A 19th century agate casket with jewelled silver gilt mounts and accompanying agate caddy spoon, unmarked, probably London, circa 1835, rectangular with a domed cover, the cagework mounts chased with scroll foliage and set with turquoises and coloured gemstones, enclosing panels of honey agate with mossy inclusions, 12cm (4 3/4in) high, 13.3cm (5 1/8in) wide; the banded greyish agate spoon with a shaped handle, 13cm (5 1/8in) long Provenance: The Duke of Hamilton, K.T., sale, Hamilton Palace Collection, first portion, Christie's, 17/20 June 1882, lot 2033, described as: AN OBLONG CASKET, formed of slabs of moss agate, with chased silver-gilt mounting, set with coloured stones - 5 in. by 3 1/2 in., 5 in. high; and an agate spoon The lot purchased by the Hon. William Massey-Mainwaring, an Irish collector, who lent many of his objects of art to the Victoria & Albert and Bethnal Green Museums, for £220 10/-. The lot is accompanied by a visiting card envelope inscribed: Hamilton Palace Label of Agate Casket and containing its printed Hamilton Palace sale lot ticket numbered: 2033.The sale, by the 12th Duke of Hamilton (1845-95), in 1882, of his family collections, was one of the great auctions of the nineteenth century. As an article in the Spectator (24th June 1882) described, it had caused unprecedented interest and curiosity among the general public as well as rich connoisseurs. For generation after generation the owners of Hamilton Palace have filled it with fine furniture, and rare china, and scarce articles in unprocurable stone …. Until it has become a grand museum of all rare and costly things. … Hardly any house except Windsor Castle so full of treasures has escaped the desolator so long. Now, therefore, that the financial muddling of the head of the house - for … it is financial muddling rather than the usual mad wastefulness which has partly crippled the Duke - has brought the long collected treasures of Hamilton Palace to that Clearing-house of the millionaires, Christie and Manson’s, the great buyers are all agog.

Surveying.- Leigh (Valentine) The Moste Profitable and commendable science, of Surveying of Landes, Tenementes, and Hereditamentes, first edition, variant issue, largely printed in black letter, small woodcut device on title, woodcut diagrams and initials, blank leaf A4 present, 2 folding tables in Latin conjoined to form one, ?lacking the folding table for measuring land (2 conjoined sheets), two lower corners defective but with no loss of text, early 20th century calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, small ticket of Myers & Co., [STC 15416a; Fussell I, p.7], small 4to, Imprinted at London for Miles Jennings, 1577.⁂ Scarce. ESTC locates 5 copies (including this one) in the UK and 2 in America. The other issue of this date has Andrew Maunsell in the imprint (see previous lot). ESTC calls for 3 folding tables in the Maunsell printing and only one in this one, but this would appear to be an error. The few auction records generally mention 2 folding tables but this is presumably because both are formed of 2 conjoined sheets.Provenance: John Bradshawe (contemporary signature on title).Rothamsted acquisition date 1918.

It was unfortunate that either the instability of his purpose or his business incapacity prevented him making a success of farming, but his failure, similar to that of so many great writers on farming, left his 'writings which were long the handbook of the English country gentleman.'" (Fussell). Provenance: Henry Huth (book ticket).Rothamsted acquisition date 1920.

Football Launch of the HMS Liverpool ticket 1980 signed by Liverpool legends Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Phil Neal and Terry McDermott. William Shankly, OBE (2 September 1913 - 29 September 1981) was a Scottish football player and manager, who is best known for his time as manager of Liverpool. Shankly took charge of Liverpool when they were in the Second Division and rebuilt the team into a major force in English and European football. He led Liverpool to the Second Division Championship to gain promotion to the top-flight First Division in 1962, before going on to win three First Division Championships, two FA Cups, four Charity Shields and one UEFA Cup. Shankly announced his surprise retirement from football a few weeks after Liverpool had won the 1974 FA Cup Final, having managed the club for 15 years, and was succeeded by his long-time assistant Bob Paisley. He led the Liverpool team out for the last time at Wembley for the 1974 FA Charity Shield. He died seven years later, aged 68. Robert Paisley OBE (23 January 1919 - 14 February 1996) was an English footballer and manager who spent almost fifty years with Liverpool as a wing half, physiotherapist, coach and manager. In 1996, he joined the Leeds United youth academy. He made his debut for the first team in 2002 aged only 16 and gained prominence as the youngest player to score in the Premier League. While at Leeds United, he spent time on loan at Swindon Town to gain experience as a first-team player. Following his move to Newcastle United, he was loaned to Aston Villa for a season. 8° (150x93 mm). [8], 249 [i.e. 251], [1] leaves. Italic and roman type. Title-page within woodcut border including Sessa printer's device; the same device repeated on fol. II4r. Marbled covers, spine with four raised bands, compartments decorated in gold, gilt title on lettering-piece. Paper label with old shelfmark pasted on the spine and front pastedown. Rare edition of the translation into Italian vernacular of the celebrated Tresor, an encyclopaedic treatise divided into three books, and written originally in French by the well-known Florentine scholar, lawyer and politician Brunetto Latini, whom Dante mentions in his Commedia, placing him in Hell. The work covers a great variety of topics, and is relied on the medieval Speculum Maius by Vincent de Beauvais. The first edition of the Tesoro was issued in Treviso in 1474.
