Price: £200
