Mainly relating to money worries, "but in the mean time I may literally want the necessaries of life…", her literary works, "Should it not be agreeable to you to take it [Dialogues of Rural Walks] on the terms I mentioned, I am persuaded you will observe the necessary secrecy, & return it to me as early as you can…"; the ongoing legal wrangling over her late husband's estate, "Today I had a Letter from Lord Egremont, who has been so good as once more to apply to the trustees on my behalf; but he gives me no hopes of our receiving one shilling of my childrens property and I now entirely despair of any subsistence for them"; she reports having received a letter from Mr. Hayley, "highly approving of 'The Young Philosopher' - I had only a moments notice where to send the MS." and a signed receipt by the same, 1798. With 4 ms. documents listing works by the same: Celestina, Elegiac Sonnets and other Poems, and The Young Philosopher, tabling numbers of copies taken by various booksellers. Smith, Joshua Hett. ALS, on address panel "To The Unknown Author of the Eulogium on the Narrator of the Causes which led to the death of Major Andre", February 6th 1809. 4pp. He claims that the "emolument" from his original publication has gone to the Booksellers and not to him; he pleads poverty, "an abyss of misery", and seeks financial support to publish a further work, "The amiable Authoress of the Monody [Anna Seward] has furnished me with a Number of authentic anecdotes and…I have collated a number of secret American, and other state papers with some original letters from Washington…also a correct engraving of West Point…all completely and elegantly engraved, in a continuation of the work…I am encouraged to publish the above to aid my petition now before the House of Commons for compensating the loss of £60000 occasioned by my unhappy connection in this unfortunate business…" This refers to a famous incident during the American War of Independence. Major Andre was hanged as a spy on 2 October 1780. ALS commenting on a ms. has been sent "a very minute & apparently faithful & accurate narrative of all the occurrences which have taken place at Botany Bay…but I cannot think that the public in general would find much interest in a bare journal of transactions…" 2pp., n.p. or d. Barbauld, Mrs. Anna Laetitia (sister of John Aikin). ALS to "my dear Sarah", commenting on Southey's Kehama. 1 & l/2pp., n.p or d. (hinged). More, Hannah. Album of Important Autograph Letters. Folio, cont. half brown morocco gilt (lower cover soiled, upper joint cracked). Including: Darwin, Charles. ALS to Mr. Murray [John Murray, publisher]. Down, June 11th 1880. 2 & a half pp., concerning Mr. Charles of the City of London School asking permission to quote extracts "from my Naturalist's Voyage" in his Model Reading Book. He lists the three passages and "I should very much like to grant permission & feel proud that any passage in any book of mine be used for educational purposes; but I cannot of course grant permission without your consent, as the book is your property."(conjoined second leaf pasted down) Dodgson, Rev. Charles Lutwidge, 'Lewis Carroll'. ALS, 2 & a half pp. The Chestnuts, Guildford, Dec. 29/79. "My dear Edith, I wrote to that hardened malefactor, Agnes, on the 22nd., telling her 4 of us would come, and that she was to let you know how many tickets would be wanted. I find it difficult to describe, in ordinary English, the infamy of her conduct: so will not dwell on it - 3 of them are coming, so we shall be 7 in all: please get the seats you think best… and please send all the tickets to Mrs. Hull - then, if anything should prevent our coming, they could utilise the whole lot." He declines an invitation to tea, "…though tea might content our little friends, "this child" would need a more solid meal!" (conjoined second leaf pasted down) It is difficult to know which Edith Dodgson is addressing. Edith Liddell, sister of Alice died in 1876; Edith Blakemore, who he met whilst on annual holiday at Eastbourne in 1877 would have been only five in 1879. She also refers to the troubles with senior staff at the hospital regarding her Probationers. (tipped in) Millais, Sir John Everett. ALS to Mrs. Reiss, 2 Palace Gate, lst May 1877. 2pp + 2 lines. "I heard yesterday that you had bought "Victory, O Lord". I feel extremely flattered that you shd. possess it, and can assure you that I know it to be one of my best works…Some day I am pretty certain it will be worth double the sum paid for it." (conjoined second leaf pasted down) This work is now in the collection of the Corporation of Manchester. Bird, Isabella L. ALS to Mr. Murray, 33 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh, July 3rd. n.y. 2 and a half pp. "I am sorry to be obliged to write that it is impossible for me to complete the concluding chapter of Japan before I leave on the 18th…I hope you will allow me this…latitude. I have now decided on going to Switzerland by Harwich and Rotterdam in order to avoid Paris…I am so altogether broken down and useless that I shrink from seeing any of my friends till time has brought some little healing and the power of taking up the interests of life again." (conjoined second leaf pasted down) Unbeaten Tracks in Japan was published in 1880. Schliemann, Dr. Heinrich. ALS to Mr. Murray, Athens 3l Jany. 1880. One page. Concerning the publication of his work "…I perfectly approve of the type of your 2nd specimen page, but that, as I do not intend to publish a volume thick as the Bible, I must insist upon the pages being precisely of the size of the enclosed large 8vo and that the printed matter on the pages be exactly by one inch more in width and by one inch more in length than it is in Dennis' Etruria. GREAT WAR - A RABBIT SNARE MADE BY A ST. DUNSTAN'S WAR BLINDED SOLDIER with related card inscribed price ticket Blind Veterans UK, formerly St Dunstan's was founded by Arthur Pearson, who had himself lost his sight due to glaucoma, because of the increasing numbers of British soldiers returning from the front lines during the First World War suffering from blindness, Pearson established a hostel for these soldiers as well as blinded sailors and airmen. His intention was that, with training and assistance, they could go on to lead productive lives and would not have to depend on charity. The hostel's first location was in Bayswater Hill, London. Shortly after, the organisation moved to St. Dunstan's Lodge in Regent's Park, along with its first 16 members. The Committee's work was praised by the London press at the time - a reference to the Lodge appeared in The Illustrated London News in 1915, which said: 'in a corner of London's most beautiful park is a house where miracles are worked.' On Pearson's death in 1921, the Chairmanship fell to Ian Fraser, who had been placed in charge of the charity's after-care activities by Pearson, providing assistance and social events such as reunion meetings for the blinded veterans after they had left the hostel in Regent's Park. Fraser had served during the First World War in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and was blinded by a bullet on the Somme. Having become generally known by the name of the building in which it was based, the organisation then formally changed its name to St. Dunstan's in 1923. Fraser remained as Chairman until his death in 1974. During the Second World War, the charity admitted those who had lost their sight through their work in the auxiliary services, women's services and munitions factories, besides service personnel from Poland, Netherlands, United States, Canada and South Africa.[4] Due to concerns about potential air raids on Brighton during the Blitz, Blind Veterans UK evacuated its operation from Brighton to the town of Church Stretton, Shropshire, where it occupied the Longmynd Hotel and other buildings, setting up an industrial training centre and a hospital. By 1946, the year it returned to Brighton, the charity cared for over 2,000 blind ex-Service personnel.
