1892 Original Boxing Press overprinted Ticket for the Heavyweight fight between John L Sullivan and Jas J Corbett held on 7th September. The famed 1892 bout between 10-year reigning heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan and James "Gentleman Jim" Corbett was more than just a meeting for the title, it was a spectacle that would change the course of boxing history in the United States. The showdown signalled the end of the bare-knuckle era and marked the introduction of Queensbury rules, which required heavyweight fighters to wear gloves. The younger Corbett, outweighed by 34 pounds entering the showdown, would eventually knock out the grizzled Sullivan in the 21st round at the Olympic Club in New Orleans. This original 3x4 ¼-inch ticket from the bout features a stamp on the reverse side that reads Press in Red and this is also overprinted on the front. The hype surrounding the fight is fortified by information found on the front of the ticket. Tickets for the bout were $15, a hefty price tag in the 1800s. The purse for the bout, according to the ticket, was $25,000. "JOHN L. SULLIVAN and JAS. J. CORBETT" appears across the top of the ticket, which boasts the title "GRAND GLOVE CONTEST FOR THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD AT THE OLYMPIC CLUB." Below the title. Good Condition. All signed pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £3.99, EU from £5.99, Rest of World from £7.99.
