RANGERS F.C., MEMBER'S TICKET, 1896/97 gilt tooled Morocco boards, interior named for Mr. Jas. MacIntyre 511 New Keppochhill Rd.Note on James MacIntyre of 511 New Keppochhill Rd., as per Old Glasgow Pubs (online resource - https://oldglasgowpubs.com/tag/new-keppochhill-road), 511 New Keppochhill Road, Glasgow.'In the early part of the 1870s Mr David Henderson wine and spirit merchant was landlord of this public house, although under a different name the pub was a thriving business. Mr Henderson also owned another pub on Clyde Street, Port Dundas. When he passed away his wife took over the business around 1880. By this time she was living a few door down from the pub on New Keppochhill Road as it was then called. In 1892 the licensee was James McIntyre who formerly traded from Stockwell Street for years, he continued serving the locals here until the turn of the new century. Mr Maltman then took over the pub, however in 1916 his wife Mariann became licensee, this may had been due to the fact that he went to fight for his country during the First World War. Marian was still in the pub after the war.'
Titanic.- Mudd (Thomas Cupper, one of the youngest victims of the sinking of the Titanic, 1895-1912) Autograph Letter signed on board RMS Titanic to his mother, bifolium, 4pp., "On Board R.M.S. Titanic" headed paper with red White Star Line burgee, 200 x 250mm., April 11th 1912, "Dear Mother & all at home. I am now taking the opportunity of sending you a few lines about how we started from Southhampton [sic]...We have been having very rough weather but the ship is so steady you would hardly know it was moving, was it not for the throbbing of the engines. We are now nearing Queenstown. The ship is like a magnificent palace. The lounge & dining hall are very beautiful. We are having excellent food. I have made friends with a young English gentleman and he is very nice indeed. The beds are very nice also with plenty of covering to keep warm also they have spring mattresses...Excuse writing as the ship is rolling a good bit. Now I must close. With love to all. I remain, your loving son Tom", photographic postcard of Thomas Mudd with embossed studio stamp of Maddison & Hind of St. Ives & Huntingdon to lower corner, ink manuscript note "Thomas Mudd (Tom) of Huntingfield and Halesworth Suffolk" to verso, letter and photograph presented together within one mount with verso of each partially exposed (letter with some words to p.2 & 3 hidden beneath the mount), both held with archival polyester clear corner tabs, letter with old folds with minor splitting to extremities, some signs of toning to edges, handling creases to both letter and photograph, a few scuffs and nicks to photograph, unexamined out of frame, modern box frame, 505 x 385mm. *** A rare and remarkable letter, seemingly unpublished, serving as a lasting testament to the most famous maritime disaster in recorded history. One of thirteen children, Thomas Cupper Mudd was born in Suffolk to Thomas and Elizabeth Coe Mudd of Huntingfield. Two of Thomas' older brothers had already emigrated to America by 1912. His brother James was the first to leave, sometime in 1907, settling in Radnor, Pennsylvania where he worked as a gardener, his brother George following in 1911. Thomas, working as a bookkeeper, booked a second-class ticket aboard the maiden voyage of the Titanic for £10, 10s (ticket number S.O./P.P. 3), which set sail on 10th April 1912. He wrote this letter to his mother while onboard a day later from Queenstown, Ireland, the last port of call before the ship's fateful collision in the final hour of 14th April. Thomas Mudd perished in the sinking, and his body, if recovered, was never identified. At only 16, he was one of the youngest victims of the Titanic disaster.

[Brontë (Charlotte)], "Currer Bell". Villette, 3 vol., first edition, vol. 1 lacking publisher's catalogue at end, presentation inscription from Brontë to William Makepeace Thackeray "W. M. Thackeray Esq. from the Author" to preserved front free endpaper in vol. 1, dated Jan. 29th but year partially trimmed, ink gift inscription "Miss J Mathews from R Ferguson, Oct 3 1877" beneath in a different hand, vol. 1 with unidentified heraldic ink-stamp to front free endpaper, Thackeray's small embossed stamp to head of titles, vol. 3 title and following 2 ff. loose, occasional light soiling, spotting to endpapers and very occasionally elsewhere, 19th century half calf over marbled boards, by Geo. Coward of Carlisle with his ticket to pastedowns, spines gilt and with red morocco labels, some wear to extremities, lightly rubbed, [Smith 6 pp.138-142], 8vo, Smith, Elder & Co., 1853. *** A remarkable presentation copy linking two of the great figures of 19th century English literature. Brontë is known to have held Thackeray in high esteem, dedicating the second edition of Jane Eyre to him, after much admiring his recently released Vanity Fair (1848): "I see in him an intellect profounder and more unique than his contemporaries have yet recognised; because I regard him as the first social regenerator of the day". The two first met at a dinner party given by publisher George Smith in late 1849, the meeting reputedly stilted by Brontë’s shyness. Another dinner party, held by Thackeray in Brontë's honour in June 1850, appears to have been no more successful, with Brontë perceived as serious and in outmoded dress by her fellow guests. Despite moments of awkwardness, the important literary relationship between Brontë and Thackeray evidently stemmed from a deep mutual appreciation.Villette was Brontë’s last novel to be published in her lifetime. Thackeray posthumously published her fragment ‘Emma’ in his Cornhill Magazine (April 1860), accompanied by a personal tribute: "An impetuous honestly seemed to me to characterise the woman...Hundreds of those who, like myself, recognised and admired that master-work of a great genius, will look with a mournful interest and regard and curiosity upon this, the last fragmentary sketch from the noble hand which wrote Jane Eyre".
